Oooh, this could be an interesting thread! I'd like to try to go organic, but the best I can do up here in the boonies is Safeway's "O" organic line...does that count?
Yup, I just did a search and the closest whole foods type of store is in Sebastopol :(
A great program to sign up for is home delivery of your veggies... a lot of farms have co-ops where you can sign up for their specific boxes of veggies/fruits/sometimes more groceries too and then get them once a week. Great if you're busy or want a challenge in what you're going to cook. I've discovered lots of food this way. :)
This is awesome, TSK! We try to get organic foods whenever we can too. I just wish they weren't so expensive.
Come cook for me?! heehee
Organic all the way!!!! Also, buy your hormone free dairy products and free range eggs and meat! :)
CHECK INGREDIENTS! things can be labeled organic even if they aren't 100%!
i love eating organic, because i eat WHATEVER i want... organic carrots and ranch (but made with organic yogurt, not sour cream) at midnight is my favorite. :)
i made turkey with onions and cilantro in my wok the other day. we stuffed bell peppers with it and YUM!!!!!!
I've been reading a lot of mentions of co-ops on here, so now y'all have got me curious about that and going organic too. So I did a little googling and came upon this cool locator site where you can punch in your location and find a co-op, grocery store, farmers market, farm, or an even an online store near you. It's pretty nifty.
Check it out:

A question for those of you who have gone organic and also buy non-hormone injected foods. Did you notice any changes personally after converting? Like any differences in your immune system, better skin, increased energy, etc...?
^ i did. like i said, i'm more regular with bathroom use... my uti's are not as frequent, and i feel healthier... i am not as tired as i used to be either.
I have fallen in love with organic milk! I will never ever go back!!
I also bought an organic turkey this year which was uber tasty.
I feel like i'm taking better care of my husband and I when i buy organic.
Its a bit pricier but much tastier IMO.
Eating a bunch of fast food is lousy for moods too. I wouldn't say I'm a moody person, but eating healthy always makes you feel calmer, in check, harmonious and all of that. Makes a lot of sense! Feeding yr body crap makes it want to yell and yell.
I'mm organic, and it makes me happier. I also am a part of a produce co-op, so i eat a lot af variety and it's very cheap!
I'm less moody, healthier, happier and I feel more in tune to my emotions and intuition.
Well, pesticides are cheap and allow for larger production. Organic farming does not always yield predictable, or aesthetically pleasing, results. Plus, it usually has to be produced relatively close to the selling site. Sucks, but it makes sense. It will only become cheaper as more people begin buying organic and the large corporations are forced to practice organic farming techniques.
OTOH, there are large companies like Horizon (I think that's their name--They sell milk in the red cartons) who can technically claim to be organic, but they only feed their cattle organic grain on muddy cramped feed lots. The cows pump themselves full of stress hormones and it defeats the whole purpose of buying organic in the first place.
ALways know your product and producer. Sometimes I opt for local over long-distance or mega-corporation organic.
Fast food is notoriously unhealthy.
For example much of the meat is 'mechanically recovered meat' or MRM. This is meat recovered from carcases by blasting with steam hoses, etc. It's then reprocessed to make it look like 'virgin' meat. Much of the sliced up ham, turkey, chicken, etc, in supermarkets comes from this source.
A lot of the fruit, etc, is not good either. It's larger than naturally grown fruit, and that's achieved by vigorous pruning of the plamts and heavy application of fertiliser. As the fruit is force grown it also has to be treated liberally with herbcide to prevent disease.
Pre-packed salads are not too clever - for example they're washed in chlorinated water to kill surface bacteria and packed in bags with a low oxygen and high CO2 content. Makes it lok good on the shelves, but the nutitional value is degraded.
(Try leaving an opened packet of this type of salad to stand for 24 hours and look how quickly it wilts. Fresh vegetables don't behave that way).
Supermarket bread is now made by the Chorley Bread Process (or CBP). Makes it cheaper to produce, but halves the nutritional value compared to traditional bread.
I could go on and on, but the moral of the story is stay away from much of the pre-packaged stuff in supermarkets. Ditto stay away from fast food outlets.
Phil.
Yes.
The reason why when you picture big angry red-faced dudes in Texas (sorry) going RAWR I want my BEEF is because of the adrenaline and fear a cow gets when faced with a stun gun. It surges through their bodies and muscles, and they die like that. So you are eating the cow's....adrenaline, hormones, fear, all of that. Beef is also addicting for that reason.
I'm all organic. Once you go organic, you never go back. You feel better and the food tastes like FOOD!
^yea. It's very hard to shop conventional these days, when you see rows and rows of perfectly red, identical tomatoes, and perfectly fat bright green pears........they pump them full of food coloring, other shit, and plump them up to be visually appealing to the consumer. Don't participate in them playing on your stupidity!
i love central market 2% milk. yummy. i have to buy it every week though because it goes bad.
