It really depends on your skin complexion. Yes, you are pale, but do you have certain colors as undertones? You mentioned you had read hair, thus you probably have some flush to your skin. I do not think that black hair would look good with it, but that is me.
On nice (aka not pasty like me!) pale skin, I think it's striking. Depending on the girl, I love that or rich brunette hair the best with pale girls. So no highlights or anything to texture the color? Are you planning to do it yourself or go to a salon?
ETA: She's right, it largely depends on your skin's undertones, esp if you're just going black black. Some skin tones need those warm highlights to blend in a little. Hmmm.
I always color my own hair unless I want highlights. My hair is naturally a medium brown, and I have freckles.
Without looking at you, I'd recommend a warm brown instead.
Get Redken Shades EQ. You can get it on ebay. It's the cadillac of demi-permanent colors, will make your hair shiny and should last you for at least 4 weeks. Personally, I'd get a level 3 and then work your way down to jet black, but even if you did go black it would eventually fade away. Since you've been coloring your own hair I'll leave it up to you to decide what undertones you need ie: neutral, golden etc. I have the link saved somewhere for their color chart...I'll see if I can find it for you.
I think I may end up as a warm brunette since I will be applying the black over my rich red hair.
You aren't doing it yourself, are you? That's a really drastic change... But yea, a brown with golden tones may serve you better than straight black. Even if it does match your skin tone, you'd probably end up looking goth... which isn't a bad thing, but it may affect your business in a way you wouldn't like or be used to.
do a strand test first somewhere hidden in the back of your hair, and wait it out a couple of days too to test for fading and different lighting situations. Better safe than sorry ya know?
When I used black hairdye, it was black til it grew out or I bleached it. If you are using level 3, it might be permanently black. If you're using any kind of temp dye it will fade.
Why not do some black low lights over the red? If you want to be more dramatic you can go all the way. Black is Hella hard to get out... so this is a pretty strong commitment.
Check out this chick's hair color progress if you would like to see some comparisons. Not too many face shots but can see the effects against her paler skin tones.

I bought a perm straight black color with a 20 developer.
I want something really dramatic as i've stuck with the same shades for close to a decade!
Please do NOT use the permanent black! At least go back to the store and pick up a semi or demi permanent black first before you go balls out with the permanent color...otherwise you could be stuck with black for longer than you care to.
eta I had black lowlights with a rich dark brown base before and I LOVED it!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE black hair or dark hair. I see it on ladies with light skin and light eyes and it rocks. I think they call them the "winters" in the skin hair tone group. Think Cleopatra. And of course a very young Liz Taylor, she rocked it!
A warm brunette would be great. I have pale skin and a medium chestnut brown hair that looks dark reddish brown in the club and I get a nice amount of good comments on it.
I love black hair with pale skin - look at all the Asians who rock that look. But it can't be just any black. There are a zillion shades and the difference between "exotic beauty" and "cheap washed-up goth" is all in the match between your shade and your skin tone. Go to a wig shop if you can and compare different shades with your skin, or if you have friends with black dogs or cats you can compare your skin against their fur. Make sure you get a shade out of the animal kingdom so it looks more natural.

That's a good idea, there are a couple of great wig shops in LA.
I'm a redhead too and getting my hair done tomorrow afternoon. I looked around online and did one of those virtual makeover things and I picked a shade called "burgundy black" and it looked really good. Maybe try a black wig with some burgundy or similar shades in it. Good luck!!
Burgundy black sounds hot! I'm hoping I end up with a color similar to that after I add the black in.
