There is a new scam going around...
Don't get caught in it!!
I just got a call this morning saying that someone was trying to collect unemployment under Joe's Social Security number. They asked to verify the SS#, address, and full name of the person they were calling about.
Sssssure. Let me get that info to you right now. They said they were calling from the Indiana Department of Labor. ::) So, I took their phone number and called them back from a blocked number line. It goes to an answering machine that says, "We're not available, but please leave your information after the tone and we'll get back to you as soon as we can." --Probably with a tube of lube and a big dildo.
Who's "we"? And why wasn't the phone answered as the "Indiana Department of Labor"?
And, one more thing...the Department of Labor does not handle unemployment stuff, Einstein.
But, just letting everyone know that people are now calling about someone using our Social Security number to collect unemployment...and wanting to "verify" that info over the phone.
Don't do it. Get the number they're calling from and let your local PD know. If you are really concerned and you have time (which you won't...they always say that they are calling from a different state than which you live) go to that states dept of unemployment security and verify that no one is actually doing that. You can also call the state's Dept. of Labor and verify that no one would be calling regarding this issue.
Just a heads up!!
Re: There is a new scam going around...
Wow, how scandalous! Did you call the police and make a report?
Re: There is a new scam going around...
Thank you so much! I hate shiz like that and I feel bad for the people that fall for it!
Re: There is a new scam going around...
Thanks for posting this! My parents are so gullible and always getting wrapped up in these things. I'll be sure to warn my mother about this! Thank you....:)
Re: There is a new scam going around...
I called the local PD and gave them the phone number that these morons are using...
Don't know what will happen afterwards...
But just DO NOT GIVE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER OUT TO ANYONE!!!
;)
Re: There is a new scam going around...
I am very protective of my phone number and SS# etc. I run any financial documents through a shredder before they go into the trash. No one but friends and family really need my phone number. And no one but me, a handful of companies that I do business with, and the SO need my SS#!! I hate how they ask you for it on almost every form.
Those callers were certainly ballsy... and depending on how you look at it... really stupid or really smart.
Re: There is a new scam going around...
Thanks for the heads up, VG!!
Re: There is a new scam going around...
thanks for the warning. These scams suck. We got calls from some asshat trying to verify our banking info not long ago. Then shortly after that emails arrived trying again to get at our bank accounts. It's enough to make a person want to screen every call that comes in
Re: There is a new scam going around...
I basically only give important information such as that to people who are officially working for that organisation. I make the phone call to the official number listed in the phone book. If someone calls me, I'm usually expecting their call.. so if it is a company or someone that I wasn't expecting a phone call from then my alarm bells ring big time.
It's good to know for us Aussies too as I betcha there is some scam running around in our own country along similar lines.
