Anyone do their own French manicures?
I got these strips that are supposed to be used to do French tip nails. I want to do something a little unique (like purple with white tips, or white with black tips or blue with purple tips) so I can't really see going to a salon all the time. I also just like doing my own nails.
The instructions say that you should apply the nail polish to the tips of the nails and THEN the base coat. This might work with the natural tones, but I'm afraid of getting the base color all over the tips. My hands shake a little and I'd be afraid to mess them up.
Any tips? Anyone ever try this?
Re: Anyone do their own French manicures?
Yeah, if you're going to do different colors besides the pink/white, do the base first. Also, if you're going to use the strips, you need to wait at least an hour or so to make sure your base coat is completely dry before putting them on, or the strips will mess up the polish.

I used to do my own french tips with the sticker strips. The first tip is to practice and be patient! Make sure to let to put two coats on the tips and let them dry completely. Use the same brand polish for the base color. Make sure to use a very thin coat for the base color. If you have a tinier brush that will fit into the polish bottle, that will help you apply the base coat more precisely.

I do my own french tips on my toenails. I do the white freehand without any strips, then paint over with 2 coats of sheer pink.

All good advice. Thanks girls!!
Re: Anyone do their own French manicures?
I'm picky about the white not being too white, if that makes any sense, so I do put the base over the tip. Also, I find it easier to freehand the tips than to use the stickers. It just takes a little practice and a Q-Tip dipped in nail polish remover.

Agreed.
Re: Anyone do their own French manicures?
I hate those strips. I freehand mine too, and they turn out better than the one time I paid someone else to do it.
Re: Anyone do their own French manicures?
i always do my own anls and have just two manicures a year maybe. Bourgois doa nice white tip polish which comes with an angled brush for getting tips just right. It juts takes practice and then you can do it with a regular brush.
Re: Anyone do their own French manicures?
The strips never work for me. If you let the polish dry completelly, it tears and cracks when you remove the strip. If you don't let it dry, it kind of strings and smears when you remove the strip. I suggest getting a large brush and doing it like they do in the salon with acetone, painting the tip first. If the tip color is on first it should make it fairly easy to put the base on, because the edge acts as a stop and prevents polish from getting on the tip.

That's cool you guys do yr own. Mine don't grow n I hate painting them every other day when they chip so I get 'em done.
I like weird n crazy nails too.....check out Fergie's on the cover of Blender last month.....
Re: Anyone do their own French manicures?
I like to free hand my French manicures as well. I've never had any luck with the strips.
Just practice, practice and you'll have it perfected in no time.
Speaking of which, I'm way overdue for a manicure... yikes!
Re: Anyone do their own French manicures?
I've done it before, but I don't use a base coat. If you mess up the tip, you can always take a qtip dipped in nail polish remover and fix it.
Re: Anyone do their own French manicures?
I use a stiff square paint brush, something you could easily find in the craft section of walmart, and freehand. I just paint the tips without regards to neatness, wait for it to dry, then dip the brush in nail polish remover and shape the white tip, wait for the remover to evaporate, then put the pink over it. It comes out lovely! Learned it from Youtube. lol
Re: Anyone do their own French manicures?
Maybe I'll try it tonight. My nails are pretty beat up (the base coat that is) and I'd like to give it a shot. It really sounds like the strips were a waste of 3 bucks!
Re: Anyone do their own French manicures?
Love the sticker strips! I like my tips odd colors (black, metallic blood red, and glittery hot pink are my fabes!) then the rest natural clear pink. I just got rid of my acrylics though, so I won't be having them for awhile. :(
