What ever happened to...
What ever happened to the days of just calling someone?
Why does it seem now everything is text or im? Why does it seem we always have to ask if its okay to call now?
Seriously whats the point in even having cell phones? No one ever answers their phone anyway.
Bah im just getting annoyed with the fact it seems like I always have to say 'hey can I call you? My thumb is sore from texting' or some stupid shit lol.

Re: What ever happened to...
I'm gulty. I never answer my phone. I am a terrible phone person. I hardly ever remember to return calls. I check my voicemail once a week or so, delete them and forget to return calls.
I have a phone aversion. I prefer email, and if people want to get ahold of me, email is the way to go cause I reply to that way faster than I return calls. It's not cool of me...but it's just how I am.

Re: What ever happened to...
i used to LOVE to talk on the phone. Like in high school it was part of my nightly ritual to talk to a few different people on the phone. Used to drive my family nuts.
NOW i suck at the phone. I don't like answering it and i never check my voicemail.

Re: What ever happened to...
I'm sort of the same as PhillyVixen; feel very comfortable on the phone in the right mood, but notice more and more that I'd rather be e-mailing or communicating another way. I think this has something to do with controlling time--technology now lets us choose more how we spend our time, and text or e-mail lets us have that control completely. I'm rarely on the phone these days, but make a point to call people if they are in need of a friend for any reason--that seems to go better with the human touch.
But I think you're on to something, Callyish. We are in the midst of a change in human communication, and the phone is being used less and less now for casual purposes. I wonder if there will be phones in fifty years.

Re: What ever happened to...
Phone calls cost more money than IMing? I like to call so I don't know.

Re: What ever happened to...
Yeah I kind of got to where I hate being on the phone with everybody except my mom. That includes my best friends and my Hubby. I just don't like being on the phone with them--it's like, I'd rather just see you. And most of the time I don't have much to say, hence texting. I really like the availability of texts - it's great if I just got back from seeing someone and I want to say "I had a great time" but don't want to call just to say that very short, simple message.
I dunno; it doesn't bother me that lots of people are typers not talkers, except that not everyone has unlimited texts so I don't like texting them and costing them moneys.

Re: What ever happened to...
I would love texting if I didn't end up with $100 in overages every month. Thus, I am with Cally on this one.

Re: What ever happened to...
I think the world of cell phones has burnt a lot of people out. When it's permanently attached to your hip, there's not a lot of pressure to use it 24/7.

Re: What ever happened to...
i never text or im. i'm WAY too talkative to type.
people try to text me, but my text is disabled (thanks to my daughter texting "aka playing with my phone" random people and racking up our bill! lol
it's faster to call someone and get out what you need to say. texting hurts my brain lol

Re: What ever happened to...
I don't have texting and it costs me $0.25/ text, so I try not to.

Re: What ever happened to...
Don't get me wrong... im queen of texting... like I send over 2000 a month lol.
I just get annoyed that it seems you have to ASK someone if you can call them now instead of just doing it.
I hate talking on the phone anyway, I like to just call, say what needs to be said and be done. Sometimes its just easier then texting..

Re: What ever happened to...
First, people stopped writing letters when email came along. Now, people text instead of talk. So what's next?

Re: What ever happened to...
I never ask before calling... am I supposed to?
-
Re: What ever happened to...
I text people more than calling now-a-days. I used to spend literally hours on the phone with friends, boyfriends, whoever would talk/listen. But now, it just seems so much easier to just text. I would die without text messaging.

We'll be reading brainwaves? That might turn out bad, cuz I know my brainwaves would reveal way WAY more than I want.

Re: What ever happened to...
i get sick of SMS - but now I just discovered I can sms from my computer through a usb connection I don't mind doing it! I can do that while I get my sw fix

Re: What ever happened to...
1. text makes the message short, and you can get to it when you want to.
2. some people don't like being forced to react to stuff in real time. text gives an opportunity to reise before commenting

 I'm the same exact way but it's so bad that I seriously wish for the days of house phones back w/no call ID sometime, I think it would do wonders for my personal mental health, but I guess I just can't be bothered to fix it on my own.
But good points Cally.

Re: What ever happened to...
I like texting, but my cell phone doesn't work at my house...we live in BFE and there's not a Verizon tower up here. Soooo, I get angry calls/texts from people wanting to know why I haven't responded. Because I haven't been in range, a-hole!!

Re: What ever happened to...
I usually just call if I want to call someone............and then just hang up if they don't answer (and try again later) or leave a voicemail or leave them a text message.
Me? Depends who it is calling and if I have to time/inclination to speak with them.
Guess it is my office admin. experience in my early 20s that helped me get over any phone phobia I had.. I've been told I have a great phone voice (when I want to put it on).

Re: What ever happened to...
You ask people if you can call them? I do too, but only because it seems like I have to ask to do something other than text.
Lately I have somebody that won't answer the phone but will text all day long. WTF? If you've already got the phone in your hand, press the fucking 'talk' button! You won't burst into flames, I swear.

Re: What ever happened to...
Guys seem to do it more than girls, at least in my experience. It annoys the shit out of me. Or why does somebody have a voice mail but it's FULL for weeks at a time? What's the point of having it? Just erase some messages.
Can ya tell I have a love/hate relationship with my phone and the people that live in it?

Re: What ever happened to...
I hate when someone texts me and when I try and call them they won't answer their phone. I understand if you are in class but wtf? Texting back and forth gets annoying to me. Just call me dagnabit.
