So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
this book has been out for a while, but i picked it up recently (couldn't pass since it was in the bargain bin for $4 at Barnes & Noble). Holy shit! I love love loved it. I actually read it in one day, and I dont think I was ever motivated to read a 200+ page book with no pictures in one day.
I was laughing out loud and dancing around the house singing about how much I loved the book. My boyfriend got a kick out of that.

I liked it too. Thanks again, Ginger!

I'm the only person in the entire world who hated it.

Hehehe.... I can see why she (and her style) might not be be everyone's cup of tea.
I liked it tho. :)

Re: So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
I liked the book. It was okay. I finished it in two hours. I read so fast it bugs me. I paid 14 dollars for it, but since I've already finished it, i'm going to return it to the bookstore. is that bad? i dont think so.
She tries too hard in her writing, describing things way too much. It's like when a singer overstylizes their voice... it's just too much. It almost seemed like she was talking down or something.. I dont know. I didn't like her writing style.
She's pretty successful though, she wrote Juno, and hte same actress who was in transformers (Megan Fox) is going to be in her movie called "Jennifer's body".
the book was okay. is there any truth to her theory that girls who wear WHITE shoes make more money than black and clear ones?? I thought that was kind of interesting.

Re: So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
Im not sure if I read it or not, I read a few books by strippers last year and dont remember one single name!
Ill have to ask GoldCoastGirl if it was one I leant to her or not, lol. If I havent read it I will.

Re: So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
Gypsy, I think returning it is not as bad as what i did. It is one of the books i read entirely in the store.
I forgot about the white shoe part. I read it when i was still wearing black. Funny, i swear by my white shoes now!

Re: So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
that's crazy, i was just going to bring her up today, she's the one that wrote "JUNO"...which u all probably already know, but i just learnt that today, weird.

Re: So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
I read this last week. It was interesting, mainly just because of the topic, not the way she wrote the book. I completely agree with Lysondra in that the use of similes was so annoying. Also, I never really connected with her character in the novel. She didn't seem 'real' as such and more as though she was doing an experiment.
Anyway, I must admit it is an interesting and very quick read. Hardly writing to rave about though, in my opinion.
And Gypsy I was wondering about that white shoe thing as well.

Re: So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
Ah, none of the things anyone has said rings a bell so i dont think Ive read this one. Ill look out for it.
About white shoes though - sometimes on slow nights I break out a white outfit and Ive always felt that the white shoes make a ton of difference, I cant stand to wear them on regular nights though!

+1 here. I couldn't read past a few pages.

Re: So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
I read it and really liked it-loved the movie Juno too.
-
Re: So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
I probably wouldn't mind her movies - since I don't have to read her damn nauseated writing style. :ill:
-
Re: So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
Her style is excessively stylish but I thought that was cute, I didn't mind.
I used to BANK in my white shoes. Unfortunately I wore them out and I don't have any other outfits that go with white shoes since those outfits were all stolen. When I read that part I made a mental note to get white shoes again and some other outfits but then I forgot.

Re: So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
I very much disliked her writing style, but in the end I guess I agreed with her. As much as dislike her style, I've gotta give her credit for her use of it.
Lysondra, the movie is just as annoying, but a little sweeter.

Re: So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
I've never heard that about white shoes, but it's funny considering I've never owned a pair.:)

Re: So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
Disclosure: Diablo is a friend of a friend of mine. Not a real direct line, but enough to affect my judgement, since I really really love my friends.
I loved it. I know people objected to the "Unlikely Stripper" thing, but having dealt with several literary agents and publishers myself, I have to wonder if that was her first choice. But even if it was it doesn't torture me enough for me to not love the book.
My favorite scene was when she was auctioning off her panties. It really brought back the feeling of handling so much cash that you can't imagine how much it is (even if in reality it's not that much money), and just wallowing in it.
It also didn't bother me that she wasn't a top earner. Most strippers aren't. It's not a how-to-make-big-money handbook, so that doesn't affect my opinion of her authority to write about stripping.
If she only worked for ten months, it still beats the shit out of people who think they know everything about strippers because they worked for a week or who had a stripper roommate or ex-girlfriend.

Re: So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
Agree with most of you..I didn't like how she was making herself out to be such an original, smart, alterna-stripper.. I remember in one part she said something like she did high ninja kicks on stage when the other girls would move around slowly like bloated eels onstage.. WOW!!! SO DIFFERENT!!!

Re: So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
Her book was so-so in my mind and i find her annoying and condescending
-
Re: So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
Aww, I thought the book was adorable in a dorky, self-concious, precious kinda way. As a dorky, self-concious stripper myself, I relate.
Anyone who thinks she's condescending should check out the many threads on this forum dedicated to the hilarious and grotesque things we've seen other dancers say and do and wear. Let's face it, every stripper is not BritneyIreland. Some of the girls you meet in the club downright make you wonder about the future of mankind, and she captures that, as well as writing about the successful SuperStrippers she encounters at the bigger clubs.

Re: So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
i dont buy the white shoe thing. because most of the time if a girl is wearing them they are all scuffed up/ dirty. the very reason i would never own a pair.
i havent read the book.

Re: So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
I read her book when it came out. I am familiar with some of the clubs she worked in.

Re: So who read Diablo Codys "Candy Girl"?
I thought the book was entertaining, which is what I expect out of anything I read. :)
