To micro or not to micro..that is my question!
I have been loving the new Ziploc steamer bags...wash the veggies, throw em in the bag with some lemon or garlic, microwave...voila, fast, easy nutrition...or is it? Watching a show on food network, I heard microwaving rids broccoli of 75-85% of it's nutrients. Please tell me this isn't so! Maybe that stat was prior to these fabulous bags that trap in the goodness..maybe? Good news or bad, input is appreciated. Thanks ladies!
Re: To micro or not to micro..that is my question!
microwaving kills food and people. don't use them.. bad. Sacrificing nutrition for convenience is not good, just use a steamer or eat them raw.
Re: To micro or not to micro..that is my question!
Does cooking veg in general not decrease its nutritional value? Does a microwave decrease it more?
Re: To micro or not to micro..that is my question!
^^^Cooking decreases the nutritional value of all food, microwaves are worse.
Microwaves are bad and those bags youre using - are they plastic? if so theyre quite probably leeking chemicals into your food too.
Re: To micro or not to micro..that is my question!
microwaves are bad news.
once I read about this grade school science project where a kid took water that had been microwaved and water that hadn't been microwaved (and brought back down to the same temp so that wasn't a variable) and then watered the same type of plants with it.
the plant that had been watered with the microwaved water looked like crap.
chuck out your microwave-- you've find it's really not a big deal and the foods that absolutely need a micowave tend to be really crappy anyways (and I have put a lean cuisine in the oven-- I'm just saying there are tastier and healthier alternatives to lean cuisines)
plus what about the rays that may be coming OUT of the micowave while you're standing nearby? Dear Lord-- make yourself a tinfoil helmet (and crotch guard for the boys) if you love your microwave.
Re: To micro or not to micro..that is my question!
Does anyone have any studies showing just how bad using a microwave really is?
I believe it is bad, but isn't it weird that you rarely hear about studies that talk about the risks, yet we're constantly bombarded with new microwave products and foods. I was having this conversation with a friend the other day, and I've heard about the water after being boiled in a microwave killing the plant, and even that microwaves change the composition and kill the nutrients.
I think I'll have to google into this a little later and report back.
Re: To micro or not to micro..that is my question!
Threads like this give me anxiety cause I use microwaves for a bunch of shit. (Like the veggies you are talking about) or to heat something up really quick.
Damnit.
Re: To micro or not to micro..that is my question!
The way they heat food is to superheat small areas, which causes many nutritional changes to foods.
Dads a diabetic and he can have 1/2 a baked potato from the oven, but can't have one thats been micro'ed. His doc says the carbs are broken down by it, in escense upping the simple carbs or sugar content.
This really freaked me out and I've almost stopped using mine.
Re: To micro or not to micro..that is my question!
I think Ive posted the links on here before but they should be easy to find on google if they dont come up with a search. Im on an awkward computer currently which doesnt copy and paste otherwise id do the search and post again.

Oh wow. I need to stop micro'ing my taters! I had no idea.
Re: To micro or not to micro..that is my question!
a couple links explaining:
edit: the second link recommends Turbo Ovens as an alternative. I googled them and they run about $70 at target and amazon, and cook in 1/3 less the time than a conventional oven--so they're only slightly longer cookers than microwaves.
I personally stopped using a microwave a year ago but occasionally use one at the cafe for croissants and whatnot.
I really need to gear down and try to get all microwaves out of my life.
Re: To micro or not to micro..that is my question!
I saw that experiment with the microwave water and plants also. I only use mine if I have no other choice. I'm not going to eat raw veggies (just ugh) but I will take the time to heat them on the stove.
