late 80s-mid 90s 'modern rock'
I've been compiling a folder of stuff I used to hear on the local 'alternative' station (106.3 for those of you in Jerz) and I need more! No grunge, no obviousness (I have the Cure, Midnight Oil, Sundays and stuff). I need the stuff by bands whose names I have forgotten. ;D
So far it's Cracker, Material Issue, Dramarama, Afghan Whigs, James. That sorta thing. Any ideas? Songs that make you think of that period? I know I've missed a lot.

Why don't you go look up some 120 Minutes playlists? Betcha that would be amusing. During that period I was listening to Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Babes in Toyland; screamy stuff.

Gin Blossoms
The Refreshments

Babes in Toyland were my total #1 fav.
So, I have no idea of what band names you've forgotten, nor do I know what was big in NJ at the time, but some more:
Pixies/Breeders
Matthew Sweet
Pulp
Blur
Buffalo Tom
uh, I guess Jane's Addiction is obvious
Porno for Pyros...
Re: late 80s-mid 90s 'modern rock'
The Replacements (plus Paul Westerberg's 14 Songs, an overlooked classic)
Semisonic (great one hit wonder- "Closing Time". A Twin Cities band.)
Husker Du (Plus Bob Mould's Sugar and solo stuff)
Soul Asylum
The Usual Suspects out of Seattle (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Mother Love Bone, Alice In Chains)
The Melvins
I have a super-cool Sire Records compilation from 1987...Lots of weird stuff on it. Aztec Camera, Erasure, Throwing Muses, Figures On A Beach
INXS, The Clash......
Re: late 80s-mid 90s 'modern rock'
The Breeders
Toad The Wet Sprocket
Second Coming (Godsmack before their time...)
Brother Cane
Soul Coughing

I'm not sure if this will fit within your timeline, but I thought of VAST. The first album Visual Audio Sensory Theater came out in 1998, but is one of my all-time favorites. VAST never got as much play as they (he, really) should have.

This is great stuff! I forgot about a lot of those bands. Figures on a Beach-one of those guys was the dj at a (regular dance) club I used to frequent! We teased him about it-brought up used copies of the cd for him to sign and stuff. ;D Not sure I've ever heard VAST.
