More uses for coconut oil
So I have a big tub of coconut oil that I had purchased for my hair. I though, there has to be more ways to use all this! So, I shaved with it...and WOW! My legs are the smoothest I can remember in a long time. Combined with a Ma bar lush bath and SHABANG, I've got the baddest baldest legs in town!

Re: More uses for coconut oil
Hmmm, I never tried shaving with it. I will now!

Re: More uses for coconut oil
Won't you smell like coconuts?
-
Re: More uses for coconut oil
Nope. The smell is very very faint even inside the jar of it.

Re: More uses for coconut oil
Oh ok. Its something I want to try but didn't want to smell like a pina colada after.

Re: More uses for coconut oil
That's what it's marketed as on my bottle. I got it from GNC and there are doses on there. I can't look now but I'll check later. You can also get capsules.

Re: More uses for coconut oil
i don't have the american shops here. where do you get it? i'm thinking health food shop? but maybe it could be pharmacy?
-
Re: More uses for coconut oil
I got it at GNC. I'm not really sure where else to find it. I had a really hard time. You can probably order it online. There is another thred in body business about where you can purchase via the webz

Re: More uses for coconut oil
^ I get mine at wholefoods when I don't order it online at tropicaltraditions.com (very good company and if you join their email system they send you all their specials. the best deal I ever got was 2 for 1 with free shipping.) I also prefer glass jars-- plastic held coconut oil no matter what the brand tastes funny to me.
also-- the stuff is excellent for stir fries and toast or grilled cheese sandwiches. I like it a lot and find it better than other oils but it also has a high saturated fat content (I think.) the health benefits for me outweigh that but make your own decision.
as far as other stuff to do with it, I brush my teeth with it. I dip my brush in the oil or scoop it up when it's semi-solid and then dip it in a small bowl of non-aluminum baking soda.
I noticed a difference in whitening my teeth (you can oil pull with coconut oil and a lot of people report whitening with it) and at my last dentist appointment my pockets weren't as deep (last time I had a bunch of 4's and 3's and maybe 3 months later on I only had one or two 4's and then a bunch of 3's.)
I also use it only my face, and honestly-- you know those nights where you shower after work and you just feel like there were so many germs you're afraid you're still going to break out/get sick/catch something? Those are the nights I slather on the coconut oil after the shower after work ALLL over. This is because it is an anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-viral substance. Less butt zits definitely although I need to figure out a way to put it on my back. I can only reach my shoulders and my midback but not really tween my shoulderblades easily. If you need a more powerful bug killer for zits or what not, break open a capsule of oregano oil and add it to a palm full of coconut oil and then spread it all over.
oh, I slathered it on after my shower last night but BEFORE work and my vip custy was like "WHY do you smell SOOO good???" I told him it was the power of the coconut. it doesn't smell like coconut fragrance but it still has like an unidentifiable but pleasing aroma. it's really mellow and mild.
warning: some use it as a deodorant but it makes me pretty rank. the last couple of times I went to work (not last night tho) I accidentally applied it to my armpits before my deodorant and I was SO rank I could not figure it out, until I remembered that I'd added coconut oil before hand. last night I didn't do that and I was fine.

These are probably stupid questions, but is the baking soda necessary and what are the "pockets" that you speak of?
Coconut oil has helped me out so good so far on everything else! My teeth need help desperately.

Re: More uses for coconut oil
I heard about brushing my teeth that way on curezone.com
flouride is very harmful to your teeth and your enamel. also, commercial toothpastes leave a thick coating on your teeth because of glycerine that prevents your enamel from reforming. it takes like 30 something rinses to get the coating off, whereas if you brush with soap (I've done that and you'd be surprised by how it helped my morning breath go away after awhile) and I assume oil, it takes only a few rinses. I'll try to find a curezone post because honestly I'm lazy to dredge up the details.
^
also,
just understand that toothpaste=the debbil.
anyways, regarding the baking soda... there's a couple reasons why it COULD work. I didn't do the coconut oil/baking soda toothbrushing thing because I thought it would strip my enamel. Quite the opposite. Here is someone's post on baking soda:
^he uses regular baking soda, but I prefer aluminum free because aluminum is one of the few chemicals that can cross the blood brain barrier and there's questions about aluminum and Alzheimer's and other long term effects.
as far as "pockets," IF you go to a dentist twice a year you should be having your pockets measured from about age 18 onwards.
here's some info:
when I first had mine measured I had a few ones, mostly twos, and a few threes. fast forward past a few measurements, skip a year of cleaning and not paying much attention to diligent self dental care (flossing only occasionally, brushing my teeth once or twice a day for maybe a minute only) and I had a bunch of fours, threes, and a few twos.
then after switching from brushing my teeth with soap (which really did work to remove plaque bumps on the back of my teeth VERY quickly but I wasn't brushing my teeth long enough with soap. I do brush longer with VCO and baking soda) to VCO and BS, and waiting 3 months (flossing only occasionally) I only had maybe 2-3 pockets measuring 4, bunches of three, and some 2's (but the time before I think I had maybe 7-8 pockets measuring 4).
my teeth also whitened up considerably although this was also because I wasn't drinking iced tea NEARLY as much. but the VCO and BS definitely contributed.

Re: More uses for coconut oil
p.s. FLOSS!!!! you have no idea how much floss is necessary. floss once a day.
I find that if I get those little plastic picks that I can floss with one hand, I floss more often. hell I can floss when I drive!
edit: wanna hear something gross? I read a magazine article about a study done on couples and cavities. the study found a direct correlation between cavities and being able to pass on the germs from the teeth rot between people to cause cavities.
you could get more cavities by kissing someone who has a lot of cavities.

Re: More uses for coconut oil
Whoa! Thank you for your very informative posts! I am definitely going to start using coconut oil for my teeth.

Re: More uses for coconut oil
^ yeah, something to do with the germs in the rotten tooth being passed along by saliva.

Re: More uses for coconut oil
Thought I'd add
for work if you want a consistent "wet hair look" rinse rinse rinse, but don't wash after letting it set.
E says it looks great, I hate the way it looks...looks oily and undone to me. Wore it like that one day to work b'c I was outta time, and I made good money. So, if you wanna try...go for it.

Since SW, I switched form moisturizing my face with cocnut oil to castor oil. I THINK i prefer the castor oil but they're both great.

:O I have pretty good dental health. or so I thought, I've been to about 4 different dentists in my adult life, maybe 5, (I've moved a lot) and they've never discussed "pockets" with me, or measured anything.
After looking at the link though, I'm grossed out. Does it hurt when they check them?
My next appt is an a month or two, I'll ask about this.
I just bought a bunch of coconut oil and may also take your advice on the brushing of the teeth with it .....I am in love with this stuff!

Re: More uses for coconut oil
really? Anti-viral, for blemish-prone skin?! At this time of year I have bad outbreaks on my chest and back- even though I eat really clean, drink a ton of water, exercise, am really clean and concious about using non-comedogenic products w/ anti blemish stuff.
Does this work?
(I just googled and found that coconut oil, out of other oils, has one of the highest probabilities of clogging pores...)
