Computer crash please help!
So my desktop crashed. I was online tried to open an attachment from another forum and got a bunch of popups. The computer completely locked up so I held down the power button to shut it off. When I turned it back on I started windows normally and it just stayed on the page where it's loading windows, couldn't get past it. Tried starting it at last know configuration, same thing. Tried starting in safe mode and it went to a black screen with scrolling white writing trying to load everything, got about 10 lines down and locked up. I tried each way a few times and it always does the same thing.
I think I remember an older computer doing something similar and it was either the harddrive or motherboard. How can I fix this? Try replaceing the hard drive? It's out of warrenty and I really would like to fix it myself and not have to bring it in somewhere. Also it's a custom built computer so not any one brand, oh and it's windows XP.
HELP!!! :computer:
Re: Computer crash please help!
If you opened an attachment and it immediately started opening pop-ups uncontrollably, you got ahold of some nasty spyware/malware/virus, and your computer is now infected.
If you use a good antivirus, you should have a start-up disk that you can use to boot the computer and run a virus scan.
If you don't have a start-up disk, try using safe-mode and start it up line-by-line, but you need to know what is starting up. Bypass (do no start) the line where it was hanging up on boot.
If you infected your pc with a rootkit, you may be fucked. The only thing to do then is re-partition your drive and reinstall Windows. You will lose all your data and you'll have to reinstall all your software. If you do this, your first order of business is to connect to the internet and install all windows critical and security updates. Second order of business is install an anti-virus program and update it. Also install Windows Defender and a good pop-up stopper.
Sorry I couldn't paint a brighter picture for you......

Thanks, I_luv_dancers. That sounds pretty complicated, looks like I will have to bring it in. I'm just worried that on the off chance my hard drive isn't wiped out they will be able to look at all my pictures.... There is nothing too bad on there but some of my modeling shots are nudes and well I don't want to deal with "the look" when I pick up the comp.
Cam yeah, I finally got a new laptop to replace the one I broke like a year ago. I can break ANY computer, over heat, it, make the fan stop working, crash it when not online. Once I even touched a brand new monitor to tell my dad to click on something and as soon as my finger touched it the screen went black and wouldn't come back on. Guess you could say I have the magic touch!!! Anyway, on the upside, now that I have another laptop I'll bring it to KW so we will have internet!
