Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
So I bought a new laptop. It's packin' 160Gigs on the dual core hard drive, 2gigs of RAM, a few other nice things, but two downfalls. One is it runs Vista (which sucks. The rumors are true). The other is it's bottlenecked in regards to the graphics card. I figured a decent laptop like this would have decent graphics card. HA! It's got an integrated Intel chipset. Well, I found this out when I tried to install Sims 2 Deluxe on it. My computer has 358MB of shared memory. It crashes lyke WHOA when you attempt to create a family.
Oddly enough, it installed on Boyfriends lappy fine. It's a two year old Dell which hs a slightly older integrated Intel chipset.
*grumble grumble*

Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
There SHOULD be a patch for that on Intel's site.
Run the game in XP compatibility too.
But I am almost POSITIVE I remember reading about an Intel Driver for the 9xx series integrated chipset that fixes directdraw issues in similar games that's for vista machines.
Just my 2 pennies.

Thats what I do on my crappy Vista garbage. I hate Vista...
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
I had it running in compatibility (Win XP) and it still crashed. HOWEVER, I did not know the existence of a patch. I did get the latest driver updates but I will have to look for that patch.
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
Let me know. My little sis had the same issue with her Vista installation.
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
No good. Stops responding right after creating a family.
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
What's the Graphics Adapter item in devicemanager?
(I think I remember your bf being a fellow tech so I wont bore you with the step by step since...well...he can do it :D )
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
Actually, Boyfriend is no tech nerd, nor am I, but I'm not entirely ignorant of the subject.
Would you be looking for the Display adapter? (I see nothing else even close to Graphics Adapter.) It is the Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family.
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
That's exactly it! Had my OS's confused. One sec.
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
Do this for me and tell me if it works, right click on the sims icon then left click on "run as administrator"
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
And you got the patch for your version of sim2 and expansion pack from ea right?

Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
Damn, that's weird. A LOT of people are experiencing the exact same issue but it's resolved by the patch. Windows Home Premium?
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
Home premium 32 bit without SP1.
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
No error or nothing, just freezes?
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
Oh, and I have DirectX up to date as well, updated at DirectX 10.
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
Yep. It comes up to the blue loading screen, which freezes, visibly, at the third 'bar' at the top. The audio continues on s normal for while then starts another music sequence over top of it. Horrible sounding.
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
What happens if you don't have your cd in the drive? (FYI, Your video card IS supported, just not recommended)
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
Asks for it. I've considered mounting the image to a fake drive via DaemonTools but I haven't found an image yet.
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
You can make one using Nero and what not. But does it ask for a CD in the same place?
Intel's website says the 965 chipset supports all Sims2.
EA says only Intel EXTREME chipsets do. But it's old info. :/
http://m0014.gamecopyworld.com/games...0Serial%20Info
go here and click on:
The Sims 2 v1.0 [ALL] No-CD/Fixed EXE #1 (if you have the CD version) and follow the instructions see how that works.
I really wish I could get somewhere :(
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
It does ask for the CD right before launching any portion of the Sims 2 game, including a, like, launch center which will launch all expansions and whatnot from the same screen.
I take Intel's advice with a grain of salt. EA's not trying to sell Intel chipsets.
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
well, intel's chipset became a mobile standard viiv after the documentation of supported hardware I have From EA. I have the same chipset, If we can't figure this out I'll get the game and figure this out
Re: Rant: Sims 2 and New Computer
Well, I tried. I mounted the mini-image in the link you supplied, tried it, failed, restarted, tried again, and still hit the same wall. I was so hopeful too, because the game until that point ran silky smooth. I heard a rumor about the game becoming confused over the dual core processor and attempted to set it's affinity to only one drive, but apparently as computer admin I'm not God enough to set that affinity.
I still suspect Vista. I honestly wonder if SP1 will help. Though I keep reading about people saying not to download it.

Just out of curiosity, this is the driver you used right? "the media accelerater driver"?
THE link above specifically supports these games:

just being sure.
