Re: I wanna be a paper girl!
I don't think its silly. Sounds like a great idea to make extra cash doing something you do anyways. Now I kinda want to get a route to force myself to wake up and exercise in the morning. The only consideration is, will you be out alone at 4-5 am? How safe is it?
Re: I wanna be a paper girl!
The paper delivery people around here all drive. It's funny to see them, because they are always tiny little crappy cars and the backseat is so full of papers that they are stacked higher than the windows!
Re: I wanna be a paper girl!
My very first job was a paper route. I didn't have a car so I had to carry a bunch all at once, it was such a pain in the ass and only payed like 5 cents a paper. I guess it could be better with a vehicle, lol
Oh I forgot to add, I found the job in the paper that I delivered, so that might be a good place to start looking.

If I can get one in my neighborhood, it'll be safe. Plus, I'll buy some mace to carry with me just in case.

What I thought I could do is make a run of the route in my car and drop off the papers, enough on each corner to deliver to that street, then park my car at the begining, walk a loop around picking up the papers at each corner and dropping them off, ending at my car again. Everything is laid out in blocks here, so I should be able to do a loop like that, and I'll be able to do it walking without having to carry heavy papers around with me.
I ran out and bought a paper, but they dont have a list of routes available, so I guess I'll have to call and ask. I dont know Vegas very well..only around my house, and I ony would do it if they had somethign available around here.
Re: I wanna be a paper girl!
K,
its a good idea, gets you out as you mention, etc....
though from the op I thought you were going to start a dog-walking service..
Re: I wanna be a paper girl!
You will be in the best shape of your life! I think thats a great idea but I agree about being safe. I don't think mace is enough, I think you should always take Dash with you. Never know who could be watching you and waiting for the perfect opportunity.
Besides, I pepper-sprayed one of my friends once to see if it worked and it didn't do shit. (He was cool about it, he did it to show me that even though pepper spray might be a deterrent its nowhere near enough to defend you from a real attacker.)
Be safe.
Re: I wanna be a paper girl!
Oooh! Sexy paper girl! Will you ride a bicycle with your hair in pigtails? *rawr!* You can throw MY paper anyday!
Re: I wanna be a paper girl!
If you like getting up super and early and stuff, go for it! My dad had a paper route for a long time both when he was little and in college and he didn't like it though.
Re: I wanna be a paper girl!
I was a paperboy from the age of eight till I left highschool. The last couple of years it was by car...a motor route. It kept me in pocket money the whole time.
Re: I wanna be a paper girl!
I personally think it is a great idea. I would do it today if I needed extra money...pretty easy way to make cash.
My first job was a paper route when I was in junior high...no car then...had to use the bicycle...which really sucked in Wisconsin...in January...hehehe
Re: I wanna be a paper girl!
They do it by car nowadays so they can give bigger routes (and hire fewer delivery people). My uncle had a paper route when he was in his late twenties and he did pretty well at it, but it wasn't just a stroll with the dog. He had to go get the papers at three in the morning every day and spend several hours driving slowly around a bad neighborhood in the dark. I've thought about doing it but never have.
Re: I wanna be a paper girl!
When I started, at the age of eight, there was no route in my little local neighbourhood, and my mother was only willing to let me do delivery on Saturday mornings.
The manager of the daily/Saturday morning paper came to my house and spoke with my mom and I. He said there were no customers in the area, but if I went door to door and got some, he would arrange to have a bundle of papers delivered to my corner and I could deliver to my customers and then sell the rest door to door.
I started with one customer who I got from canvassing, picked up customers as I went along who had bought a paper from me and asked me to continue to deliver from then on. Eventually I had over 50 customers, and at 9 my mom agreed to let me do it daily (early in the morning). So i repeated the process and built a huge paper route.
If there is nothing much available in your immediate gated community, perhaps you could manufacture something. It would be a good way to meet a lot of your neighbours too. :)
Re: I wanna be a paper girl!
Let me know how it goes, I'm poor too lol!!

Im sorry but i had to laugh when I read this, have you seen that little dog? lol, he's cute but I wouldn't think he'd be a good protection tool, lol.
I tried doing a paper route in college, they make you go with someone the first few times to see if you like it. Im sure it's different everywhere, but the routes were HUGE and I couldn't stand it, I got car sick making all the twists n turns and stops n gos. Sounds like a good idea for you if you can get a small nearby route. One thing that turned me off tho was that you have to bill and go collect the money too, and if they dont pay it looks bad on you and you dont get paid.
Re: I wanna be a paper girl!
lol, yeah, Dash wouldn't do much to protect me. Aside from weighing in at 11 lbs now...he's way way friendly to all strangers. He thinks every man, woman, child and dog on earth exists solely to be his friend.::)
A dog walking service....That's another good idea, actually. If I cant find a paper route. I see dog walkers advertise they charge about $15 for a 15 minute walk. I usually walk for an hour a day. I could put up a sign in my neighborhood to advertise, lots of people have dogs around here.
And you know their idea of a dog walk? Put the dog in a stroller and push it.::) It's the most rediculous thing I have ever seen.
Or maybe... could deliver ads. Like pizza ads. You know someone always hangs those on your door. I wonder how to find a job doing that.
hmm..I guess there are a few options I could look into. Iwonder if I could just go into a few pizza places and offer to drop off their menus to my neighborhood. Then I could do it on my own time and not have to be out in the early morning, I could deliver them in the late afternoon.
thanks for the ideas!

OMG that is bizarre.

Re: I wanna be a paper girl!
I hated my paper route... Had people take papers, had people lie that they didn't get their papers... I hated getting up early, argg...
Money was nice though, as was not having a boss. Two important things when I was younger.
Re: I wanna be a paper girl!
LOL!! Nothing like some good ol' exercise!
Re: I wanna be a paper girl!
I was going to suggest pamphlet deliveries if you can;t find a good paper route. I dont think you make much though... I've seen them advertised in local papers all the time - for what ever it's worth considering I'm in another country!!
