Cheap stripper phone option!
Yahoo offers a service connected with Yahoo Messenger that would allow you to get a phone number that would ring into your computer, for $2.49/month. That's cheap enough!
You could use this for your stripper phone and it would be safer than giving out any real number, and cheaper than a cell phone. The number would really only be traceable to your anonymous yahoo email, which you could create especially for stripper purposes. Yahoo keeps your billing info private so the public would only see whatever stripper info you choose to display with the profile.
All you need is sound and a mic on your computer (most seem to have it installed from the factory these days), and the latest version of Yahoo Messenger installed. Then go here to sign up for their phone service. You can just pay the cheapie fee to get a number that people can call into, but you can't call out from, or you can pay a little more and get the service that also allows you to make calls from your computer.
If people call the number when you're offline or have yahoo turned off, the call would go to a voicemail and you'd receive the message in your email. If people call while you're signed on, the "phone" will ring and you can choose to answer it or send it to voicemail.
The "phone in" service allows you to choose from many area codes like Vonage does.
The "phone out" service which allows you to make calls only costs 1 cent per minute, so $10 would give you 1000 minutes.
I have used yahoo to make calls and it works well. This would be especially good for girls who travel and take their laptops on the road - you could use it to make and receive calls where ever you can get internet.
Check it out!
Re: Cheap stripper phone option!
This is totally cool. It also sounds cheaper than doing Skype, which I use now. It's so much safer to do this for stripper phone purposes. I had an ex-regular of mine find out my real name and address because he used my cell phone number to get my info. It's pretty easy to do nowadays.
So ladies be careful, it can be pretty scary.
Re: Cheap stripper phone option!
www.privatephone.com offers a free number that's voicemail only, but it rings through when you call it, so guys THINK it's ringing on your end LOL. And you get to pick your area code, so if you want an out of town number...8)
Re: Cheap stripper phone option!
^^ I thought private phone wasnt free anymore
Re: Cheap stripper phone option!
PrivatePhone service ended on Feb 28, according to their website. And you can't answer a voicemail-only number to, for example talk to the custy to schedule an appointment. You also can't use it to make calls. As far as anyone else would know, your yahoo phone number would be a regular phone like any other.
The yahoo thing can be used for voicemail, answering and making calls, depending on what you want. And you get to choose from many area codes. I have looked for other totally free phone number deals and none seem to exist. And I think we can all afford $2.49/month with 1 cent per minute ;D

Re: Cheap stripper phone option!
Whats the point of being part of a service you can only listen to voice mail at? You couldn't even call them back unless you used a real phone...
Bridgette thats really cool.
Does anyone know if the ITouch have a microphone? If it did, couldn't you use the Yahoo phone service from there?
EDIT: nevermind there isn't a mic on it...

This is why I like the yahoo thing - you can receive AND make calls on it using the same phone number, so custies will never be the wiser and you don't have to worry about some weirdo getting your real name and address from your phone number!
There's really no point of using a voicemail number if you're still going to have to call them back from your regular phone. If they have their phones set to not accept blocked calls, you'll have to give them your number if you need to call them back.
Boy wouldn't it be cool if you could use the iTouch for this! ha
Re: Cheap stripper phone option!
Is this a viable substitute for a house phone? I know my roommate would like to ditch our house line, but I have a prepaid cell, and I don't really plan on signing a contract with anyone and we both sometimes have long phone conversations.
Re: Cheap stripper phone option!
I'm going to look into this . I pay SO much for phones.
