Reccomend a good Sake brand
So my birthday celebration is going to be Saturday, I'm getting friends together to eat sushi at a favorite place, but it's BYOB.
I want to bring some sake, but I'm not too sure on what would taste good or what is usually even available in liquor stores!
Anybody drink sake, or in general have some recommendations? :D
Alternatively, plum wine suggestions also welcome!
Re: Reccomend a good Sake brand
I like Plum Genki (I mangled the spelling) it comes in a pretty purple bottle and tastes like grape soda.

Re: Reccomend a good Sake brand
I LOVE hot sake..oddly though I've never thought of buying it to drink at home. I just get it on the rare occasions I go to a Japanese restaurant. I dont like it chilled and wouldnt know how to heat it without ruining it...any ideas?
Re: Reccomend a good Sake brand
I'm a fan of coarse filtered sake and higher quality, cold sake in general... For coarse filtered, try Momokawa Pearl (widely availible) and Hatkutsuru "Sayuri".
Regardless of brand, I'm always pleased when I get junmai ginjo (premium) or junmai daiginjo (super premium) sake. Look for it on the label and remember that they are best served chilled!
Happy Birthday!

Thanks mia! I wrote those names down, I'm crossing my fingers that they'll have one of them at the very least around me!
Cameron, I had hot sake once, it was pretty good, though I havn't a clue how to do it at home. Maybe simmer some water, then set the sake bottle in that for a little bit?
I have images of trying to heat it up on a little tart burner haha, though, but man that'd go so wrong...
Hmn, having trouble finding Plum genki, but I bet if I see it in the store it'll be recognizable by the sounds of it. :D

Gekkeikan is good, especially the black and gold. Nigori is good too, especially the Nigori Snow.
