I have something to say about veterans coming back
And I hope I don't get bashed for this, I shouldn't, here goes...
I was thinking about this earlier and decided that I will post this. I have noticed a few of the veterans coming back. What I think is, is everyone positive that these veterans coming back are the same person. You know the psychos lurking on this site see the veteran members leave and then come back. They could very easily create a fake account and pose as that veteran member :-\ Then they could join the gift exchange and get addresses of girls.
I know this isn't very likely because even if it was a psycho posing, the veterans are probably still lurking around and would notice. Just incase they weren't though, you just never know.
I think what could be done to prevent that happening is people who are friends with the veterans coming back could could confirm that it is them. I am just thinking about everyones safety here, ya know :)

Re: I have something to say about veterans coming back
I'm wondering who these psychos are.
Are the people who are getting stalked also the ones who post photos of themselves? The more info you put out on the net, the more likely you're going to get crazies.
But maybe the ones who post lots of info about themselves are promoting themselves in some way that will ultimately increase their income.
Just my thoughts on the matter.

Re: I have something to say about veterans coming back
Not sure who the psychos are, Gordon Ray Parker? There is more crazies out there lurking around I am sure.

Re: I have something to say about veterans coming back
I'll admit it... I'm a psycho.

Re: I have something to say about veterans coming back
umm... while what you're proposing is a potential safety issue, i must say it would be pretty damn hard to exactly re-create someone's writing style. the people who come back, both with their former SN's or under different ones, still have the same posting styles, and the people on this site are pretty damn good at recognizing who people are just by reading a bit. we're damn good at playing detective, too, and if something was even a wee bit fishy i'm sure people would notice it fairly quickly.
the 'vets,' especially, who have a LOT of posts, are pretty easy to recognize- i'm sure someone trying to impersonate them would be 'found out,' tarred, feathered, and banned in a flash.
(edit: how many times did i write "damn good??" god i need to start editing my posts. wow.)

Re: I have something to say about veterans coming back
I agree with others that's its not very likely, but kudos to michele for bringing it up. I sure as hell never thought of that, and I probably should have since I'm an admin on another stripper board and we have to screen out real dancers from posers when we decide who gets access to the industry only sections.

Re: I have something to say about veterans coming back
^ We know that Cam already had an imposter, but we don't know the motives there.
We've also had several ugly stalker issues, so preserving confidential information is critical.
The gift exchanges require that a person have a minimum of 500 posts or somebody to personally vouch for that person. I'm sure we can think of scenarios where people could get around this, but Colette is right -- the imposters would be outted rather quickly.
Anybody even remotely concerned about safety should use a P.O. box or a friend's address in the gift exchanges. Safety is paramount.

Re: I have something to say about veterans coming back
I've confirmed that the people in the exchange are all who they say they are to the best of my ability. But of course there can be phoneys, it's happened before, and it'll happen again.
My thought is that we all just need to do our best, make a careful judgement call, and decide if you're willing to take the risk of being in an exchange, or meeting someone IRL, or anything like that.

Re: I have something to say about veterans coming back
oh darn i cant be in gift exchange? oh well, guess you girls won't get my hand knitted christmas sweaters with embroidered snowflakes lol i know you are crying inside.
-
Re: I have something to say about veterans coming back
Am I the only one who thinks 500 posts doesn't mean crap in insuring the safety of girls' personal information? Any old crafty bastard could make an account and post 500 times.
-
Re: I have something to say about veterans coming back
^^^Agreed. Hence the reason I don't do gift exchanges. I'd change my mind if every single person involved could have another well-known member (who ppl know in real life) vouch that they were a real person and not weird.

Re: I have something to say about veterans coming back
^Yeah, but if we do that, we're "being mean to the newbs unfairly," not to mention being "cliquey."
No matter what we do, we pretty much can't win

Re: I have something to say about veterans coming back

I know. That's the shitty thing. Any newbie with half a brain in their head should be able to process the concept of why we don't want to give out our addresses if we don't know them, but as we've seen in the past they can't. So, whatever.
Any perverted old man could throw up an account here, pretend to be a girl, accumulate the required number of posts and then get our addresses. I'm not about to do a gift exchange on here anytime soon. The Cameron imposter just proved how easy it is to be whoever you want to be on the 'net and fooled a few people (me included), hence why a lot of people don't (and rightfully so) trust new people.

Re: I have something to say about veterans coming back
well, it's a risk you decide if you're willing to take or not.
I am super confused at this imposter thing? anyone want to fill me in?

I agree that newer members shouldn't get to join exchanges. I mean, we've all been new at some point but we also took the time to get established. As far as I've seen, the biggest flakes in the exchanges have been short term or limited post members, probably because they don't have as much of a personal connection to the board.
But, as far as what Kitty said, it would limit the exchange a lot if only well-known people who ALSO knew well-known people in REAL life could exchange. I mean, only one person on this board knows me in real life and she only has like 100 posts. The real life thing just isn't feasible.
ETA: Rereading, Kitty, maybe I read your post wrong? Could you explain what you mean?

I wasn't knocking the brave people that are willing to do it....I just wouldn't personally.
And I missed the Cam imposter thing too. Details? Anybody? How did people figure that one out? Glamazon tipped me off about it in the 'Who Left SW' thread, but there weren't any details I don't think.

No, you read it right....I just sort of wrote it wrong.
Real life doesn't always mean real life. I've actually face-to-face met Mast, Cally, Scarlett.Oz, and a couple of the blueballers (my apologies to anybody I forgot).
On the other hand, several other trusted site members would be able to confirm that I'm who I say I am despite the fact that I've never actually met them in person, you know what I mean? If you've been around long enough, somebody should be able to confidently state that you are exactly who you claim to be and that you're here under good intentions. Even Facebook works for that. You can tell a fake profile from a real 'lived in' one easily.
Ugh. My brain is fried from all my stupid family drama and my batshit crazy aunt. This still isn't sounding right to me, but at least makes a little more sense.

Re: I have something to say about veterans coming back
^ Ooookaaay. I get it now. And I see what you mean about "real life." I'm the only one in my town who posts regularly and has been a member for a bit. I'm sure other people can attest to my real lifeness. Same goes for plenty of others.

Yeah, that's the stuff. Like, I'm sure you have other members on your Facebook or whatever. I do, and they can see my pictures, wall posts, real name, addy, phone number, the whole deal. So even though I've never met them face to face, they still know that I'm real and vice versa. The way I figure, if someone is on here and hasn't made the effort to get to know any members outside of SW, they're not really a good gift exchange candidate anyways. If you don't want to talk to anybody, why gift them?
My two cents, anyway.

^^^^Ohhh.
What a jerkface. Stupid troll.

Re: I have something to say about veterans coming back
Well, what really burns me about it is that I really did think it was her and sent a PM. No sensitive info in it, just my real first name which isn't a big deal, but I'd have still liked her to read it. I bet I wasn't the only one who sent well wishes to this imposter either. I feel like such an idiot.

Re: I have something to say about veterans coming back
the problem with that is not everone has a facebook/myspace/lj.
it is a good idea- in theory tho.
another forum I'm on you need to give the coordinator your phone number, so she can confirm you are who you say. of course- that would screw over our international member then.
-
Re: I have something to say about veterans coming back
Unless the co-ordinator has a killer long distance plan, ha ha. Hoo boy. That's be a pricey verification.
