I'm getting an IUD tomorrow. Anybody have one? Is it going to hurt really bad getting put in? How about afterwards? I'm going on a mini vacation with my bf and on Thursday and it would suck if I'm still hurting then.

It'll still hurt Thursday. :O
I have one and honestly it was sore for a while, like a week and I had spotting after.
Best of luck though because some of my friends had them put in and were fine in two days with no pain at all, so you could be lucky that way.
I love mine though, no hassle at all after getting used to it.
Can you get pain meds?
Mine hurt when they put it in. I have a copper IUD But then i didnt get actual pain for sometime later. My body tried to rejects the IUD and I had contractions. Its was sometimes hard for me to walk. But I never had kids and I am a small person, so maybe it was size of the IUD and getting used to it.
I don't get those pains now. I get just a small amount right before my period, but advil or wine fixes that. It actually made my periods lighter. They start out light, have a day or two heavy then end very light.
I don't regret getting my IUD even thought the two months after were really hard. Not everybody gets pain. When they insert it and them to give you a shot to numb you, it will help a lot.
A little unrelated, but do you have to have kids already in order to get one?
I've had a copper IUD for going on six years now (I got it when I was 20). I do't remember any kind of pain when in was inserted. It was nothing I haven't felt getting a pap smear or anything. I didn't get a shot or anything. I can't even remember if I felt any discomfort afterward. My periods got more regular than they've ever been though. All in all, I'm glad I made the choice to keep it.
I got one last Monday and really wish someone had warned me about the amount of friggen pain involved. I was squirming and my hands turned white from gripping the table. They open your friggen cervix. That shit hurts!!! Dont listen to anyone who says its not painful - I just had it done and ahhh... I shiver just thinking about it. Even the part where they clean your crevix was uncomfortable.
BUT about 5minutes later I was fine. Ive had no cramping. Nothing. Honestly, I could have gone to work that night. I havent bled either. I have had no pain at all - just pain during insertion.
^Ouch! My cervix is already getting sympathy pain.
I didn't get pain meds but they gave me a rx for Misoprostol which is supposed to soften my cervix and make it easier to insert. My appt is at 4 PM today. I'm such a baby I know its going to hurt like hell.
^^^ You have a nice doctor. I swear mine is a sadist. He just told me to take motrin 2 hours before...
HHmmm.. maybe that was part of my deal. I remember them saying that I should go and have it done during my period so my cervix was open or something of that nature. I truely experienced no pain during or after; no cramping or anything. Maybe I have a zen cervix that was perfectly relaxed.
I was fucked up on Valium and it was still screaming agony for me. I mean I literally SCREAMED. I had cramping and pain for a couple of days, and then it went away, and then I got intensely painful cramping and expelled the IUD. It was hanging half out of my cervix, so they had to pull it back out - and that time I didn't have any Valium, so it hurt even worse. The whole experience was horrible and very painful. I wish I was a good candidate for a copper IUD because I'd like to stop taking hormones, but I'm just not! I hope you have better luck with it than I did.
OMG that is terrifying!
Dude, were totally scaring her.
It sucks for a few minutes while inserting it. Takes all of 5 minutes. How your body reacts has to do with *I think* how you normally react. As in, Ive never ever had cramps therefor I didnt have cramps when the IUD went in. Ive never had a heavy period and so I just spotted a little. I think if you typically have hard periods that will transfer over to how well you accept the IUD.
But remember, it hurts a hell of a lot more to push a 8 lb baby outta there... hehehe... thats what I said in the midst of mine getting put in when the doc was saying how sorry he is for the pain...
I think that scurred me away :O Considering my first pelvic exam freaked me out enough to make me puke afterwards.
I should point out that my experience does NOT seem to be the norm. Don't let it put you off. I may not be a natural redhead, but I got all the other redhead traits, including the ridiculously low pain tolerance and the resistance to painkillers (they just don't work on me). Most people are fine with IUD's.
I would get some painkillers on the black market and take them before and after the insertion. But then, I would take pain meds for a hangnail, so you know.;)
Okay, I'm back from my appt. I took the meds to soften my cervix too late, I was supposed to take them last night before bed, and I took them less than an hr before my appt! So much for that! I did take two Motrin.
Yeah it hurt! She was really patient and let me relax when it would hurt really bad. She said that I'll be cramping for about a week.
Glad it went ok! Damn, 10 years - I only got 5 on mine. Im so jealous!
the 5 yr ones is the hormonal one, mine's the copper one. No hormones for me!
^^ yea, mine has turned me into a major emotional bitch... hope this levels out in a few weeks.
My neighbor got pregnant on the copper one with her lovely 5 year old daughter. She scared me from getting it...
Sorry I missed your post before you had it done. I haven't been able to get on SW. When I had my first IUD inserted 5+ years ago it hurt like bloody hell. I recently had it changed out and I was terrified. I begged my doctor to do whatever she could to make it less painful. She prescribed me Xanax and Vicodin. I took both an hour before the procedure and was pretty doped up. then she shot some novacaine into my cervix a couple times. This time it was painful, but not nearly as bad as the excruciating awful pain as before.
