Two good things to know about...
PIN NUMBER REVERSAL (GOOD TO KNOW)If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin # in reverse. For example if your pin number is 1234 then you would put in 4321. The ATM recognizes that your pin number is backwards from the ATM card
you placed in the machine. The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown
to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to help you. > This information was recently broadcasted on TV and it states that it is seldom used because people don't know it exists. Please pass this along to everyone possible.
90# on your telephone
I dialed '0', to check this out, asked the operator, who confirmed that this was correct so please pass it on . .. (I also checked out Snopes.com ... this is true, and also applies to cell phones!)
I received a telephone call last evening from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service Technician (could also be Telus) who was conducting a test on the telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine(9), zero(0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number. I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many local jails/prisons.
DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE.
The GTE Security Department requested that I share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW. After checking with Verizon they also said it was true, so do not dial 90# for anyone!
Re: Two good things to know about...
Where did you hear the first one at? Thats good advice if its true.

I've heard about the pin reversal. I believe the technology for it exists but it hasn't been implemented anywhere in the US yet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATM_SafetyPIN_software. Its best just to go into a 24 hour grocery store and get cash back then to try to use a deserted ATM for safety reasons.
Re: Two good things to know about...
My stepmother forwarded these to me.
Re: Two good things to know about...
What would we all do without Snopes?

CANNOT be true. I have two cards and one is the reverse of the other and I constantly type the wrong one in.

Re: Two good things to know about...
They really should make the pin number thing work! Practical maybe not, but its a really good idea.
Re: Two good things to know about...
My only concern about the pin number thing is that if the cops roll up while the guy is forcing you to withdraw cash it could turn into a potential hostage situation. This is why tellers are instructed to only press the panic buttons after the robber has left. They or other customers could be taken hostage and gunfire could be an issue if the cops were to come in and demand he put down any weapons. Using a cell phone afterwards would be better.
The drawback would be if the guy then kidnapped you and no one would know where you went.
ATMs after daylight are very dangerous spots. I think prevention is the best tactic.
Re: Two good things to know about...
Yeah, I can't say for a fact these are true but they were sent to me and seemed like good advice.:-\
Re: Two good things to know about...
too bad it's not enforced. It would be wise to have an atm panic system. However, it has been my view that banks no longer care about their consumers, only their consumer's money.

I would hate it. Y'know how many times I would've falsely called the cops by now? what about palindromes? 2002 is the opposite of 2002 and then if you hesitate the gunman knows it... and by the time the money comes out the cops will not be there and the guy'll be gone.

Great tip but how effective will the cops be once the robber is gone??
Re: Two good things to know about...
DAMN! That'd be really cool and handy if that was true.
Re: Two good things to know about...
It's on par with the "forward this message and something amazing will happen".
