I say just practice at work when no ones looking or there aren't very many people at your rack. i practice when there's just a couple guys, and when i screw up i just smile and giggle and usually get tipped for it.
OT.. but.. you're in New zealand?? which club are you at? I can't believe there's no pole classes in NZ.. I'm moving there in 3 months.
edit: I just found two studios : one in wellington and one in hamilton
lol, I'm in auckland, that's a long drive for a lesson.
there used to be classes but they stopped a week before I started working. I'm still hunting now:)
you're right, I think I should just practise - I hate embarrassing myself in front of people though, but hey, I'm already naked, so why worry??
I'd warn you off The Studio (polefitness.co.nz) anyway. I used to teach there and finally left in disgust over their business practices. Actually 6 of their top tutors left, two moved away and the rest of us are setting up a new place. Anyway, that's in Wellington, so doesn't help you.
(edit: I just noticed that I'm still listed on their site as a yoga instructor, even though I never agreed to take yoga lessons and told Sharyn quite firmly that I would not teach yoga well over a year ago. Amusing.)
http://www.polefitnessnewzealand.co.nz is in Auckland and another of my pole girls (who moved to Auckland) has been to these classes and recommends them.
Is it possible for you to go to work an hour early to practise on the pole?
I am new to dancing and don't really know how to do anything on the pole.
When I am at work and it is slow I have girls teach me some pole tricks and practice them on the side stage. Then when I feel ready I do them on the main stage in front of customers. If I screw up (which does happen =) ) I just laugh and continue on.
I also googled "pole tricks" on the web and watched videos then practiced them at work.
Don't worry about what others think. That is one thing you need to overcome or else you will never progress.
always point your toes! it makes things look a lot better. i have to say i hate watching girls do pole tricks when it looks like it takes all their effort or when they climb the pole and cant get half way up it. but then again theres no other way to get good at it besides practice and if you dont have your own pole, thats where you have to do it.
that being said, pole tricks dont really affect most girls stage tips.
thanks murdoch, I'll look into that :-) I like feeling like I know what I'm doing when I do things, so pole classes are probably the best way to go for me
glamgirl, unfortunately in my situation, I get there at opening, so it's a bit out of the question, which is a shame
elizabeth - i want to ask the other girls, but some of them intimidate me, and unfortunately the ones that do are the more experienced ones!
ibreathein - yeah, I know it doesn't affect tips much, but I feel silly just doing the same couple of things over and over again, and would like to be able to mix it up a little more :D
Watch some videos on youtube. This is my favorite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-93lGFQ8LNE
