Improving truth on Job apps.
So there is one job i like, and i think that i might need to fib and say i am fluent in a language... because in order to get a phone interview there are certain qualifications. And i know that lying is bad, but a lot of people improve the truth on applications to get farther. I dont thing i really need to be fluent, but in order for it to go through i think it needs to say that i am. And if i get a phone interview i will write down all the questions and answers and learn them perfectly before it happens so i look better. I havent ever done something like this. Has anybody else done anything similar? Did it work? Or i could fill it in and say i am advanced with the language and if that doesnt work, and i get rejected, i just delete my account again, apply again and claim to be fluent. sigh.
Re: Improving truth on Job apps.
But its an online app. does that count? :P
Besides, I decided i want to be fluent. So maybe i should pretend until i really feel it.... Denial denial
Re: Improving truth on Job apps.
And then what? Get the job and feel like an ass and get fired when they call on you to use the skills you claim to have, but don't? Not a good idea.
Re: Improving truth on Job apps.
I think it would depend on how good you are. If you are good enough to carry a formal conversation and are advanced anyway, you would probably get away with it with a but of preparation. In this situation, I'd just put down that I was fluent.
What language is it anyway?
Re: Improving truth on Job apps.
Deutsch!!! (ahem.. Germany)
And i can carry conversations. I just need to learn the important vocab that have to do with this job.
Re: Improving truth on Job apps.
^^^ The thing is that this job they want the person to be fluent in English addition. And some people at the job will only be speaking english.

In that situation I think you'll be fine and are able to put fluent. Just make sure you know all the vocab before the interview.
I studied Japanese and I know even the most fluent speakers don't know all the specialised vocab for everything.
Re: Improving truth on Job apps.
Argh. I kind of feel like the devil's advocate ;D
Re: Improving truth on Job apps.
i dont know, because i have read on a forum that other people said their english was bad and they were fearing, so i atleast have the plus of being fluent in english when other people struggle
Re: Improving truth on Job apps.
Well, it is for a flight attendant position. This is why is doesnt seem so urgent to be completely fluent in german. Good yes, but in all reality i doubt i will be speaking german the entire time.
Re: Improving truth on Job apps.
Pookie, if they want you to be fluent in Deutsch, and you're not, they won't take kindly to you wasting their time.
Re: Improving truth on Job apps.
so what exactly is the criteria for being fluent?
Re: Improving truth on Job apps.
I would say for that job, in all likelihood, all you'll be doing is serving drinks and food-BUT-what if there were an emergency situation? You'd definitely need to be fluent then. I wouldn't risk lying where you could potentially put someone's life in danger.
Re: Improving truth on Job apps.
id say go for it! If you know enough to get by then u can use what u know and learn more as you go! Im sure they wont expect perfection in the other language just a general knowlege. If it turns out you dont know enough they will let you know.
DONT sell yourself short.
It sounds like you REALLY want this
Re: Improving truth on Job apps.
They have an option for advanced, and i think i am gonna choose that over fluent, and if i dont get a phone interview then maybe i will reapply with fluent.
Even in an emegency situation not everybody on the plane understands germany anyway, and besides there is training for those situations anyway.
Re: Improving truth on Job apps.
So i passed the first part of the application, the online part. Now i have to be able to pass a phone interview. Thats going to be more tricky because its going to be in German (and English). But Im guessing once they hear my English accent they will only interview me in German.
Im nervous but excited.
