Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
Red hair is so damn high-maintenance! I'm thinking of going for a dark brunette. I think the right shade of dark hair might really make my eyes pop, and I think there's got to be a shade out there that would play up my creamy skin and freckles - like the "Black Irish" look.
I have no idea what shade that would be though. I have pink/blue undertones and the kind of thick freckles you usually see on a redhead, with blue eyes. My hair is almost chin-length now (and I'm also looking for a cuter, more feminine cut while I keep growing it out). Anybody got pictures, tips, inspiration? I'm really worried about looking fake and/or looking old.

I do think the pale skin with dark hair can look stunning when done so in the right way. Some of my favorite celebs with this look, Carly Smithson, Amy Lee, Rose McGowan. Although they're usually really made up & don't show they're freckles, I know Rose & Carly do have some. =)
Unfortantely I don't have any tips as I'm a brown skinned baby. =D But hopefully the pics get your thoughts stirring.

Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
Yeah, I was also thinking maybe a richer, darker auburn.
It just fades so quickly, and my roots are so ashy that they show immediately. And it looks dirty all the time with ashy roots, but I don't want to get my roots redone every other week. And the color REALLY fades.

Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
Do you get it done at a salon or do it yourself? I swear salon color is designed to look really good for a short while, then fade like hell to keep you coming back. When I was red I would lighten my roots a little so they color would stick better, then tone it. Or I would go to Sally Beauty supply and get a dye and use it with 30 volume developer so it's REALLY stuck.

Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
My stylist told me red is the hardest color to hold so that is probably the problem.
-
Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
as long as you do a brown with some red in it, even a little, it should be able to look good.

Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
I'm a natural redhead with fair skin and freckles and I bought a box of burgundy hair dye for $2.97 at wal-mart and I freaking loved it. Excuse the stupid expression and bad resizing job, but here's a pic:

Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
I love your red hair! At any rate, I would try to keep hte reddish tones in it. Maybe do like a darker auburn.

Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
That burgundy looks amazing on you, loveandluxury! I think it would look really fake on me though.
The more I think about it, the more I think I should stick with red and just go much darker than what I have. I have kind of a copper right now, and I'd like to go with a deeper, richer auburn. I just found this pic and love it, although it makes me want to cry because that used to be the same length and texture I had before... argh, I was so close and it's taking so damn long to grow it back out.

Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
I'd suggest something in a light brown at first. I think it'll be easier for you to warm up to it instead of just going really dark suddenly. A shade that is too dark might wash you out also. If you have been chemically processing your hair and/or use a lot of heat on it then you are probably porous. Anything darker than a level 5 (light brown) is going to be too dark. Do you have a picture of yourself now so I/we can determine your color/tones and what cut you could do? I think a natural tone (even mix of blue, red and yellow) might look nice or a light golden tone. Ask to look at some swatches and see how you like a level 6N, 5N, 5G and 6G. Hold them up to your face. Remember that the color swatches in on white hair so it will appear lighter than the actual color is.
As far a cut I would need to see your face shape and hair cut/style now. Is you hair naturally curly or wavy?
Also, I don't know how you feel about Aveda but their with their color line they can add in the tones to make you as golden or ash as you wish. I wouldn't add to much gold(y/o) to you since you already warm. Nor would I add much ash (violet/blue) tones to you.

Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
My natural hair is VERY ashy, pretty much grey (has been since I was a kid). It's pretty wavy and holds a curl well, though sometimes I straighten it around my face and curl up the rest of it. Here's me as a blonde...

It is not neccesary to use a 30 volume unless you are going three shades lighter on virgin hair. I'd use a 20 on your new growth. You are just chemically ripping the cuticle wide open and throwing the color out when you do that. I use a 20 even on my clients that have dark roots and are going light with enlightner(bleach). I only use 30 on the last few sections of hair I am finishing so it won't take as long. If you open the cuticle wide open and tone the toner is going to take darker than it normally would but fade faster as well.
Red does fade faster. A good color conserving shampoo will help with the fading. If your stylist can customize your color I'd ask for a couple more grams of red/orange to be thrown in. It might be more intense but it'll last longer.

Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
I like the color in the middle picture the best although the picture looks a bit dark. I agree that auburn would be nice. But it could still wash you out if it is too dark. I think a level 5 or 6 would be best for your skin tone. Again, I'd compare swatches. Instead of asking for a yellow/gold tone or neutral tone I'd look for a red/orange tone. If you buy boxed color from OTC your hair might be a dark orange because their is likely more ammonia in the box color. Since you already have a red/orange tone red/red or red/violet (burgandy) could be an option but once again if you buy OTC color it again it could turn out darker than you wish. I've seen some box colors turn out really pretty but also some turn out really shitty. It's a gamble. It's also hard for stylists to work with hair that is box colored because it's usually not evenly distrubuted throughout the head plus the hair tends to be porous as hell.
If you choose to apply it yourself your best bet would be going to Sally's and looking the swatch book. They have one for each color line they carry. Pick the one that you feel like matches your skin tone the best. Get a 10 volume developer unless you have resistant grey hair which doubt but in that case use a 20. I only use a 20 on clients that are more than 30% grey.
Cut wise they isn't much you can do but get a few long layers if you are trying to grow it out. The graduated concave bob is really cute but I don't know if would be flattering for your face shape and it would take off a substancial portion of the back of your hair.

Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
I am studying your picture a bit and think a 5 with red/red tones would be nice. I think I'd cut back on the orange tones. Chin length looks cute on you a few layers in the back will give you more volume and movement.

Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
I'm definitely not going to color it myself. I just want to be able to tell the stylist what I want. I'm still leaning towards a very dark auburn; I'm not afraid of looking "washed out" because I love being pale and I think the pale-skin-dark-hair look is really sexy. I think it would really draw out my eyes.
My hair is already pretty deeply layered. It started out thick and wavy and almost waist-length, and then this EVIL fucking cunt of a stylist gave me one of those hipster mullets. I had the long wisps of the mullet cut off, and I've had the back tapered a bit, and I'm trying to grow out the top short layer (which is about to the top of my ear right now). I was thinking of shortening the lower layers to bring it all closer together, maybe getting a cut like this but in dark auburn. What do y'all think? Would it look good with my face shape?

Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
That's cute and your face shape is similiar to hers.

Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
I like your hair with the partial wig better - let it grow!
-
Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
I am DEFINITELY letting it grow. Trust me. I HATE looking in the mirror every day with short hair, it makes me miserable. The problem is that the top layer only reaches to the tip of my ear, and the weird erratic lengths all over just look stupid most of the time. It's a real bitch to make it look presentable and it never looks good. I want a different style for while it grows out.

Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
I'm in the same situation. I'm wearing extensions and just letting the awkwardness be awkward while it grows. Length is length in my opinion - I would only cut off what absolutely needs to be so your layers are uniform and wear the half wig at work.
Remember when you were a teenager and it seemed like your hair grew a foot a year?

Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
If you have that many layers especially with textured hair I wouldn't cut anything but the hair off the perimeter, no layers at all.
You can style it various ways using the flat iron to straighten it. You can dry it pretty straight and put some hot rollers in or put some velcro ones in damp for big sexy waves/curls. You can experiment with bobby pins and try to pull up your bangs or do something of an updo. I've seen girls do all types of things with short hair. Some wear scarves or hats for added style too. There are head bands you can buy at Target with the elastic in back. I wear a head band frequently to hold my top layer back when working. I like to wear mine on my hair line. Even the back combed hair style mentioned in another thread half up would be cute. I'd just experiment with product and styling techniques. Also ask her for styling suggestions.
I'd get my ends shaped up off the perimeter, tell her no more than half an inch unless you have serious split ends. . Bring in photos also of the middle picture you posted and other color pics you like. I know with me I love getting pics when someone wants a specific cut, color or style.

Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
The wig got all nappy and snarled and I can't fix it, and it's really hot and uncomfortable. I can't wear it. The top layer is still way too short for extensions. I have to find a way to make it look okay the way it is, though short hair just looks so ugly on me. I haven't felt sexy since February, before I got my hair hacked off. It's really depressing.
I know what you mean, too. When I was 19 I could sit on my hair. I'd give anything to have that length back, anything at all! It was so sexy and gorgeous, it was totally worth the hassle.

I'm having a hard time picturing these styles. What do you mean?
Straight hair doesn't look good on me, especially short. I have kind of a wide face and broad shoulders, and I need big hair to balance it out. My hair looks best really big and with a lot of texture. As for rollers, I have a hard time using them in the back because the hair is too short. Usually I use the skinny little curling iron (it's just slightly thicker than a pencil) and wear a headband for a bit of volume in the back. I'm just tired of that style and it doesn't really suit me anyway, I just can't figure out anything else to do with it.
I swear I will never forgive that woman for cutting off my hair, ARGH. May she suffer all the torments of the damned, after she dies a long and painful death from tertiary syphilis.
Anyway, if you have pictures of the styles you're describing, that would help!

Re: Pale freckled skin with dark hair?
I'll look for some pics for ya. Your hair is wavy/curly which what we call "textured". When she put layers in your hair she cut on the "interior" hair thus making it "bigger" all over. People with textured hair who have no layers get the "Christmas tree effect" which means your hair looks like a Christmas tree, lol. The hair gets wider towards the bottom as it grows. The layers give the hair more balance.
You can use a few larger rollers on top and let the hair around the bottom just be as it is. The spiral curls you showed of Drew Barrymore were also cute. I seem to have no problem posting pics tonight, lol.
