Particularly around the London way in November & January??

I'm going there in a month. I'll let you know, but I was just there in June and it was cold! like 50s.
And EXPENSIVE! A one hour bus ride cost me the equivalent of $150.
^^ HOLY CRAP! I guess lucky for me I'm staying at his house!!!!! I'd hate to see what two weeks would run me in a hotel. Ooooooh, hehe, I'm excited... for you too! Definitely tell me how it goes!
I'm going to a wedding. I don't even want to think about what this is going to cost. I booked the room in pounds and I'm pretending like it is dollars. :P
I just laughed so loud!!!!!! Like one of those obnoxious "OMG, did that come out of me!?"
Do you mind if I ask how long you're going to be there? Are you staying around London or in it? ... Or going any where tourist-y?
Usually my friend just comes to here, but since he broke his wrist & needs surgery, I figured I'd make the hop across the pond! I love saying that!
You should PM The_Oceans- he knows all about England. ;)
it's in Oxford. I'm definitely going to try to get some touristy things in, but I'm only going for a weekend. I'm still psyched! I love that my friend had the balls to plan a wedding there. I have a legit reason to go.
"the pond"....I like that too.
Im British, what exactly do you want to know about?
^^ Everything? :D Anything that you personally enjoyed about the area, I'd like to take an open mind to.
OMG $150! I took a bus from London to Manchester (5 hour ride) for 8 pounds! Did you already book that bus Emily? Let me find the website with the cheap buses. ETA:
I also found it to be warmer than NJ in the winter (I went in January). But wetter. It's not that expensive (other than the pound/dollar thing) if you plan it out and have a place to stay. I went to a stage production of Rocky Horror for 10 pounds. I mostly ate dinner at my hostel. Tesco brand foods are v. tasty. I loved al the museums I could get to, but it depends on your tastes!
Well, from November-January is the dead of winter, so for one thing, it'll start getting dark around 4:00-4:30 in the afternoon, and it doesn't get light until after 7:00 in the morning.
Weather-wise, expect it to be cool (single-digits Celsius, so in the 40s Fahrenheit), and rain is likely.
If you're going to be staying predominantly in London, I feel the public transportation is outstanding. There's absolutely no reason to drive a car if you're within the M25 (the London ring road or beltway). A travelcard will allow you passage via the Underground and bus network. If you're out after midnight, there is an extensive Night Bus service as well.
What is the general attitudes toward different races in england?
^London is a melting pot, it remains the most multicultural city I've lived in, and I've lived all over the world. The rest of the country I'm not so sure.
I was just in London a few weeks ago on vacation. To be honest, after hearing how expensive it was going to be from friends, etc, I didn't find it to be all that different price wise then living in Vancouver (which is also a pretty expensive place to live). So, the whole time I was there, I thought everything was quite reasonable.
Shopping was pretty much the same price wise. OMG, Harrods and Selfidges (the two main high end department stores) were amazing! At Harrods, they have a whole section of Christian Louboutin shoes! I've never seen anything like it, online or otherwise.
Food wasn't too bad either. I would suggest eating more like a local than eating at restaurants (which did seem pretty expensive). They have great to-go places like Marks and Spencer and Tesco, where one can get awesome salads and sandwiches. So yummy, I actually took pictures of the food before I ate it.
London was fine. Paris was expensive beyond belief! For example, I went to a Paris club and paid 20 euros for ONE double vodka redbull. That equals $35 for ONE drink! Luckily, I was there when all the stores were having their sales (which only happens twice a year in France), so I was able to buy some amazing clothes.
But, I much prefered London over Paris. London was much more young and vibrant. Everyone was super helpful and friendly, really easy to travel there alone. After such a great experience, I'm actually thinking of moving there for a year or so. Hopefully this helps you. Although, expect London to be pretty rainy and gross in the Winter. That doesn't bother me, but it might you.
Oh, also, I would suggest just getting a Oyster card (a card to get on all the buses and the Underground). I took the big red buses all over London and it was a great cheap way to sight see (especially when you sit on the top). As well, most of the museums and galleries are by donation only, so you can just pay what you can afford. So awesome if you're into that sort of thing like I am.
In November or January it'll be cold. The UK isn't generally warm, but then it certainly won't be warm.
As noted above, it'll be expensive too. But since the pound isn't doing well in the markets, like the dollar, Europe is getting more expensive at the moment.
FAO Emily, you might like to check out National Express for coaches too. I often use them and their fares can be very competitive. Their 'funfare' tickets start at £1 for many locations to and from London.
If you are in Oxford, I went to an Oxfordshire village a few months back for the funeral of a close friend. Ascott-Under-Wychwood. Pretty much the nicest Cotswold village I have seen - and I am from the Cotswolds and have seen a lot of them. You'll love it.
I'd offer my famous Cotswold village tour, but I don't think I'll be in the country then. Hope you have a nice trip though.
I was in England (the London area) during the Spring of '99... so I don't have anything to offer except that I thought it was the cutest, quaintest little country, and I would LOVE to go back someday. The British were the friendliest people, and all we did was joke about how we couldn't understand eachother. :D They were pretty fascinated with the way I talked.
Wow! Thanks everyone... Oh Darling, funny you bring up Paris Marty(my friend) wanted to take me overnight to there. I'm glad it'll be cold & possibly rainy (or certainly rainy) - it'll be a happy experience to get away from Arizona. Bleh. :)
OH, and we're doing the LONDON EYE... Haha, I accidentally called it a ferris wheel last night & Marty had to correct me!
Oh... He lives in Epsom & he said we were going shopping in Camden??? -> I think that's right... he showed me a photo & it looks awesome!!!!! Anyone, suggest any shops round that way to check out?
You'll love camden, there are lots of alternative shops and boutiques, and cool little bars and coffe shops. There's also Camden Lock market which is really well know for all its quirky and vintage stalls, although a chunk of it burned down last year:(
Theres a real mix of people, you'll see familys, goths, students, punk rockers, all sorts. Its also a good place for buying dancing shoes and clothes. Its best on a Saturday or Sunday, theres a great atmosphere. Its really packed on these days though so expect crowds, its so busy the tube station is only open for people getting off, you can't board at Camden at the weekend you have to go to the other tube station up the road.
A friend of mine used to live in Epsom so I know it quite well. It a suburb of London and its nice enough, there's not really alot of touristy stuff though. The good thing is your only about 40mins on the train from central London so its easy enough to get in and out.
