ugh. this sucks. a rant about my lousy pet ownership
i decided to get a puppy to keep my cat and I company (my cat is unusually active). well its not working out as i had hoped. my cat HATES the puppy. not hissing typical cat hate, but sneaky "im going to bite you after i pretend to be interested in your prescence" type of hate. my cat watches the little girl like hes planning on killing her when im sleeping. my cat is like my first child - i feel terrible that hes uncomfortable with the puppy. on top of all this im having allergic reactions the the puppy- which is weird because ive never had this issue as a child or with my moms dog. i kind of feel like i should put her back up for adoption since she hasnt made my house a "home" yet and were having issues. she is so sweet and id love to keep her but i cant imagine putting up with these things for 15+ years of the puppies life. but i also feel like such an asshole when i think of selling her to someone else. like i should have known about these things before they happened and could have prevented all this by just not adopting her. ugh. this sucks. i feel like a bad pet owner. :(
/rant. thanks for listening
Re: ugh. this sucks. a rant about my lousy pet ownership
how long have you had the puppy? the cat may just have to get used to her, though about the allergies i sympathize as i am deathly allergic to cats.
Re: ugh. this sucks. a rant about my lousy pet ownership
That's a tough one. It's not your fault BTW the situation, but if you feel like your cat is going to harm the puppy it's not a good situation. Also if you're allergic you really can't help it.
I think it's a better idea to give the puppy up for adoption if you feel that another family could give it a better home, but PLEASE don't take it to the humane society, try to find a family on Craigslist or something to give it to. If you can avoid shelters that's really better, since there is a chance they could put your dog to sleep if it's not addopted :(
Re: ugh. this sucks. a rant about my lousy pet ownership
Many people with alergies can live with pets. Google it and you'll get ton of results for suggestions on how to keep the dander to a minimum. As for the cat...give them time. she's used to being an only child and now she has to share. Her routine was disrupted. My cats hated my puppy when I got him. They did the sneak attack to. He would just walk past them and alll the sudden a cat woul reach out and swat his face. But it got better....it took months though.
dont give up on the puppy just yt, try it out for awhile first, just need some time for everyone to adjust
Re: ugh. this sucks. a rant about my lousy pet ownership
have you bathed the puppy since you got it, maybe you should try that.
but ill tell you i cannot live with a cat no matter what i do. even if i get allergy shots, it only makes me a little less miserable.
Re: ugh. this sucks. a rant about my lousy pet ownership
it can take a long time for animals to get along. my mom has 2 dogs and a cat. the first dog hated the 2nd for a good year. then the cat came and he was pissy about that, too. theyre fine now, though.
as for giving the dog to another family, you might not be allowed to do that. if you got it through a shelter theres a chance that it's illegal to do that and if they find out they will take the dog away from the other family.
Re: ugh. this sucks. a rant about my lousy pet ownership
My girl cats HATED my dog at first. One would merely hide under the bed, while the other went on the attack. It took months, but they get along much better now. When I took in four abandoned male kittens, however, they fell in love with the dog, and the dog took to them as if they were her own puppies. Weird.
Re: ugh. this sucks. a rant about my lousy pet ownership
^I've had kittens accept other animals well too - which is why I was so shocked about my cat hating her.
Do you think my cat being an asshole to her will affect her mentality as she grows? I don't want to her to have a wrong impression about my cat and live like that the rest her life :(
I'm going to try bathing her and see if that helps my allergies.
PB- Did you see month to month improvement in your cats behaviour toward the dog or was it like a sudden change of heart?
If I decide its a no go I'll probably have to give her back to the owners because I signed a contract saying I would. And I'm guessing if she's registered with AKC by someone other than me the people I bought her from would know? I've never registered an animal with AKC so I'm not really sure how that works.
Re: ugh. this sucks. a rant about my lousy pet ownership
^^^ I have really bad cat allergies and I have 2 cats in a 300 sqt apartment (my place is fucking tiny). Besides regular vacumning and brushing, I got an air purifier. It takes out the allergens and has helped my allergies immensely. It was expensive, about $400 for the smallest one, but WELL worth it.
