Re: WTF???? "McConaughey to plant son's placenta in orchard"
i don't think it's all that weird. i mean, aside from the grossness of a placenta in general.

Re: WTF???? "McConaughey to plant son's placenta in orchard"
Planting placenta under a tree is something humans have been doing for thousands of years. Beats the hell out of anything else you could do with it. It's full of nutrients, might as well let something living benefit from it.

He's probably attempting to grow some more belly fruit... ;)

Re: WTF???? "McConaughey to plant son's placenta in orchard"
Don't you have to let things decompose into compost before it's any benefit to the future flora?

Re: WTF???? "McConaughey to plant son's placenta in orchard"
I think it's just being made to seem like another weird celeb thing. But it's not unheard of in a lot of cultures, just doesn't really happen in ours.

Re: WTF???? "McConaughey to plant son's placenta in orchard"
I know there was a SW member and her SO who ate her babies placenta...
Its really not that uncommon
not my thing though

Re: WTF???? "McConaughey to plant son's placenta in orchard"
Interesting. Doesn't seem so strange to me... Except for the image of sexy Matthew McConaughey carrying placenta around?

That's what it does in the ground under the tree.

Re: WTF???? "McConaughey to plant son's placenta in orchard"
Burying placenta is a common practice in many cultures. Any decomposed organic matter is good for plant life.
Many animals (including humans) also eat their placentas. Some midwives and other health professionals advocate eating the placenta after the birth to stop bleeding as the placenta contains hormones that may induce contractions of the uterus that would stifle the flow of blood. I have never eaten placenta, but have come across different recipes for it--stewed being one way. Other people simply dry and grind it and add it to dishes in the pulverized form, or in pill form. I would guess it tastes fairly benign in dry pulverized form. The benifits of eating it aren't "scientifically" aka western medicine proven, but are anectdotally recognized across the globe. My 2 cents. E

The placenta is full of vitamins and things like iron, so it's great nutrition for a woman who just gave birth. However, in this country and at my socioeconomic status, I'd rather just buy some liver and vitamins. :D

*raises hand* It's not that gross if you can get over the whole "self-cannibalism" stigma.

Re: WTF???? "McConaughey to plant son's placenta in orchard"
We planted the placenta from Aaron's birth in our garden. Doing well, so far.
Actually, they encourage women (at least in other cultures) to consume the placenta to ward off post partum depression...I've not heard of the idea that it helps stop the bleeding (that's what breastfeeding is for).

At least it's not his son that he is planting.

Thanks for being considerate, PV. I'm pretty open about it though.

I have two babies and I think placentas are awesome. How cool is it that women can *grow* a whole organ and then get rid of it when we are done?

Re: WTF???? "McConaughey to plant son's placenta in orchard"
Not WTF to me. I use placental treatments in my hair all the time.

I have to know, what's it taste like?
