I was wandering around in Borders yesterday (:heartbeat that store) and found myself in the self-help section. I had been wanting to check out some of the books recommended in Hustle Hut for good techniques in winning over people and sales, but as I looked around I saw book after book that seemed to apply to my life and that I felt compelled to pick up. I started getting a little upset because it seemed EVERY problem in my life was addressed by these books--my anxiety and stress, personal finance issues, attracting the wrong type of men, "sweating the small stuff" (something I definitely do), de-cluttering for pack rats, achieving sexual satisfaction, taking control of one's life...basically every title seemed to speak personally to ME. Maybe that's the point of these books, but it was a little discouraging to recognize all the issues I seem to be having all summed up in the titles of self-help books.
Have you found self-help books to be, well, helpful? Have you conquered any issues in your life through the assistance of these books? Any in particular that are worth reading?
This past year has been overwhelmingly difficult for me--I've just had one problem after another--and I feel really out of control of everything that's been happening in my life and I want to recover a sense of myself and what I'm actually trying to achieve in my life. Counseling has never worked for me, antidepressants don't seem to have an effect. I need to actually be proactive, I think, and I'm wondering if a book can really get me on the right path.
Thoughts?
