paying someone to do your taxes?
So, I did my taxes for one quarter that I was working. It was really confusing (maybe bc I didn't spend enough time on it). I stopped working since then and have started again. I think I just want to hire someone to do it for me this time. But, I was wondering, if I just tell that person I'm a promotional modeling, do you think they'll raise eyebrows if I earn about a $500-1000 a week? Or should I tell them I am a dancer, but I prefer that it not be stated on my taxes.
Also, what should I look up for online when looking for someone to help me do this? Thanks for any help you guys can give me. ;D
Re: paying someone to do your taxes?
My taxes say "Self employed" and "Entertainer."
Yes, It is worth it to go to a professional. See some who specializes in self employed.
Re: paying someone to do your taxes?
Maybe it's bc I'm in PDX, but I had no problem finding a CPA I was comfortable with. You should be able to get a free consultation before they prepare your taxes anyway. I found a couple places in town and I called them and asked if they did self-employment stuff.. then specified it would be for that. The 2nd place was very cool with it, so then I went in and we went through the exact kind of deductions I'd be able to take. I've used them for the past two years. (PDX girls I can shoot you a referral if you'd like)
BTW do not go through a firm like H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt. I have seen their 'now hiring' ads and they say things like 'Have fun and earn extra money by preparing taxes! Just one easy class!' Hellllll no!
Re: paying someone to do your taxes?
Thanks so much! Should I tell them I'm dancer, or should I just say I'm self-employed and leave it at that? OR do I need to make up something like I'm a promo model?
Re: paying someone to do your taxes?
You need to find someone youre comfortable enough to tell that youre a dancer. Problem is there are different write offs for models (travel, etc) than for a dancer.
Re: paying someone to do your taxes?
Hmmm..I was hoping I could avoid saying I was a dancer so not to be jipped or anything. Or judged & thus feeling uncomfortable with them.
Re: paying someone to do your taxes?
If youre being judged or feel uncomfortable find someone else. I have an old man do my taxes. Hes never overcharged me and hes never made me feel uncomfortable. You dont have to go with the first person you meet. Call around and ask about fees for self employed individuals. Get an estimate beforehand to avoid being overcharged if thats what you are worried about.

Frankly it shouldn't matter. If I were doing your taxes I'd ask you what you do so that it would help me help you. But it really wouldn't matter if you said entertainer or actress or whatever (if you are uncomfortable saying you dance). I'm curious and like to get to know my clients so I'd probably inquire further and if someone told me they were a dancer it wouldn't matter, but you never know, CPA's are people too and there are all kinds.

I use TurboTax Online. It's extremely thorough, covers pretty much any scenario you can think of, doesn't cost a lot (about $40 to file) and you don't have to tell anybody anything.
