Re: You knew this was going to be a result of Obama getting elected
Makes me wish I owned a gun shop in Texas. $200 price increase on average in one day? That is amazing.

Re: You knew this was going to be a result of Obama getting elected
The "Great Gun Bubble of 2008" :D

I tend to think that gun ownership is not a freedom.

In America it is.

If I had any desire to own an assault rifle, I'd buy it before the year ends.
-
Re: You knew this was going to be a result of Obama getting elected
^^^ I did the same about a year ago ... Beretta CX4 in .40 S&W ( which uses same bullets as my Baby Eagle pistol )

I know. Damn strange. It's not as if murder is a legal right, so it strikes me as odd that murder weapons should be.

Re: You knew this was going to be a result of Obama getting elected
And why the fuck are assault rifles legal? That's crazy.

Cuz it's a country ruled by the people for the people.

No one needs an AK-47. Hunting rifles, pistols, etc make sense to own, seeing as they have purposes other than slaughtering people on a large scale.
-
Re: You knew this was going to be a result of Obama getting elected
actually, conventional hunting rifles are heavy and difficult to control for somebody that is only 5'3" tall and fairly skinny. A short stock rifle actually winds up being much more accurate.

You... Are... So... Right!
I was just thinking that the gun that grew legs and chased me away from my own truck was just looney. /sarcasm
You can think guns are evil all you want, but the guns are truly unbiased.
It's the carrier that does the real damage.
Hell, I can aim a gun at a person and it wont fire until I pull the trigger.

Re: You knew this was going to be a result of Obama getting elected
I'm all for the right to bear arms but I support strict regulation. A family member of mine is mentally ill and has purchased guns on several occasions (in strict CA!) during psychotic and depressive episodes with the intent to commit suicide. Tragedies like Columbine might have been avoided if more thorough psychological screening were done to qualify people for gun ownership.

I agree with u also.
I want to but a gun one day for protection.
Why would you feel the need for a AK-47?

Re: You knew this was going to be a result of Obama getting elected
Do people in Texas not read newspapers? Didn't the SCOTUS just reaffirm the 2nd Amendment? Red-Staters sure are a panicky bunch.
And Mel, it appears you're going to have to leave your new toy at home when you renounce your citizenship and flee to Costa Rica.

Maybe it's just that they don't read history books, since SCOTUS affirmed that right over thirty years ago.
Yeah but nobody ran out and got abortions before they had the chance to take the right away. LOL!

psychological screen would be far too expensive. background checks are sufficient, if you even have an outstanding ticket for not paying for a dog license you cant purchase a gun. plus there is a cool off period for everyone unless they have their conceal/carry so if someone is that determined to kill themselves im sure they would find other ways other than a gun. i am a proud owner of a 38 and 45, its nice to know if someone breaks in to my place and my dog doesnt get to them first i can still defend myself.

Ruled by the People?? When did that happen? (We just pick people who we hope will rule us the way that benefits us. Good luck on that.)
More likely it's because scared people want to have protection from the crazed lunatics that will overrun their bungalow and steal all their belongings just after murdering their family.
Problem is the crazed lunatics have already bought their multiple assault rifles and grenades and have taken training in some reactionary-oriented mountain camp led by ex-CIA mercenaries, so they will win.

I've never ran a background check on anyone, but would any stays at psychiatric hospitals (voluntary or involuntary) show up?

In theory, at least, involuntary commitments are supposed to show up. The reporting systems between the Feds and 50 different states are such an inconsistent patchwork, it's been more likely than not to fall through the cracks.
After the Virginia Tech shooting, both Congress and the states started to close some loopholes (with even the NRA supporting some of the changes). It's still not perfect but it's improving.
To refresh my memory I googled va tech background checks and lots of news stories showed up - too many for me to paste all the links here.
Eventually, yes.
