Not too young. Animals begin to hunt in nature as soon as they are no longer feeding off their Mom. Maybe a tank alarm of some sort will remind your guy to close the tank.

My kitty ate my beta fish..twice.
Maybe you should feed the fishies instead of your boyfriend,that way you know the lid is closed..
although,my cat learned how to open the lid..

our betta had a very close and ultimately miraculous encounter with bf's roommate's curious kitten.
the cat managed to knock the bowl off of the high shelf it was on, and it landed on the floor upside down - but didn't break, and kept all of the water and the fish in it. pretty incredible if you ask me.

Your problem is your boyfriend is too young. The kitten is OK. Hunting is what cats do. Protecting your goods is what your boyfriend is supposed to do.
