Indian Navy: 3 Repulsed Pirate Attacks In Last Month
The most recent piracy incident in the Gulf of Aden involving the Indian Navy repulsing a pirate attack on a merchant ship, culminating in the capture of 23 pirates makes it at least 3 "scores" for India in the "war" against the pirates since 11 November. (More details can be "googled").
Current state of affairs is like the Barbary Pirate war of the early 1800's who were ultimately defeated. Free commerce between nations is the lubricant that makes the world go 'round now, (arguably more so) as it did 2 centuries ago. If sailing ships can defeat the pirates, so too can modern navies, with spy satellites, patrol planes, and helicopters that weren't available in the 1800's. For now, a  to the Indian Navy.

Couldn't believe that that large liner outraced a smaller speedboat last week.
I say arm those ships to blow the pirates out of the water. That ought to stop those Barbarians.

I don't think one wants to arm the ships. No sense in escalating things with passenger liners and oil tankers.
But there should be destroyers out there that can quickly run interference with any attacks.
It'll be another nation that comes to the rescue these days as the US is impeded by political correctness and anti-war these days.
The Indians rule the seas!

Russia and China are already 'volunteering' their navies ! Although I wasn't really aware that 'Pirates of the Caribbean' needed to be taken seriously LOL !!!
But all it really takes to repel these pirate boats is a couple of 20mm 'helicopter guns' shooting downwards from the top deck of the ship they are approaching ... instant Swiss Cheese. And a couple of 40mm guns or even RPG launchers could trash their 'mother ship' as well.

And who would have thought prior to 911 that a dozen or so guys armed with boxcutters could dramatically damage, and alter the course of a nation just as surely as a major carrier battle group did six decades prior. The number of ships comandeered by the pirates is hardly a flea bite on the totality of maritime global commerce, yet it is already causing several shippers to take the long route around Cape Horn. Yet the "cost to them" vs reward extracted by them ratio is very favorable.( to the pirates).
Equipping each and every (or a significant number) of cargo/tanker ships with armament in the right places, with properly trained crewmembers is likewise costly compared to a few mother ships & pirate skiffs.
Even with a much wider recon net vs the 1800's, "the sea is so huge, the tiny dots are so small,& there are so many of them" is exploited by the pirates.
Unaddressed, the "POTC" gang can have a larger effect on commerce.

^^^ the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' comment was actually a tongue in cheeker regarding the Russian Navy now sailing between Venezuela and Cuba i.e. that the Gulf of Mexico is no longer an 'American Lake'.
Re: Indian Navy: 3 Repulsed Pirate Attacks In Last Month
The pirates have just gotten bolder, and it's a big problem now. And with a non-existent government not able to do a thing, they just get worse and worse. The only thing stopping them is force. I'm not saying arm the tankers to the gills, but give them some defense to slow things down until the forces get there. So put a couple of cannon on the ships to blow a few out of the water, or at least scare them, and the rest of those creeps will be lots more cautious about their attacks.

You see, any time a country becomes an anarchy, you have the destructive, criminal elements that are let loose to prey on the more stable and successful elements in that previous society, and any other society they can get to. You could even have genocides due to past unresolved conflicts. That's why it is other countries' interests to intercede when another one breaks up. Question is do you intercede before or after it becomes an anarchy?
Iraq wasn't anywhere near an anarchy until the US toppled its government and Rumsfeld just didn't give a thought to it (he glibly said Iraq now is free and that's what they want and Bush bought it; they are both culpable for causing an anarchy; try them in the World Court). Yugoslavia became that after strongman Tito died without leaving an equivalent progeny. Afghanistan was decimated by the USSR and wasn't strong enough to rebuild itself. I'm not sure about most of the imploded African countries (need to do some reading on it).
The world needs to learn some lessons from this. But they won't.

you just take one of these ...
and mount it like this ...
with a little bit of personal weapons training that any girl can handle ...
