Seeing a stripper in civilian life
I thought of posting this in "OTC" but it has nothing to do withthe "Holy Grail" ... Anyone had this experience?
Friday, December 12, 2008, 3:30-5:00 p.m.: A cosmically freakish occurence that nearly tore my many clever and delicately constructed worlds asunder. No lie. I was at a high school sports event to watch my daughter play. As I glanced around the stands, I caught my eye on a rather striking blonde. Nothing new there, but this one reminded me of someone I used to know. Her hair, her profile, her slight overbite, her way of chewing gum, all reminded me of ... Gina, my old ATF. Damn, it's amazing, I thought. Looks just like her. I kept craning my neck over her way at every opportunity, at first still just marveling at the resemblance to my old ATF, and then... holy shit. It can't be her. It just can't be! According to my information, Gina had quit stripping (except for the occasional return engagement at Club M.) and moved to a distant state. (This, of course, was fine with me, dear reader, as I am still under the apprehension that Gina still takes a rather jaundiced view of my blogging about her when she discovered it last year, and in fact was hostile and downright threatening when I innocently texted her last July just after seeing her back in the club in Lucite heels.) I looked over again. It is her. Then it began to make sense: I knew she grew up in the town whose high school team was visiting for this game, and she still had a niece or whatever still in school. She was sitting there in the stands with the girl's parents (presumably). It was like worlds colliding. Then there was the moment of total cataclysm when Gina stood up and walked right past me as I sat in the bleachers alongside fellow parents, high school kids, friends, and my ex-wife. Eye contact? Noo; oddly enough, at that moment I became preoccupied with some schmutz on my shoelaces. I don't even know if she recognized me. Later, a little investigation confirmed that I was not hallucinating: Gina had been on the dancer schedule at Club M. every day that week. She was obviously back in town to see family and earn a few bucks the good old way.

Re: Seeing a stripper in civilian life
Yep, we're actually human and not sexualized she-bots. What a concept.
-
Re: Seeing a stripper in civilian life
Well, the "she-bot" perception is valid most of the time to be sure, but not in this case. I was actually writing about a genuinely awkward encounter that just happened to be OTC and in a context I was unprepared for -- and it was genuinely awkward simply because the particular stripper and I had had a long intimate history that turned sour at the end. That's all.
-
Re: Seeing a stripper in civilian life
It doesn't sound like she recognized you. Probably because customers don't look the same in broad daylight and without money in our hands. Either that or she just plain ignored you based on that sour ending that you spoke of.
I've run into a few dancers I knew in public, mostly on malls and once on a beach. Fortunately I have never gotten one mad at me so it was not awkward.

Re: Seeing a stripper in civilian life
Why awkward?
I've bumped into a call girl I use to know at the supermarket. A polite exchange of eye contact to acknowledge each others existence and no further comment made.
Professionals and people with common sense can figure out how to act in situations where it is mutually beneficial to protect each other's anonymity.
The only time its a problem is when either or both is operating with less than a clue. That's always a possibility but that punch is usually telegraphed with enough time to duck if you have to.

Lol, About fifteen years ago I was walking into a night club in Boston with my wife on the way to her company holiday party. As we approached the main entrance I could clearly see a street walker that I was a regular with standing right in front of the doorway working the area. We walked past, she looked straight ahead. The next time I saw her we a had a good laugh about the whole thing. Women in the sex industry seldom wish to call attention to themselves. Those that do are the ones to stay away from.

Re: Seeing a stripper in civilian life
I was rip roaring drunk one night at a bar in my home town 20 years ago. I walked around a corner and was face to face with the house mom (gorgeous girl) from my friend's club 250 miles away. We looked at each other, had an "oh shit" moment, and then passed on by. We had a good laugh when I saw her back at her club with my friend.

Re: Seeing a stripper in civilian life
I have for a number of years socialized every few weeks with a couple of dancers when they're not working. I have never, ever told anyone outside of the industry how these girls earn a living.
On rare occasions, when in company with them, I've bumped into some of my more conventional friends. I do sometimes wonder how they'd react if they ever found out they'd been talking to a dancer and had been blissfully unaware of it.

This is precisely how one of my regulars and I handled it when we ran into eachother in the grocery store one night. Both of us let the other know we saw the other and that was it. No awkwardness or anything. But he knows (and respects the fact) that I don't advertise what I do for a living.
Chances are you're going to run into a dancer you know if you're from the same town. It shouldn't really be a big deal.

This might be rare. I live in the London (UK) area. Say 8 million people living in the city, and 2,000(?) dancers. That's makes dancers only 1 in 4,000 of the population. Add in the complication that you've got to be in close proximity to them at a specific time - and that you've got to recognize them in 'civilian' make up.
I'd say the odds are fairly long.

Ok. It sounded to me like you were talking about a much smaller place than London.

Re: Seeing a stripper in civilian life
Contrary to popular belief, dancers do not room and board at the clubs they work in. They have lives outside the club just like customers do and odds are their world's will collide in public eventually. It's really not all that uncommon.
I agree with http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u...htningball.gif's statement regarding dancers not wishing to call attention to themselves. Like other people in the entertainment industry, I believe their overall desire is to stay as anonymous as possible while in public.
I've crossed paths with dancers in public on numerous occasions. I have never been the one to initiate acknowledgment of them. Sometimes, they'll say hi and exchange pleasantries. Most of the time, it has occurred while I was alone which I find considerate on their part so as not to create any awkward situations if I'm with company. If both parties ignored each other, I don't make mention of the chance meeting the next time I see them in the club. If someone wants to keep their personal life private, it should stay private. It's just a simple case of respect.

I'm going to disagree there - and give a practical illustration of why.
I live maybe a 10 minute drive from one venue. Many of the girls that work that venue come up by train and get a taxi from the station to the venue. As the station is close to the route I take home (and I'm passing the station about the right time) there are a number of girls who will text me and see if I can give them a lift to avoid the cost of the taxi.
There might be another couple of girls that I know casually who are working on the same shift and who are coming up by train, yet I've never (in 5 years) bumped into anyone other than the girl I've come to pick up. And that's despite being in the right place at the right time.

Re: Seeing a stripper in civilian life
^^^ I guess I wasn't really clear with what I was trying to say. I was only referring to the idea that random customers run into random dancers all the time in public. I wasn't trying to say that it was likely a specific customer would run into a specific dancer.

Re: Seeing a stripper in civilian life
I bumped eyes with an easily-recognizable dancer in a supermarket; neither of us made any outward sign of recognition.
I was in a restaurant sharing a meal with a dancer friend (we had 'been together' a few times) when my boss and his wife came in; fortunately he was not a club-goer.

NOOOO! You are ruining my fantasy. I wanna think that the dancers live upstairs from the club, sleep all day, have naked pillowfights, and paint their toenails. Please don't say that they have lives outside the club just like customers. ;D;D
-
Re: Seeing a stripper in civilian life
Nooo, bsteve, we don't have naked pillowfights and sleep all day. We have pillowfights in lingerie. The naked comes after that, when we all masturbate thinking of all the incredibly attractive men who visit us at night! Every single one of you gets at least five minutes of diddle time. We have a roster and everything....
Seriously, though, it happens, as long as everybody is suitably discreet for the situation, it works out fine.

Re: Seeing a stripper in civilian life
I ran into one of my kinda-sorta regulars at a gas station once. He was a nice guy, and I think I was his ATF, but he liked to get dances with a variety of girls.
Well, I was walking out and he was walking in. I smiled and waved and he just looked shocked. Of course, I was wearing sweatpants, an oversized stained T-shirt, flip flops and my hair in a ratty pony-tail, no makeup and to top it off - a candy-bar shoved into my gaping maw.
I figured he was finished getting dances with me, but after that he seemed to like me a little more for some odd reason. :)

Re: Seeing a stripper in civilian life
Heh,
Walking downtown I hear a feminine voice shout out my name. I turn to see a dancer I know waving out of an apartment window. She becons me over and introduces me to her boyfriend as a guy who has bought dances from her.
Walking into a bar I frequent I notice at a nearby table several dancers from my club. They notice me, drag me over to their table, buy me drinks and dinner while asking me to reveal dirty little secrets about their co-workers.
Make eye to eye contact with a dancer who hates me, while walking thru the mall with a female friend. Dancer does nothing to indicate we know each other and never speaks to me about it in the club.
Walking downtown I pass a couple and realize the girl is a dancer I know, no reaction or response from her. We just pass each other.
Walking thru a bookstore, I notice a one time favorite dancer with a male companion. She walks up to me with a sly smile and asks me if I like the purse of a nearby female customer and then walks away. Baffled I watch her walk away, guy in tow. We have never discussed it in the club. Bizzare
While at a Salsa dance club a dancer I know appears right infront of me and asks me to dance with a big smile. We dance and chat, relaxed and friendly. Then off to other dance partners. We dance at least once every time we see each other at the Salsa club.

Re: Seeing a stripper in civilian life
To be honest I probable wouldn't recognize a dancer I hadn't had dinner with and slept with more then once. Hell I didn't even recognize the mother of one of my children; I only had sex with her once and no dinner. ::)

Re: Seeing a stripper in civilian life
This just happened to me for the first time....There is this really cute sexy dancer at my fav club and we have talked to each other but I've never gotten a dance from her, but we like to talk when I'm at the club... I travel a lot to different crazy places so she always like to hear where have I been lately....anyhow... a couple of married couple friends invite me for lunch on sunday after been away from town for 5 weeks...and after lunch they decide that they want us all to take their kids to a nearby park...I'm into photography, so they ask me if I have mny equipment with me and that if I could take a few photos of the children while we are at the park, so I do...while taking some shots, I see this pretty lady and thinks she looks cute with a little boy...my friends (the guys) start telling me that this cute girl is looking a lot towards me...so I pay more attention and recognize her, she turns around, smiles and waves at me... I smile and wave back.... then after a while a get close to see how she reacts and say Hi, and we strike a conversation....ended up getting her number and yesterday took her out to a take a coffee cup and chat....and we hit it off... she is a single mom and still dances, but she wanted me to know her outside the club, specially because we've never been dancer-customer in a way....I'll see her again on friday, so my encounter was a really good one...

Re: Seeing a stripper in civilian life
I have had many many instances of seeing my staff outside of the club and it has only been an interesting interaction once. My first club was mostly staffed by college girls and at the beginning of a semester my ex-fiance (also a dancer) and I went shopping and as we are standing in line, we notice that one of my girls is directly in front of us with her parents. Roughly the same time we notice her, she turned to say something to one of them and noticed us. I chose to ignore her and act as if I didn't know her so there wouldn't be any uncomfortable explanations about how she (18 ) knows me (20 something). My oh so bright ex doesn't think that far ahead and just strikes up a conversation. Thankfully the conversation was completely innocuous, and the young lady was able to play off that she and my ex were in a class together, but I was dreading having to cover that up, or worse yet tell the truth.
