Ignore the doom an gloom, 2009 is going to be great!
Job losses = entrepreneurship
The fall of giants = the rise of the rest
Have the gazillionaires learned their lessons yet? For the moment. They now know that they can't remain gazillionaires unless there are consumers with money to maintain business. Take away the money from the consumer and the entire system collapses.
It'll be forgotten in a couple of generations, just like it always is. We forgot about what caused the problems in 1929 and we will probably be looking at a very similar situation in 2089. Not that I plan on being around to see 2089, but who knows?
For anyone who is feeling ambitious today, there is a lot opportunity to be had. Life does not exist in a vacuum. With the end of so many big businesses, people will turn to small local businesses to fulfill needs once met by those corporate giants. Don't look for the disappearance of Wal Mart anytime soon, but the landscape will be much more diverse and regional differences will be apparent.
Call me evil or sadistic or call it schadenfreude, but I'm glad to see the collaspe of Wall street. I giggle when I hear of usury banks collasping. Madoff may have been actually criminal, but what he did was no worse than stealing the life savings of grandmothers via predatory lending (which also happened to be legal!).
We are a nation of laws. This is a beautiful thing, to be sure. Since we all respect the law a military coup is no longer necessary to change the way our nation is governed, all that is necessary is to get out and vote. Once again Americans have proen their mettle and voted for a new government. Our people may not agree with what is going on in San Francisco or Houston, but since our people are of such a transient nature we aren't going to launch a military offensive against any internal state or city. Even if you completely disagree with a way a city is governing itself, you probably know someone that lives in that region and don't want to start a civil war. This is poetry in motion. This is what that Russian professor doesn't get: We like to argue. We don't like violence. Hence, we will remain one nation united.

^^^ agreed, but for entirely different reasons i.e. my 2009 'foreign' earnings being exempt from the IRS !!!

You can say that again !!! The regional differences between say California / New York / Michigan and South Carolina / Texas / Alabama will be even more striking. Of course this circles back to the Russian Professor's prediction if and when the businesses and residents of South Carolina / Texas / Alabama are forced to help 'finance' spending excesses by California / New York / Michigan !!!
Re: Ignore the doom an gloom, 2009 is going to be great!
Yes! 2009 is going to be great!
A consumer with a vote is a powerful person.
Re: Ignore the doom an gloom, 2009 is going to be great!
^^^ yes but a broke consumer who voted for government 'help' in 2008 that is never actuallly delivered in 2009 is a DANGEROUS person !

I hope you are right Paris. Otherwise FBR will be driving an Aveo instead of an Escalade and living in a trailer with a dial up connection (if I am lucky).

Governments that don't deliver is a risk of democracy...just ask the people who voted republican in the last two elections.
What do you think those disappointed broke consumer Obama loving voters are going to do? Invade another country? LOL

no, but it's distinctly possible that they may invade another COUNTY ... i.e. the 'rich' suburb adjacent to the impoverished and broke large city !

Instead of just fixing bridges and failed companies with bailouts, let's fix energy independence and retrain for 21st Century jobs. There's plenty of useful work for everyone to do.

That would be fabulous and I am all for it. The Left would have to turn on itself though. The biggest obstacle to energy independence is the environmental protection lobby.

I believe you're referring to offshore drilling. And maybe building another refinery.
As oilman T Boone Pickens himself says, "we can't drill ourselves out of this one."

Nope I am refering to the whole environmental protection lobby. Yucca mountain, the no building solar plants in the desert, no windmills off marthas vinyard, no new power lines in Cali. The whole schmeel. The clean energy crowd and the environmental protection crowd have to come to terms and the Left traditionally lays claim to both. So when they get done eating their young we will see.
Re: Ignore the doom an gloom, 2009 is going to be great!
A lot of the environmental protection interests are strictly asthetic (not in my backyard, etc). And a lot are for more rational reasons, such as avoiding oil spills, killing off whole environmental systems, etc.
