'Voting with my Feet' tomorrow ...
... for anybody who is remotely interested, and who doesn't know already, as of tomorrow I am heading to the airport for a 'one way' trip well south of the border. Yes I am joining a growing group of American 'expatriates' who are now choosing to live abroad in an effort to legally minimize their tax liabilities and significantly reduce their 'cost of living'. Under IRS rules, in order to qualify for the 'foreign income' tax exemption, American citizens cannot spend more than 35 days per year within US borders ... so in order to leave the door open for a couple of 'return vacations' later in the year I'm outa here now !
Besides, I do not want to risk the possibility that the new congress / president will quickly enact new laws which could make expatriation more difficult and/or more expensive. A new 'capital' tax has already been proposed, i.e. the charging of a new 15-20% tax on ALL assets which Americans are relocating outside US borders.
Once I get 'established' in my new 'tax' home, I plan on staying somewhat active on SW. However, as I have a very large number of issues to deal with as soon as I arrive in my new 'tax' home, I may not be posting much over the next few weeks.
To every middle class American who is 'staying behind', all I can say is 'good luck' - you're going to need it !
Re: 'Voting with my Feet' tomorrow ...
I think you're going to need the luck more.
Re: 'Voting with my Feet' tomorrow ...
I know why you voted differently on the ballot than you are with your feet, but it still boggles my mind a bit.
Anyway, good luck with the move and with settling in. I hope it all works out for you.
Re: 'Voting with my Feet' tomorrow ...
Well all I can say is I wish you luck. I hope you have spent sometime in the country you are moving to and are very familiar with its economic climate. From someone that has lived overseas before, all I can say is have fun, but remember there are going to be bad times as well as good.
P.S If you move somewhere tropical with gorgeous men...I want pictures;D
Once again good luck with your choice sweetie.
Re: 'Voting with my Feet' tomorrow ...
It's ironic that, had you grown up and lived your whole life in Bumblefuck Central America, you'd right now probably be one of the millions world-wide wishing for a sliver of a chance to be a citizen of the United States of America.
You are doing what you want to do Mel, and that is a good thing by any measure.
Re: 'Voting with my Feet' tomorrow ...
--> last check-in before heading for the airport <--
thanks everyone !
PS after just seeing Obama's trillion dollar bailout press conference, complete with broke blue city mayors standing in line with their hands outstretched, I'm more certain than ever that I'm making the right decision !
Re: 'Voting with my Feet' tomorrow ...
Well, we could use your tax dollars about now Mel but I hope it works out for you.

I was offline yesterday. Good luck Mel and I look forward to hearing about your adventures from the other side (of the equator).
