BEST alternative to french fries. EVAR.
I am trying to cook more now, as I am on a diet (or lifestyle change I suppose, ugh) and I figure that a lack of variety really throws me off.
I was craving fries the other day. Sweet potato fries are good, but they are carb-a-licious. So I was looking for alternative recipes when I came across this:

holy shit, YUM. they taste JUST like sweet potato fries. just make sure you slice them thinly enough and cook them long enough. sooooo good!
I love healthy food alternatives to unhealthy food. what are yours?
Re: BEST alternative to french fries. EVAR.
Cool, I'll have to try this! Thanks!
Re: BEST alternative to french fries. EVAR.
uh, sweet potatoes are not 'carbolicious'. and anyway, carbs are not all created equal, and given enough physical activity (more than zero), kinda seriously freaking important to a healthy diet.
also, you could make yam fries, which in flavor terms combine carrots and sweet potatoes, while having a carrot-like carb profile, but with broader nutritive value than carrots.
complex carbs are your friend, and sweet potatoes and yams are in the complex category. as well claim that pasta is 'unhealthy' (hint-- it's not, either).

I should clarify then - I do eat carbs, I just prefer to get mine in whole wheat bread, pasta, etc. I try to limit my intake (I am addicted to carbs!!) where I can. This was one of the ways I could find an alternative. Sorry to offend...
Re: BEST alternative to french fries. EVAR.
i quite like sweet potatoes and yams (health and cultural reasons) and both really are better than white/red potatoes or rice if you are worried about carbs because they offer other nutritive benefits with their carbs.
Re: BEST alternative to french fries. EVAR.
Nasoya instead of regular mayonnaise.
Earth Balance instead of butter.
Kale chips instead of potato chips.
Re: BEST alternative to french fries. EVAR.
^^^ I like Vegenaise. :) it's sooo good. and I second Earth Balance!
Re: BEST alternative to french fries. EVAR.
When I make a pitcher of flavoraid (hehe Im poor at the moment) I use apple juice to sweeten instead of sugar. I also use raw sugar to sweeten my coffee. I pretty much can't stand the taste of regular granulated sugar anymore.
Re: BEST alternative to french fries. EVAR.
wow. ^^ never thought about any of those alternatives. we should really keep this thread goin.
Re: BEST alternative to french fries. EVAR.
don't forget turkey instead of ground beef.. for meatballs, spaghetti, and burgers!
Re: BEST alternative to french fries. EVAR.
oooh I love turkey chili!
applesauce instead of ummmm...actually, I'm not sure. but look up applesauce cookies/muffins/etc.
Re: BEST alternative to french fries. EVAR.
^^ Applesauce in place of oil for baking. ;) Can't even tell a difference!
Re: BEST alternative to french fries. EVAR.

Try eating a few (complex)carbs in the morning!! (Not being snarky - your brain just needs them to function :) Trust me!)

Re: BEST alternative to french fries. EVAR.
oh, I forgot this one -
agave nectar instead of honey. it has a lower GI index and less calories. it is also much sweeter!
Re: BEST alternative to french fries. EVAR.
ooh, thanks for that one!
I have been drinking apple cidar vinegar, I actually like the taste, but I tend to drink it slower if it's sweet.. great idea to put agave instead of honey..
yay.
Re: BEST alternative to french fries. EVAR.
If I'm juicing, or eating very lightly, I take a fiber pill or two to make me feel full. It doesn't make me go to the bathroom or anything, just gives me a full feeling. Also, I read a real a long time ago that fennel is a great appetite suppressant, but I wasn't really able to take the taste (kind of like strong licorice even though it looks like green onion). The few times I did eat it, it definitely took away any hunger pangs and it is easy to use, just dice it up in your salad.
Re: BEST alternative to french fries. EVAR.
mmm...I love licorice. Dicing fennel in salad sounds delicious!
I second (or third..fourth?) the Agave Nectar. Bit pricey but sooo yummy!
I use almond butter in place of peanut butter. Better health benefits. Also all-natural no-suger-added preserves on light whole-grain bread (a low-cal, super-healthy adult PB&J (AB&J?).
oh, and SHIRATAKI noodles in place of regular noodles, and spaghetti squash with tomato sauce in place of spaghetti. So good!
