OMG! OMG! Really disturbing!! Warning!!
So my ex-boyfriend told me that he joined a group on face book for "People against using LIVE dogs and cats for shark bait" on facebook. Apparently, there's an alarming trend of people (usually Americans) going to South America (Venezuela specifically although probably Costa Rica as well) and using live cats and dogs as bait for sharks.
I am a total animal lover and was truly disturbed by this, he told me there was a picture of a Golden Retriver with a hook through it's mouth swimming behind a boat online. I couldn't bear to watch it but couldn't get the image out of my mind for days.
Then today I logged on to my facebook and was confronted with this image (which is apparently on his page- I haven't really figured facebook out yet)
I am completely nauseated by this but want to raise awareness about this so am posting it here. Sorry that's it such a sad picture.
I'm going to hug my dog now until he gets annoyed.

It's still sad as hell, I know there's worse problems in the world (esp down there) but fuck! It makes me really sick!

Re: OMG! OMG! Really disturbing!! Warning!!
Thats horrible. Getting eaten by sharks is probably the worst part of it though, not the hook.

Re: OMG! OMG! Really disturbing!! Warning!!
Here is an old thread from back in 2005 which discusses this topic ...
http://forum.stripperweb.com/showthread.php?t=54025
Here are a couple of snips from the Snopes piece I posted above ...
"... that the dogs used are generally dead animals picked up from roadsides or pulled from the island's large population of unwanted strays (estimated at 150,000), and that the no-longer-alive animals are attached to unattended buoyed "shark trap" platforms rather than dragged alive behind
boats.
The French embassy in Washington, D.C., has also maintained that although the practice is not unknown, its occurrence and acceptance is not nearly as prevalent as recent news reports would make it seem ...
The photo displayed at the head of this page, which has adorned several news articles and humane society-related web pages on this topic, is a frame from a 2005 video produced by the 30 Million Friends Foundation. The video purportedly documents the case of a dog that had escaped from fishermen who planned to use it as shark bait; skeptics have questioned the authenticity of the video, maintaining that it merely shows the aftermath of an accidental entanglement that has been mistakenly or deceptively misused for publicity's sake."
While animal abuse is sick and disgusting, and the article does say "generally" dead not "always" dead (which is disturbing), I'm not sure if this is a wide spread as some groups try to make it.
Also different cultures do have different moral standards, and while we might not approve, there are some cultures who do eat meat from dogs, cats, horses, etc.

Re: OMG! OMG! Really disturbing!! Warning!!
Maybe in 2005 they were using dead animals but sharks don't eat dead animals they eat alive or wounded animals and the people that started the group LIVE in Venezuela and surely know more about the situation than a Snopes article.
The dog in the video (that I can not watch) is alive,. And possibly the worst part of it, to me is that it's Americans doing this for Sport, not commercial fisherman.
Just like when American buisnessmen go to Thailand and get child prostitutes. They would NEVER do that here out of fear of repurcussions- but it's OK to do it there because of a dysfunctional political system. These assholes probably have pet dogs in their yards at home

Re: OMG! OMG! Really disturbing!! Warning!!
Fair enough. I just found it odd that the same picture and video you described was part of the 2005 campaign.
I certainly would not condone the act, but just wanted to be sure that people had the available information out there so that they could make a fair and balanced determination.
Btw - I love my dog, and would never participate in this kind of activity or want this for her either.

Re: OMG! OMG! Really disturbing!! Warning!!
I don't doubt that at all, propaganda is propaganda- which ever side of the fence you sit on. I just know a lot of people on SW are pet lovers and the only way to bring attention to anything is to raise awareness- which is why I started the thread on a website that has nothing to do with animals. So sad- still reeling.

Re: OMG! OMG! Really disturbing!! Warning!!
Here is another site which claims the story is true,
http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors...-sharkbait.htm
It sites a National Geographic article from 2005.
Also it states that "... in September of 2005, the government of Réunion responded to the outcries by passing into law a bill that would make it illegal for fishing boats to carry any dogs or cats, alive or dead. Shortly after the law was enacted the article said "the first court case was held involving a person charged with using live dogs as bait. Authorities had found a seven-month-old puppy on John Claude Clain's property in July with three fishing hooks in its paws and snout." This resulted in a 5000 euro fine for Clain."
Hopefully the authorities are continuing to address the situation, but perhaps the group you are referring to feels that the practice has not been fully addressed. I'd be interested to see if there are more recently documented cases. I'm going to poke around and will report back if I find any.

Agreed. Eveything I've read on it does appear to affirm the story. While the referenced stories may seem at bit dated (2005), I can certainly appreciate how unwanted activities tend to return once the media coverage has passed and the public awareness goes away. Hopefully by people keeping the issue alive, it is causing the local authorities to keep policing these activities.

Re: OMG! OMG! Really disturbing!! Warning!!
Isn't the torture and killing of animals a way that Jr. serial killers get started? If Americans are participating in this kind of activity, I'd be very, very interested in who they are and where they live.

Re: OMG! OMG! Really disturbing!! Warning!!
Sharks eat dead animals. Sharks will eat anything, really. You can find all kinds of crap in a shark's stomach. I've gone shark fishing....you don't use live bait.
-
Re: OMG! OMG! Really disturbing!! Warning!!
Yeah sharks eat flesh. Dead or alive..whatever fits in their mouth. Esp if its freshly dead enough to leave a scent of blood in the water. I've seen plenty of shark feedings and shark cage type things...they never use live bait..always chum.
That said...I dont doubt this is true. I dont know how prevalent it is...but IMO even one animal subjected to a horror like this is too many.
I'll look up that facebook group too...thanks

Re: OMG! OMG! Really disturbing!! Warning!!
Dogs and cats in fact no land animals are on a sharks menu so they would not make good bate. Now if it was said that live seals were being hooked and dragged as shark bate that would be more believable but not as dramatic as saying dogs and cats.
The best shark bate is and will remain a fish.

Re: OMG! OMG! Really disturbing!! Warning!!
Fanatics believing what they will believe.

This story has some truth to it; from back in 2005 on a French controlled African island. A few fisherman were caught using stray dogs for bait; the island had a runaway population of 150,000 strays. The French government tried and convicted them for animal cruelty.
The dog with the hooks was someone's pet and he was returned to his owner and the perpetrator was convicted according to this National Geographic report from 2005.
So the stories of this now happening in South America are most likely a forward this e-mail to everyone you know scam.

Re: OMG! OMG! Really disturbing!! Warning!!
In my opinion anyone who kills animals this way deserve to die themselves. They are worthless pieces of human garbage and we should feed all of them to sharks. If anyone killed my dog or cat intentionally, I'd have a contract out on his life. I'm not kidding. I love my animals more than most people and would save an animal before I would most people.

I'm not sure why you would bring up gun control, but I have no problems with law abiding citizens having guns for self defense. I do support the Brady Bill with the waiting periods.

Where did you get that.
Certainly sharks will attack and eat live prey but they are also carion feeders and will eat dead meat.

Re: OMG! OMG! Really disturbing!! Warning!!
I dunno I just had a picture in my head of someone throwing a roten carcas (sp?) in the water.
But I do know this is not an email scam as no one asks anyone to email it and no one is asking for money.
Also, that dog may have been returned to it's owner but there is a video as well of it- the very same dog- doggie-paddling behind the boat because the fucks video-taped themselves using the dog as shark bait. It was not found running around entangled in fishing wire or wandering the streets of Venezuela with the hooks attached. This is really happening, it is not an urban legend or a hoax and again I repeat the only reason I started this thread is to raise awareness.

Yes that dog was used in that manner; in Africa in 2005.

What is NOT true is your statement "Apparently, there's an alarming trend of people (usually Americans) going to South America (Venezuela specifically although probably Costa Rica as well) and using live cats and dogs as bait for sharks" There is a bunch of crap happening in Venezuela but that dog is not one of them.
You have proof positive that the picture posted is a lie in the context of AMERICANS presently going to South America trolling with live dogs. The only trolling going on is by the Facebook clowns.
