Question for the dancers - when you stop dancing, will you have met your objectives?
OK - a question and a poll (anonymous of course).
I know that some dancers dance for very specific objectives - for example to fund their education, or to start up their own business.
So my question is:
(a) Do you have any objectives to achieve from your dancing career?
(b) Will you have met those objectives when you retire?
So how you will feel about your dancing career 10 years from now?
Phil.
Re: Question for the dancers - when you stop dancing, will you have met your objectiv
After about 12 years in the business I pretty much achieved everything I set out to do ...
- quickly paid off the debts I 'inherited' as a result of a divorce
- purchased and totally remodeled my Grandmother's house in upstate NY
- sent my son through 4 years at a private college ( not quite finished with degree but paid for)
- purchased several 'nice' cars and virtually anything else I really wanted in the way of 'durable goods'
(like a greenhouse, all new appliances, a programmable sewing machine)
- set aside enough savings / investments to allow me to retire 20+ years before I'll become eligible for Social Security
Granted that in order to achieve the last item I've recently chosen to take a 'permanent vacation' south of the border in order to minimize my cost of living and US federal / NY state tax burden on my investment income.

Melonie is incredible, what an inspiration!
I think I met my objectives, and there were several:
When I first started, it was to pay off college debts and save for a summer trip to Europe. Check.
I went back a few times between jobs to ensure I still had income and savings to get me by. Check.
I danced through graduate school so that I could attend school full-time and graduate in less than three years. Check.
Then I stripped to start and maintain funds for a start-up business. Check.
I never thought I'd do it for retirement income, although of course I certainly wish I worked more and saved more.

I'm not stopping until I've done it!
Unfortunately I started a couple of months ago just as things were slowing down for summer but I can see it starting to pick up so I'm staying put.
I hope to still be doing it when we get to the other side of the recession and get a glimpse of what 'the good old days' used to be like.
I need to:
Pay off debts incurred renovating my house
Finish my house so I can rent it out and in turn rent somewhere I want to be
Swap my poor old clapped out car for something else
Get some savings
I would like to:
get a deposit for another property to rent
start saving to pay off my mortgage
have a holiday
