Dancing and day jobs
So, I work an on call day job as well as dance part time.
I love what I do, and am working towards not having to dance (although I DO love dancing). I make dancer money on the days I work, it's just inconsistent. It's also kind of high profile/works with people in the public eye, so I can't tell them what I really do when they ask.
I dance to save money, and to fill in the gaps when I'm not working a lot. However, I'm trying to decide what to tell the custies when they ask what else I do. I've actually had them tell me that if I have a day job, I must not need the money from dancing. (Time waster alert, but still...)
What I'm asking is what would your answer be? Currently, I tell them a modified version of what I really do. I feel like I should tell them something completely different from the reality though. I've run into people that I know my co-workers, but not me and it's starting to freak me out.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

Re: Dancing and day jobs
you don't have to tell them anything some people do *gasp* dance for a living. Tell them you are a day time dog walker

Could always say you're a student. That's a simple answer that wouldn't raise suspicions.

Re: Dancing and day jobs
Yes, some of my good friends dance full time, and also have masters degrees. If I wasn't trying hard to get the career path off the ground, I'd totally dance full time.
I tend to be more of a "make my money talking" than by doing lots of dances type of girl. It comes up in the conversation A LOT. I get the "you're so smart, why are you doing this, you have to have a day job, etc" at least 10 times a shift.
Also, my schedule gets in the way of my dancing a lot, and since I email my clients/regulars to get them in the club, I like to be able to not sound totally flaky when I can't make it in for 2 or 3 weeks.
I think it's hilarious that I've been dancing almost 2 years and still can't figure out a believable answer for this.

Re: Dancing and day jobs
I say I work in sales at a bridal shop. If they ask where I say "sorry honey I can't tell you where because if the brides find out I did the bachelor party I'm going to be in a whole lot of trouble. Brides are scary." Its simmilar to what I really do so I can have normal conversations with out totaly making up Bs, men won't go there, and it usualy makes them laugh and move on to another topic.
My friend Candy "works" at an obgyn office.

I'll say Im a part time secretary or that I dance full time. I get tired of them asking...

Re: Dancing and day jobs
I tell them I'm a student--which I am--but I lie about which university I go to and my major.

Re: Dancing and day jobs
Is there some kind of freelance job you could say you have? One that is really inconsistent so you need the money you get from dancing? Or you intern and you are a student? That would also explain not being able to make it to work (big exams, too much on your plate) but needing $$$ because most internships don't pay.
I prefer to direct the conversation away from stuff like this or just pick the easiest possible explanation (student).

Re: Dancing and day jobs
I tell customers I volunteer and they love it! It's actually true. I volunteer in animal shelters and with animal rescue groups. But they are always shocked that a stripper would do something good. And I also have a degree and talk a lot so get the "you are so smart" crap. If they really probe I say I'm a night person and don't handle stress very well so dancing is a better fit for money making and I get my mental stimulation from volunteer work.

Re: Dancing and day jobs
It depends. In case I'm caught of guard with the question, I either say I'm a student or I tell them about a previous job. For example, right now, I work for a cell phone company but I used to work at a coffee house as a barista. So when asked, I tell people I work at a coffee house. I haven't run into to a guy who wanted to have a conversation about lattes! ;) Or I also say I'm a student.
