Re: jokes to tell customers
I actually share things from the "Overheard in the Dressing Room" thread of SW... it always gets them laughing.
Re: jokes to tell customers
I have been trying to teach myself smalltalk to ages. It just doesn't come naturally to me. Watching people who are good at it helps, you can learn from them. If you're not a naturally funny person then jokes might come off contrived or nervous.
I like the asking-questions-about-the-other-person thing: it makes the other person feel like you're interested in them, you maintain an air of mystery if you want, or divulge as much of yourself as comes up in the course of conversation, and as a plus it works well on drunk people when you can't be bothered holding conversation anyway.
The "40 Year Old Virgin" example:
shop assistant: Can I help you?
Andy: I don't know. Can you?
Shop assistant: Are you looking for something?
Andy: Is there something I should be looking for?
Shop assistant: [Laughs] We have a lot of books. So, maybe it depends
on what you like.
Andy: What do you like?
Shop assistant: We have a great section of...do-it-yourself.
Andy: Do you like to "do it yourself"?
Shop assistant: Sometimes. I mean...if the mood strikes...
Andy: How is the mood striking you now?
That method is magic!

yeah its true. if you dont naturally have a strong sense of humour try to find other ways to entertain custys that are suited to your personality. if you do, it should come naturally. i used to come up with a few comebacks in my head but never had the balls to say it.
