What do you think about censorship?
I am in China right now, tried looking up porn and couldn't find any. Turns out pornography is completely and utterly banned in every form (unless you find it on the black market). Youtube is banned, Twitter is banned, Myspace is banned (they have a Chinese version), and we all know Google is going through some shit. I tried looking up some more info but "censorship" searches are banned too- any links that look interesting lead to "Problems Loading Page."
I'm not super angry- maybe frustrated- but not sure how I feel. What do you think about censorship, in general? What are the consequences?
"The People's Republic of China has banned porn since its establishment in 1949. Anyone who produces, distributes, or purchases lewd magazines, books, or videos can be penalized. Usually the punishment is just a fine and a warning, but in 2005 the creator of China's biggest porn site was sentenced to life in prison. Movie studios or filmmakers caught producing erotic films can lose permission to make movies altogether."
China Arrests 5,394 People in Internet Porn Sweep:
Is All Pornography Banned in China?
China Bans YOUTUBE
China Bans TWITTER (and Almost Everything Else)
China Bans LIP-SYNCING
AVATAR Partially Banned in China
New WORLD OF WARCRAFT Banned in China
PLASTIC BAGS Banned in China
GUNS N ROSES Album Banned in China

Re: What do you think about censorship?
I think that as adults we have the right to make our own decisions about what the view and what to do. If no one is getting hurt (and I mean in a direct manner), then it should not be up to the government to tell us what to do. Censorship and obscenity laws really bother me, especially when they're forced on consenting adults.

Re: What do you think about censorship?
It was scary in the middle east, they censored everything and I didn't even want to come on stripperweb when I was there. The funny thing is it was not blocked for the first 4 month, then when I was leaving somehow this site ended up on the blocked list. Then you have to use the satellite phone to connect and it is so expensive. But thats the only way. That was my only means to order Victorias secret as well since they were blocked. and I would have to beg VS NOT to put a catalog in my package and hope they remember, otherwise I'd be in trouble for that too. Themz were nightmares I don't know how I did it now.

Re: What do you think about censorship?
I hate censorship. Back in my 20's I founded an anti censorship organization and believe it's never right to tell an adult what to do. What really makes my blood boil is how many corporations here bow down to China or the Middle East and their censorship. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who caters to those who censor are censors themselves.

Long enough you say something that stripperweb.com agrees with, it's OK. Otherwise get your own web site.

Re: What do you think about censorship?
Whilst I abhorr the 'Big Brother' state that exists in Communist China - and other heavy-handed forms of censorship too - I still believe that there is far too much easily available pornography in the World - period.
I'm not talking about available to adults here - I'm talking about children and minors. There are many ways that under age youngsters can get their hands on this stuff - and Mobile Telephone companies are one of the main culprits in making it available.
We must accept however that pornography, erotica and other so called corrupting influences have always been around - and most likely - always will be.
Decent moral standards - and self-censorship - start in the home.
If more modern Parents and Guardians took the time and interest in bringing up their offspring, with a healthy sense of right and wrong - and sensible, well rounded, moral standards and ethics - then they will have done the best they can, to give those children the ability to make informed choices and decisions when they reach adulthood.
Over the age of 18 - the choice is theirs - but they can be given the correct 'life tools' a lot younger.
Censorship would not be so necessary - if the Education was right in the first place.

Re: What do you think about censorship?
Considering their recent reports on male to female ratio.... I imagine I'd be highly frustrated if I was a guy over there right now.

On a similar note, you know what's kind of funny? A five-year old kid here can buy a pack of cigarettes from the same vending machine that sells Mentos and gum.

Where exactly in the Middle East were you, and for how long? Are you Middle Eastern? I'm so curious about/ fascinated by that area, but I think I'm a little too afraid to try going. I'm even a little afraid in China, TBH.

Well that's not censorship. Businesses/websites/communities/society has their own idea of what can and should be said in the places they run or own.
Censorship, in this sense, is the government forcing you to follow a set of standards.

Re: What do you think about censorship?
I'm against it. I think that freedom of expression is a fundamental bastion of a free society. Unfortunately the federal government where I live doesn't share my views.

Ya I am a bit confused. How is your freedom of expression being hindered in Australia? I have not experience this. I've found Australia to be much more liberal than North America actually.

Re: What do you think about censorship?
It's a different sort of society. If you can't handle it, you should leave it. Because you can't change it.

Australia is a nanny state from hell in many respects (BDSM porn is illegal here, for starters, and in my state there's been a proposal to ban smoking in private cars) and the current government is looking to start in on the internet to boot.
Don't get me wrong, there are many great things about this country and, apart from New Zealand, I can't think of many other places I'd want to live, but the cotton wool mentality here drives me nuts.

I was referring to the proposed internet 'clean feed' mainly (which is reminiscent of countries like China and Saudi Arabia) but there's also been a threat to ban small breasted women and female ejaculation in pornography. I personally don't watch porn, so I'm relatively unaffected by this, but I feel very strongly that legislating offensiveness is a slippery slope and a threat to freedom. Perhaps we are less prudish than the US of A, but that doesn't mean we don't still have a ways to go.

I was born here and basically love it, but that doesn't mean I love everything about it. And, in turn, not loving everything about it doesn't mean I should get myself a one-way ticket out. I'm sure you don't love every law your government passes, but that doesn't appear to have sent you running for the Canadian hills.

I agree I am not for censorship either, but that clean feed crap was never going to fly anyways and to compare it to China and Saudi is a bit extreme in my opinion. The intent was to stop child porn which I am sure no one could argue is a bad idea.. only problem is it woulda opened a whole can of worms I agree.
HUH? BDSM porn is banned? How come I can buy it at any local porn store? They are openly selling illegally?
Do you have references for the small breasted and female ejaculation stuff? I am not doubting it, but just curious as to what this is all about. My husband loves squirter films lol.

Re: What do you think about censorship?
^^
The clean feed is going ahead unless it's blocked in the Senate. See: http://www.smh.com.au/technology/tec...1215-ktzc.html
The stated intent is to block child porn, but the leaked blacklist contains much material that has nothing to do with child porn. Thailand's filter was originally touted to be an anti-paedophilia measure but mostly blocks sites that criticise the royal family. The reason I have compared this measure to China and Saudi Arabia is that no other democracy has taken such a step. Further, child porn can be dealt with via ordinary law enforcement. Most of it is shared via peer to peer, which the proposed filter won't touch. That indicates that another agenda is at hand.
Reference you asked for is here: http://www.sexparty.org.au/index.php...fication-board
As for the BDSM thing, I heard it second hand but will google around for you. Wikipedia says it's illegal but the law is rarely enforced, will find you a better reference and then edit.
ETA - Here we go. Sex and violence may not be depicted together, even in X-rated films. Nor may fetishes that 'demean'. I am told that golden shower porn is illegal here, I imagine the demeaning factor is why. See: http://www.caslon.com.au/auscensorregimesnote13.htm

Re: What do you think about censorship?
^wow that is a freaking joke re the female ejaculation and small boobs thing!
Ya I am guessing it would just not be enforced with BDSM. I mean I attend Hell fire in Sydney and it has live BDSM shows.
Do you know of any avenues to take action against all this crap? I'd never heard of any of it and being in the swinging lifestyle 90% of my friends would be really interested in this.

I've written to the federal minister for communications, Senator Stephen Conroy, on a number of occasions and received standard form replies. However, I do think that if large numbers of people complain to the government (particularly if they threaten to vote for another party next election should this government not change its censorship policies), they might be forced to realise that they don't have a mandate for them.
I edited my last post with a source for BDSM, by the way.

What? Where? I watched tons of porn with my ex boyfriend in Jordan and Lebanon off my laptop, absolutely nothing was banned. Hulu was not accesible but I think due to other reasons. I had no problems with banned sites in the middle east.

I was referring to the OP's China syndrome in my reply.
