Ok... how about explaining mixed with WHAT. That would help. Also if you think youre going to get her hair bone straight without heat... Um yeah not going to happen... Just fact of the matter.
Re: for mixed girls....hair
Hello Hun... Im New Here But When I Saw This Post I Had Too Reply!
I Am A Mixed Girl And I Remember Going Through This Same
Fiasco With My Mom And Shee Had No Idea What To Doo Lolz.
Anyways I Would Suggest That You Buy Her Some
"Pantene Pro V Relaxed & Natural (For Woman Of Color)"
Shampoo + Conditioner, Brown Bottles With Thee Purple Ribbon Thingy
On The Front And Also Buy
SPLIT-END PREVENTION LEAVE-IN CREAM
* Get healthy-looking hydrated hair.
* Gentle enough for chemically or color-treated hair
* Use daily to help fight frizz and stay smooth
* Use daily to help fight dryness and stay smooth.
Have Her Wash Her Hair With That And Then When She Gets Out
Make Sure She Towel Drys Her Hair A Little Bit Until Its Slightly
Damp And Then Squirt Some Of The Leave-In Cream Into Your
Hand Like The Size Of A Quarter And Then Apply On Every Angle
Of Her Hair Focusing Mainly On Tha Ends
(It Says Tah Only Use An Amount The Size Of A Quarter But
I Usually Use A Little More Then That Being That I Have A Lot Of Hair).
I Suggest That You Let It Set In For About 35mins.-1 Hour To Let
The Conditioner To Sink In Before Applying Any Type Of Heat To It.
I For One Love The Leave In Cream Because After Using It
And Flat-Ironing My Hair It Comes Out Looking Healthy, Sleek,
And Non-Greasy (Like You Mentioned In Your Post).
The Other 3 Pantene Leave-In Creams/Spray I Recommend Is:
(Links Below)
Humidity Protection
Lightweight Strengthening Leave-In Spray
(Shields Hair From Styling Damage* Such As Frizz & Breakage)
Extra Straight Comb-In Cream
Just Use These 3 Main Pantene Pro V Items For Now For
Everytime Shee Washes Her Hair And I Promise In Less Then
A Week You Will See Beautiful, Healthy, More Manageable Results
In Your Beautiful Daughters Hair And Her Hair Will Smell Really Good.
One Last Suggestion Is If Your Using One Of Those Cheap
Wal-Mart Flat Irons That May Bee Part Of The Problem.
I Would Bring Your Daughter To Sallys Beauty Supply And Let
Them Recommend A Good Flat Iron To Use And As For
A Blow-Dryer I Use This Blow-Dryer Called "Infiniti ConAir Hair Designer"
With A Comb That I Bought From Wal-Mart And I Love It
This Is How It Looks:
I Know All Of This Seems Like Allot Of Work But Its
Really Easy Just Make Sure Shee Dosent Get Anything In
Her Eye Lolz.
Okay Hun Wellz I Hope I Helped And Let Me Know How
Things Go *Smooches*

My Name Is Vanessa BTW ;)
Re: for mixed girls....hair
I'm not mixed but I do have some pretty epic Jew hair. It's seriously pretty nappy especially at the nape of my neck. To get it really, really uber straight and flat I need to blow dry it with a round brush first. This gets it straight but still big and poofy like you described. Then I take the iron to it to flatten it out. I also use smoothing serum and gloss. You can use various products to help straighten it-you'd probably know better than me what works for her hair type.
I don't use anything for heat protection but I know there are products that you put in before using anything heated that will protect it. I think there was a thread in here about it recently.

Around here mixed usually means black/white. Sorry.
Also, I KNOW it requires heat. I want to know how to protect it best.
Re: for mixed girls....hair
To each their own... But Pantene Pro V's ethnic line is absolute CRAP for mixed hair. Im hair stylist besides dancing, and that stuff leaves ungodly buildup. Its meant for extremely DRY hair... And i definitely get alot of parents bringing in their kids, who are of mixed ethnicities, freaking out because they dont know what to use. Yeah I'm mixed as well, and took a while for me to find what i liked. I like using the Kenra line on my mixed clients. Depending on their background... But, try the Thermal Spray for protecting while flat ironing, and the Shine Serum, will give her the nice shiny healthy look, with movement---sans greasy feel. The Thermal Spray is amazing, really seals the hair cuticle and protects great :)
Re: for mixed girls....hair
Take her to a Dominican salon and get a "Dominican Blowout".
If you can.....find a club in your area that does and "Egyptian Blowout" they usually do these at black salons and they're much healthier on the hair.
A regular iron may not be able to get her hair as straight as you'd like go to a black salon. They use Kizure oven flat irons (those things decimate curls).

The Pantene line for ethnic hair sucks...on ALL hair . They might as well discontinue the line.
Re: for mixed girls....hair
If you're trying to get her hair super straight... wash her hair with a really good clarifying shampoo, deep condition it... then blow dry it, add a light serum. A serum with NO WATER, NO GLYCERIN, just some nice silicones like Fantasia IC Hair Polisher or Proclaim Hair Polisher. You can usually get it at Wal Mart or Sally's.
Don't use any hair creams or hair lotions, even if they claim to aid in straightening hair. They contain moisture - that is gonna make the hair shaft swell and it will never be stick straight and it will frizz up in like... an hour.
The hair should be as clean as possible. That's the secret. Clean hair with little to no product.
Then you gotta flat iron it in TINY sections. Always detangle each section first, and be sure to run a fine toothed comb right along with the hair as you are ironing it. Don't touch the hair until it cools off. Just let each lil section drop down until you do the whole head. Use duckbill clips if you need to hold it back. Don't put the hair in ponytails cuz that lets the warmth from your scalp and the iron work together and create steam which will make your roots revert faster.
Once you are done, spray a light mist of serum over it. The same hair polishers come in spray forms too. Brush that through, and then you are finished.
Use a ceramic or titanium flat iron that goes up to 450 degrees. When used correctly they cause minimal damage to hair. You can use an oven and a marcel iron, but those are pretty damaging.
SIDE NOTE:
As for asking what a child is mixed with....
... it does not matter. At the end of the day people of color are all some admixture of African, European, and Asian ancestry.
Seriously.
So when someone is asking about dealing with mixed hair, you can pretty much assume that they are not asking how to deal with mixed German and Swedish hair, or mixed Nigerian and Ghanian hair.
We know they are asking African mixed with something else.
I'm Arabic.... my hair reflects Europe, Africa, and Asia.
My neighbors also Arabic but from Yemen and their hair is pretty much the same as what is often referred to as "African American Hair".
There is a REASON biracial black and white people often look the EXACT SAME as Hispanic people, Arabic people, etc. There is a REASON certain Latino people look entirely Black, White, or Asian. There is a REASON Native American people, and North Asian people look so similar. There is a REASON South Pacific Islanders, East Indians, and Black people have similar facial features and skin colors.
It's cuz they are all mixed.

^^^ This "Black" woman who is actually 66% European and only 27% African (the rest is Asian) has what the extremely miseducated and racially brainwashed people in the west ....is a person who has what many people consider to be "Mixed" hair. ETA... her name is Elizabeth Alexander and she's a professor and poet. She was on PBS last night in that Faces of America show.
I swear to God it's a HUGE pet peeve of mine and it just irritates the fuck out of me. Sorry for going off on that tangent.
Re: for mixed girls....hair
^ Good post, and interesting. I've never thought of hair in terms like that (or race for that matter). I have a g/f who is European as far back as she can trace, yet her naturally blond hair is like - no other way to describe it - ethnic hair. I tell her to rock with it, but she's a sorority girl, and wants her hair to be straight like the rest of her sorority sisters. When I straighten her hair I use the tips you mentioned.
The key things are 1) a good serum 2) Blow out straight 3) straighten TINY sections at a time and 4) patience! LOL!
I don't think you'll do damage to your daughters hair if you don't do this too often. Also - chances are this process will require her to sit still for more than an hour, so I doubt she'll want it done often.
