"what do you do for a living?"
Ok I am a full time stripper/sex worker. And it annoys me when I get asked this (while working at the club) and their typical response is "oh____(insert judgmental statement here)" after I tell them I am a stripper.
Now i know many of you have jobs outside stripping, but there are a lot of us who don't. We strip for a living.
What also gets me is the judgmental comments I get once I tell people about my education. I did not drop out of high school, infact in high school I was on the honour roll. I attended university and have a psych degree. I CHOOSE to work as a stripper. Well actually to be honest it is more a choice that has to do with money (so in some odd way I don't choose). I just refuse to accept a low paying job considering I have a degree. I see many of my classmates graduate to only find themselves in a $14/hr job.
considering I have student loans I have to pay back (to the tune of $400 a month), high car insurance ($410 a month) and everything else I can't afford to accept $14/hr.
Re: "what do you do for a living?"
I tell people I'm an entertainer.
I choose to do this too, and I graduated college. So if people say anything to me I'll usually say that I enjoy my job and it beats sitting around at a desk getting fat and having to deal with paperwork and unappreciative people all day!
Re: "what do you do for a living?"
I have new dancers ask me this same question. I tell them I'm retired and go fishing, play golf, work in my Veggie Garden and come to the club and spend my extra money buying dances from the lovely young ladies. Life is good.
Re: "what do you do for a living?"
I don't know. I sort of enjoy shocking people. But I have to admit I PROFUSELY apologised to my MIL when I met her for being a stripper, so I get the judgmental angle ( which she wasn't at all, she was totally ok with it).
Tell people you're self employed, or that you work in a bar. Or just be outrageous and say you're an international woman of mystery. I like that one.
Re: "what do you do for a living?"
no shame here I say I am a stripper who escorts on occassion.I make 75% of my income stripping the rest escorting, I like escorting but don't want to do so much of it as to ruin the one thing I like about it the fun and excitement. most men outside the club are truly courious about meeting a stripper outside a club.I actually carry biz cards.

I've met a few dancers like you at my local SC who escort on the side. We occasionally meet up OTC. :)

$410 dollars a month for car insurance!!?? That's $4920 a year! I have never heard of anyone having to pay such a high insurance rate for auto insurance. Just how bad a driver are you???
Re: "what do you do for a living?"
i tell people i am a professional naked person.
i find that since i have absolutely no shame in what i do i really dont get much shit for it. at all.
Re: "what do you do for a living?"
People look surprised when i tell them, but I like to just keep talking as if nothing ever happen. Don't give them time to let it sink in. Just move on in the convo. It's normal to you, so make it be normal for them... haha.

I might understand the question a little more if you were asked this outside the club, but from a guy in the club?
Why should you feel the need to justify what you do to anyone? Is someone else paying your bills? I know plenty of women with degrees that dance, primarily because the money is better. Unless someone else is paying your bills then nobody else gets a vote.
You're probably doing better than the guy who asked that dumb question anyway :)
Re: "what do you do for a living?"
I hate that too Jenni. But take heart in what rickdungan said - you're doing better than the asshats who ask the question in the first place.
And good for you for knowing you shouldn't accept 14/hour. You're worth more than that.
Re: "what do you do for a living?"
Is the question, "what do you do for a living?" maybe just their way of conversation? A lot of girls have jobs outside the club or are in school. That's the only thing I can guess that they would be asking about unless they just aren't very bright.
I teach mostly and strip on the side and switch it around back and forth. I always answer the question that I'm in college when asked because I don't like most people's reaction to the truth. Outside the club I'm more than happy to announce that I dance.
