Re: i dont like to say stripping, i prefer "dancing" lol
^^ Hehe. I know the feeling. It's not easy to create euphemisms for an occupation that everyone else seems to look down on. But you're not lying when you say "Dancer," that is what you do.

Re: i dont like to say stripping, i prefer "dancing" lol
yeah I definately prefer dancer than stripper
-
Re: i dont like to say stripping, i prefer "dancing" lol
I preferred dancer because I was an actual dancer. Besides at a few clubs I didn't remove any clothing (just bikini dancing) so calling myself a stripper in those cases was a joke.

Re: i dont like to say stripping, i prefer "dancing" lol
I go either way. Doesn't really matter to me. *shrugs* I also like Erotic Maneuvers Specialist or Stripteasiologist. :D

I love that. Hehe. ;D "Erotic Maneuver Specialist." Someone should make a shirt that says that, I would TOTALLY buy that. :D You're so witty.

Re: i dont like to say stripping, i prefer "dancing" lol
You can look up old posts on this. I take zero qualms these days with the term "stripper", as it relates to striptease - which is increasingly becoming a lost art!

I like ecdysiast..it throws people for a loop :-)

Re: i dont like to say stripping, i prefer "dancing" lol
I dunno. It really doesn't bother me.
Stripper, dancer, entertainer.... We do it
all. :)

Re: i dont like to say stripping, i prefer "dancing" lol
I call myself a stripper.
I have no formal dance training so I feel calling myself a dancer is a disservice to real dancers.

Re: i dont like to say stripping, i prefer "dancing" lol
I think of "stripper" as merely descriptive. I own it!! I reclaim the term as positive. And, after all, it is the purpose of me being on stage. People aren't just paying to see me dance--they're paying to see me strip. :)

Re: i dont like to say stripping, i prefer "dancing" lol
I'd announce myself as a 'stripper' just so people get the idea about my job and know that I am secure in what I do, however my job is, realistically, more of an 'Exotic Dancer', since there is little to no stripping involved in our club, and it is mostly entertaining dancing with our tops off. The explaination isn't necessary, and 'stripper' gets it done, but we all do little varying things that allow us to say it differently, I'm sure.

Re: i dont like to say stripping, i prefer "dancing" lol
Exotic dancer? Like you have a goddamned basket of fruit on your head? Sorry, everyone, if you take your clothes off and dance around for money in a strip club, you're a stripper. Ballerinas don't grind dick.

^^^ Thank you for the lovely imagery. lol

Re: i dont like to say stripping, i prefer "dancing" lol
Amen I love telling people my job, or ex job or whatever it is. And I love paying in dollar bills and 2 dollar bills. Really keeps em guessing. But then again I'm the kinda person that's all 'if you don't like it you can suck my stilettos'. :D
I find amusement in other people's stupidity, mis-education, or old fashioned-ness. Ooh I made up a word!

Re: i dont like to say stripping, i prefer "dancing" lol
I agree with charlie61. I feel about the word 'stripper' the same way I feel about the word 'dyke'. I can let it sting me, or I can turn it around and make it be awesome and powerful...

Although I find your comment amusing, there is reasoning behind the term "exotic dancer". Many of the movements found in stripping relate back to belly dancing, and the dances that were taught to young women to prepare their muscles for sex and childbirth. They weren't westernized styles of dance, therefore they were "exotic"

Re: i dont like to say stripping, i prefer "dancing" lol
For me, it depends on to whom I am speaking and my mood. Example: feeling down: random person on the street=dancer, friend=stripper.
I just don't want to deal with the prejudice sometimes.

Re: i dont like to say stripping, i prefer "dancing" lol
I get this perverse pleasure from flinging that word at all of the customers in the club...who often seem quite offended by it. I'm a STRIPPEERRR! ::insert maniacal laughter::

It's been a bit since I posted that but ultimately I am of the opinion that the title is completely irrelevant to me. The job is the same no matter what I call it, or more importantly, I am the same no matter what I call it. I no longer have any feelings on any particular term for it and use them all. Someone who has a problem with what I do is going to hate it regardless of what I call it.
It has been my experience that those of us who despise the term "stripper" and NEED to be called otherwise need to seriously consider why the views of others bother them so much because the title DOES NOT MATTER. It changes nothing. By calling yourself a stripper instead of a dancer you are not going to suddenly change into something else. I am classy and beautiful regardless of if I am being called a stripper, a dancer, or a magical ass and titty fairy.
If you NEED to call yourself a dancer or whatever to be able to do this job, just at least be aware of why you need to do it. I totally get that as well; there's a reason why most of us go by a different name at work. We need it so we can get in the zone and in many ways be someone else.
I will say that had I been in this profession in when I was in college I'd have written one kick ass semiotics paper about Saussure's signifier and signified and the adult industry. The words can be so loaded.

I usually tell people that I dance in strip clubs.
