CNN - 'Say Goodbye to Full Time Jobs with Benefits'
(snip)"NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Jobs may be coming back, but they aren't the same ones workers were used to.
Many of the jobs employers are adding are temporary or contract positions, rather than traditional full-time jobs with benefits. With unemployment remaining near 10%, employers have their pick of workers willing to accept less secure positions.(snip)
(snip)"James Stoeckmann, senior practice leader at WorldatWork, a professional association of human resource executives, believes that full-time employees could become the minority of the nation's workforce within 20 to 30 years, leaving employees without traditional benefits such as health coverage, paid vacations and retirement plans, that most workers take for granted today.
"The traditional job is not doomed. But it will increasingly have competition from other models, the most prominent is the independent contractor model," he said.
Doug Arms, senior vice president of Ajilon, a staffing firm, says about 90% of the positions his company is helping clients fill right now are on a contract basis."(snip)
(snip)"Much of the change is due to employers' desire to limit their costs. Stoechmann equates the shift to the one seen in retirement plans, in which employers moved away from the traditional pension plan toward defined contribution plans, which passes more of the burden onto the employee.
Demographic factors are feeding the shift as well. Stoechmann said many younger workers are more open to the idea of not tying themselves to a single employer.
And as baby boomers reach the age when they are eligible for Medicare and not dependent upon their employer for health insurance, many are more open to contract work.
Health care reform legislation passed earlier this year, which will create a mandate for employers to provide health benefits for employees but not contractors, will also feed the trend.
"Once you have an employer mandate in place, you create an incentive for employers to get around that mandate," said Susan Houseman, a senior economist studying labor issues at the W.E. Upjohn Institute.
Houseman also believes the jobs market could stay tilted in favor of employers for much of the coming decade, because of the depth of job losses and the lingering weakness in the economy.
Sara Horowitz, the founder and executive director of the Freelancers Union, an advocacy group for freelancers and independent contractors, said that employment laws and protections have been slow to recognize the shift. For example, independent contractors aren't eligible for unemployment benefits. And they have to pay both the employee and the employer match on their Social Security taxes."(snip)

Unions with their unreasonable refusal to modify pensions and benefits to save jobs ?
Democrats and RINO's with their hostility to employers ? Not to mention excessive taxes and regulations ?
Employers themselves ?
Re: CNN - 'Say Goodbye to Full Time Jobs with Benefits'
No....Mel's mission to constantly post negative articles, in order to depress the fuck out of everyone.
Re: CNN - 'Say Goodbye to Full Time Jobs with Benefits'
I just got a full-time job offer with EXCELLENT benefits. It took a while of looking, but they are around! No more contracts and temp work, hooray!
Just sayin...didn't bother reading the article. I'm in a great mood right now and don't want to get depressed by reality, lolz.
Re: CNN - 'Say Goodbye to Full Time Jobs with Benefits'
^^^ that's fantastic news !!!
And no I wasn't deliberately trying to spew bad news. However, I posted this mainstream media news report because I felt that the topic was significant. I also felt that, if analysts are already seeing a 'shift' towards zero fringe benefit independent contractor jobs, the overall financial impact is likely to become very significant !

Do you really need another bad news story to think about? Cuz that's all you're gonna get out of Melonie here. It's just gonna make you feel bad. You want that? Then fill your boots dude. Fill your boots in the Dollar Den of Doom.

Perhaps if KS_Stevia had taken all of Melonie's doom and gloom news that she is constantly posting seriously, she would have given up looking for a job instead of continuing to work hard at it, and landing something good.
Re: CNN - 'Say Goodbye to Full Time Jobs with Benefits'
HB is right, this may as well be the doom and gloom forum. It's depressing to even step in here. I look for the "real" Dollar Den posts but try to avoid Mel's "armageddon" posts. It's a little like a train wreck though...don't want to look but can't help myself sometimes.
I'm pessimistic about the future of the US but Mel makes me look like a wild-eyed optimist. I doubt anyone other than newbies, Eric Stoner, and a few hardcore/thick-skinned vets ventures in here anymore.
Re: CNN - 'Say Goodbye to Full Time Jobs with Benefits'
To the "Pollyanas" who are frustrated by Mel's "Reality Tour" : What "good news" would you like us to take note of ?
The Federal and most state governments are broke. Would you like us to pretend otherwise ?
Europe is broke and the Euro has hit a four year low against both the Dollar AND the Swiss Franc. We should ignore that ; why ?
Fannie and Freddie are both technically insolvent. The taxpayers are potentially on the hook for about THREE TRILLION DOLLARS !
The Social Security and Medicare Trust funds are both technically insolvent. As are many state and local pension funds.
You want some good news ? The Mexican birth rate has been declining and there will actually be a labor shortage in our southern neighbor. Starting in about twenty years.
More good news ? While Brazil is humming along, there are indications that China's economy may be slowing.
While individual triumphs like Stevia's are marvelous ( congrats btw ) that's all they are. the BIG Picture still looks lousy and it's getting WORSE.
Re: CNN - 'Say Goodbye to Full Time Jobs with Benefits'
There's plenty of good news. The economy is growing instead of shrinking. The economy is adding jobs instead of losing jobs. Our major financial institutions are no longer on the verge of collapse. Our major automakers are no longer about to go out of business. The number of foreclosures has gone down. Interest rates are at record lows. Inflation is low or non-existent. In a few years, millions of baby-boomers will start leaving the work force.
Re: CNN - 'Say Goodbye to Full Time Jobs with Benefits'
Thanks everyone!
In the case of this article though, Mel makes a strong and compelling point. Having gone through the search for a permanent benefits position..it took me 14 months! That's right. I've never gone this long without a great job offer. And the 3 jobs I worked in the meantime were all 1099 type contract work with zero benefits.
This trend isn't going to decline, its important to note. Doesn't mean we should all give up....just something to consider; if you might lose your job soon...OR are a stripper looking to get out and think you might have a kushy corporate gig with benefits lined up;
-Get your cash reserve savings as flush as possible
-Start looking at private health insurance for yourself, even just a major medical policy, add the cost into your budget
....just to start. I was okay cash wise when I got laid off, but not great. I also didn't take the COBRA I was offered because it would have been $400 a month. THEN...congress passed the act to subsidize COBRA, but I followed up on it a day too late (my fault for not opening the letter on time). I have some health issues and have had to pay out of pocket cash for everything. Fortunately, Schedule C medical deductions have improved and I was able to deduct a lot of it..but not everyone can itemize deductions. Point is...we should all be prepared for the future.
Have any of ya'll been to job fairs over the past year? I have. Companies that are attending are looking for independents that will work on commission only and build their book of business. Not all companies, but many.
I answered job ads that I was 100% perfectly qualified for, and didn't even get a single call or email...aside from the "we've received your application". And I'm well suited for a number of professional gigs and have the experience to back it up.
So imagine a dancer, fresh from club burnout, looking for something stable...with a big black hole for her last 4 years of employment. Its going to be tough.
So, Mel, I say, thank you for this article. Although I don't agree with most of the "tin foil hat crowd" stuff, we can't completely ignore reality. Some of us aren't sitting in a comfortable financial position at the moment, we are still in our "achieving and accumulating" years, and we must look at the reality, manage risk as well as possible.
Oh BTW, I AM STILL OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THE FUTURE AND THINK WE ARE ON THE UPSWING. BUT THE GREAT AMERICAN EMPIRE OF THE USA IS GOING TO SLOWLY CONTINUE TO DECLINE OVER TIME. That's patently obvious. Doesn't mean the end of the world. Europe was in decline until the EU. Now look at it, despite some of the bankruptcy and currency issues of late.

I am not looking for positive economic news...just as I'm not looking for negative news. Why post ANY news here?
We hashed this out a while back and nothing has changed, so I don't know why I'm bothering, but my understanding of this forum's function is for practical, how-to money management for strippers.
Instead, we're treated to a daily barrage of "end of the world" news articles from Mel, punctuated by your responses. That is about 90% of this forum. Who wants to read that?
Like I said, I'm actually pessimistic too, but is that the purpose of Dollar Den...to tell everyone how bad things are? I just counted the number of posts on the front page of this forum. There were 30 "new" threads. 20 of those were of the "doom and gloom" variety.
