Why do people hook on the streets?
Sorry if this is a very naive question.
I've been having a lot of online discussions about prostitution lately. I've always had a fascination with the sex industry, but I don't know much about "streetwalking." I've met a lot of escorts and former escorts, but never met anyone who hooked on the street.
Here's what confuses me- it doesn't seem like it's hard to start working through an agency. I even had a friend who was homeless and living out of a shelter for awhile, and she was able to get work through an agency. She's of average looks, didn't have anything in the way of nice clothing or anything. I know if I was going to get into prostitution, I would start calling agencies.
So it makes me wonder, why are there so many people streetwalking when it's not that difficult to get work through an agency?
-
Re: Why do people hook on the streets?
Probably because they have drug habits, pimps, obligations, or low self esteem holding them back. Face it, some people just can't act classy enough to charge $300+ an hour. It doesn't work. I'm sure there are also women who are naive to agencies and don't even know they exist, or how to contact one. I'm pretty sure they do background checks before hiring (at least reputable ones) and I've been told they won't hire people convicted of drug or prostitution related offenses. If you start hooking at 15 and already have a record before an agency will hire you then you don't have a shot.
I think that's why. All situations are unique though, I'm speaking in stereotypes here.

Re: Why do people hook on the streets?
well a streetwalker might charge 20 bucks for a back alley -sexual act- while agencies charge a few hundred for the girl to just show up and anything else is extra
there is also the fact that a streetwalker does not have to make appointment's
some individuals value not having a set schedule and not having to report to anyone
there is also the fact that some streetwalkers are controlled by a pimp and they did not choose to get into prostitution but were forced into it
-
Re: Why do people hook on the streets?
^agree. I think a lot of it is self esteem.

Re: Why do people hook on the streets?
Because they're underage. A lot of agencies won't hire minors.
True story, my sister is/was a streetwalker. She had a rough start to life, was molested by her grandpa at a young age. She was put into foster care and then adopted by my parents. However, my mom is unstable and emotionally abusive. So like most of the kids in my family (myself included) she ran away at 15 and hit the streets. She didn't have anywhere to go to get out of the house. These are the perfect situations for pimps to take advantage of. And, yes this is actually common, minor runaway gets taken in my pimp who shows affection and obtains her loyalty, rents her out (often not by her consent) and makes it near impossible for her to leave by taking her money and threatening her life. She can't go to authorities either because she'll likely be raped, locked up, or ignored.
Contrary to popular opinion, many street walkers do not use drugs. Often their pimps will take all their money so they have no money for drugs. If they hoard money and are caught they are killed.
I've been dealing with my sister's pimps since I was 8. Every time she ran away they'd call my phone looking for her, so she's tried to get out for the past 14 years.

That is so sad. Being a streetwalker seems like a terrible life. Years ago I danced with a girl who got addicted to heroin and became a streetwalker. She went from a very beautiful girl to someone who was dirty. Very sad.

Contact your local SWOP Sex Workers Outreach Project and volunteer with them to find out why they work on the streets

Re: Why do people hook on the streets?
there r prolly a lot of variables. while drug abuse may be one reason it could b thats all they kno. if u dont have the knowledge that there r other safer ways to work for urself they wont. im assuming pimps can offer the world at first n by the time they realize they r not getting it its too late.
ive also seen a lot of "run down" older women who are streetwalkers. it looks like many of them have just lived a very hard life and didnt kno they had options.
-
Re: Why do people hook on the streets?
Like Ksweet said, a lot of the girls are underage, and some don't even have pimps, they just are runaways with not many options.
I also knew a girl that streetwalked because she had been fired from nearly every club/agency that was around, due to her horrible meth habit. I used to live right near a popular street for that, and I saw a lot of down and out women too, and plenty of pimps.
-
Re: Why do people hook on the streets?
Underage or on drugs...or just a cheap beat ($20 goes a looooooong way down south).
I have never known a free female streetwalker who was not on drugs.
I know many male streetwalkers who really have no options. There are no male escort services in my area and the only way for them to turn a trick is to hit the track. Many of them were also put out of the house as teens because they are gay.

^This is always what my parents said about why my sister hooked. She was molested at a young age, often. And realistically, many streetwalkers have been as well. However, often girls find themselves prostituting shortly after trying to escape these situations, like my sister running away from our mom.
We can speculate reasons why girls do it, but there was probably a combination of things, like sexuality, age, gender, race, class, parents, siblings, early influences, abundance of agencies, sexual, physical, or mental abuse, etc. the list goes on. I'm hesitant to just give an answer, because it kinda reminds me of what people say about strippers, "Oh they're just on drugs", when yes many are, but many of us aren't. There is also an undeniable drug presence in streetwalking, but I also feel like that can be like asking what came first, the chicken or the egg?
BTW, Minnie, that is the best answer EVER.

Re: Why do people hook on the streets?
It could be because of drugs, alcohol, or some type of addiction. It could be because of a pimp. It could be because they do not have knowledge of other ways of doing this business. It could be low self-esteem issues. It could be psychological issues period. It could be a necessity or from the point in their life that they feel they have to and are desperate for the money immediately. It could be all the above and it could be none of the above. They could like the way they do it and prefer that way too though to me it is just too risky and not very discreet nor a classy way of conducting a business. But who am I to judge. Every woman has their own reason why they do this business and how they do their business..........:)

Re: Why do people hook on the streets?
Unfortunately for many streetwalkers, they cannot join agencies because they are underage. Many streetwalkers started working the streets when they were very young for various reasons, they ran away, needed money, addictions, etc. By the time they are of legal age they are usually "stuck" in the street walking lifestyle. Many do have pimps that keep them there. many of them will never join an agency and will continue to work the streets. Yes you can make more then $20 giving a bj if you work with an agency, but does the money really matter when you have an addiction to feed? NO! All that matters is when you will get your next fix. I am not saying all street walkers are addicts or being pimped out but the majority yes.
My best friend in the entire world was a street walker when he was 16. He was gay and ran away from home because he was a victim of child abuse, and could not take it anymore. He had a male clientele. He could not get a real job at 16 turned to the streets to make his money, and worked them into his mid 20's. He never had a pimp but this usually does not go on with male prostitutes. He has never worked for an agency. He hasn't worked the street in a very long time but He still works and runs ads in city life style magazines once in a while. I am not sure if he will ever escape prostitution, he is in his mid fourties now.

Re: Why do people hook on the streets?
Hm why the underage assumption? I disagree. Keep reading I will tell you why.
I agree with AudrinaN that it's a self esteem and I also agree with others that say it's a drug issue.
However, I've heard about boyfriends pimping their girlfriends. How they let this happen? I have no clue.
Since the internet boom a lot of streetwalkers are now advertising online (backpage)
They're the ones offering the $6o "backdoor special" .. lol
Think about it .. WHY are they offering sex for $60 or less? why else? What bill can they possibly pay with that... do you know how many men they'd have to sleep with to make 1k? INSANE!
The biggest assumption in this industry is escorts are all streetwalkers and that we're druggies and unfit mothers. I have met some TRULY amazing women in his business. I've met ladies (not to mention myself) that won't even touch a cigarette. I know ladies in this business that have never had a drink. I know AMAZING mothers like my close friends AudrinaN and Wanderlust (our sw mothers ..sorry I had to call you guys out) We choose to work in this profession for a reason: We choose to live in Fancy neighborhoods, drive nice cars and give our children the best life possible. For example: Yesterday after 3 1hr appointments I made $1050. What did I do with it? I bought my daughter some new clothes, paid my car insurance and threw the rest in my safe. I couldn't imagine taking that money and blowing it on drugs 1.) I don't do drugs 2.) I mean really, how irresponsible, stupid and idiotic.
When I think about a streetwalker, I think damn that's dangerous. How do they screen? What do they protect themselves? Though I think it's an irresponsible and dangerous way to go about escorting, I really can't look down on them. The difference between a street walker and an escort? A streetwalker is selling sex NOT time. An escort sells time. We do not sell different services, this is what a streetwalker does. We are independent and work for ourselves, A lot of streetwalkers have pimps, manages or whatever. We work out of 4/5 star hotels. a streetwalker is usually confined to a car.
Another thing I just want to throw in here is: WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH LADIES WANTING TO JOIN AGENCIES? Let me explain something about an agency: Because an agency is an agency DOES NOT mean you will be safe. Unless you can find a GREAT agency like the ones I've mentioned in other threads then you are GOOD. The agency I worked for was only concerned about their money being deposited daily. They did not care about my well being at all. When looking for an agency be careful. The notion that agencies won't hire underage girls is ABSURD. Alot of agencies DO NOT CHECK IDS! I have seen girls call agencies and start working the same day WITHOUT even meeting the agency owner or anything like that. All they needed was cute pics and they called themselves escort. I find this sickening!
Being an Independent escort is really not that hard. Screening is only research. Taking the time out to look up a customer. When I screen I screen hard. I not only google his name, city and state one of the things I do is check out his wish lists on amazon and eBay. Why? Well if he has wish list and ductape on there I WILL NOT BE SEEING HIM! lol! There is so much more to screening but it's easy. If you can do a research paper YOU CAN SCREEN. Why am I going on about this? Well I was under the impression when I was working for an agency that I was safe, Until 1.) I went on a call where the guy was seriously intoxicated. 2.) I walked into TWO stings and had to literally talk my way out of them. Since I've been working as an independent, I have not had ONE bad date. Again, Thanks to Erin of myhoneysuckle, Ms Ciara of Buffalo and Nationalblacklist.com. Reading is fundamental.
ALOT of agencies are JUST PIMPS. I know of an agency owner in Boston that fucks all the girls that he hires. .. NO no no you HAVE to fuck him. What pisses me off is that the agency is very well known. THIS IS NOT RIGHT! Be careful ladies.
Conclusion: Streetwalkers and escorts are like apples and oranges. The comparison is almost an insult. A streetwalker is simply a prostitute. There are escorts that don't even have sex. We are in the time business more than anything as much as some people hate to believe it ..it's true.

*sigh* Get her help. There is no reason for this seriously. If my sister was a streetwalker I will literally find her wherever she is, kick her ass and get her help.

Re: Why do people hook on the streets?
umm.. i know this is probably not always true, but a lot of streetwalkers I've personally seen look like shit and would never get into an agency. Every time I see them around my neighborhood (yes, i live where all the hookers hook lol) I wonder how anybody would wanna touch that.
-
Re: Why do people hook on the streets?
^ Maybe so! However there are LOTS of agencies that don't give a damn about what you look like. They are also very unsuccessful lol

I feel like you're assuming we haven't tried that. She has gotten help, lots of it. She's had cops looking for her, counselors try to pick her mind, even her birth mom too her back in her home for a while but she still returned to the streets. Keep in mind the last time I saw her I was 8, and my understanding of the situation wasn't as developed as it is now.
Since I last saw her I have looked for her. So has my dad, and we can't find her, and yes we've tried several resources like private detectives and I had a friend who worked at an agency dealing with women who used any government resource ever (food bank, applied for housing, rehab, etc.) in our state, and she couldn't even find her on the entire database.
I really don't think I have any control over the situation, I can't change her mind, she needs to change her mind for herself or she'll have no motivation to get herself out. I would love to help her along the way, but I can't even find her.
Sorry, but I'm a bit frustrated. It's not my fault she's on the streets or dead, it's not like I've been a bad sister to her because I can't find her and no one has been able to convince her otherwise. My first post isn't the entire story of her life, there's a lot of other stuff going on with her too that is too personal for SW. My point being, this isn't simple or easy.

Oh my, I never said it was your fault that she's on the street. I just said to get her help. You definitely can't get her help if you don't know where she is. I am sorry that you're going through that. I can't comment any further as I have never experienced such.

well, in my homeless friend's case, I don't think she could have gone independent right away. As I mentioned, she was lucky to have just a few bucks at any given day at that time. The agency set her up in a motel room for the day, so that right there was probably a good incentive. Not to mention just having someone to set up your appointments for you. I'm not saying agencies are great or the way to go, but if you really need to start working right away and don't have any money to invest, I can see how it might be the best way to get started.

I started my independent career with $400 though I had money in the bank from working with the agency I was with before I decided to make the change. I understand that she didn't have any money. However, A lot of girls are always "I don't have any money to become independent" $400 is not a lot of money. Anyone can dance or cam to come up with the money. You'll be amazed when that $400 turns into $3,000 a month or more (this is usually the case)
Yes agencies will get you started right away but they're really in it for themselves. I understand the desperation but I say If the girl can teach herself P.I skills and can come up with the $400 and just do outcalls for a while (assuming that she mastered some P.I and marketing skills) She could bank.
FYI I do just outcalls 95% of the time and never had a problem. The key here is to work smart.. not hard.

If you don't start with any money... ha! I wonder what client's you'd get.
Think more like fat nasty truckers. You'd have to be a hooker not an escort.
Quote from ciara's phd in hooking: Here she discuss checking into a hotel
Quote:
Please dress with class when checking in,checking out, if going down to breakfast. Please don't dress like a hooker when traveling. Just because you are an escort, doesn't mean you are a hooker. They stand on the street corner. You don't. It will call attention from staff. If you are in big metro cities, put your hair up, have a little bit of discression. In some cities, our industry is totally frowned upon. They coach the staff with pictures of internet escorts. Don't worry about what cities. Just always be prepared and look like a civilian, not a floozy.
Just for those that still don't understand the difference between a hooker and an escort.
You don't need any money to hook on the street but you do need money to become an Independent escort/working girl.. It takes money. The saying it takes money to make money comes into play here big time.
For example: Advertising on Craigslist will get you a few calls but guess what type of clients you'll be seeing. Not one that's willing to pay you $500 an hour plus you won't have a long career because you will end up in Jail.
There are big time dos and don'ts in this industry. Oh I'd love to see the day a girl tells me she wants to become an independent escort and feels that she shouldn't have to spend to get started. I'd be loling for days.
-
Re: Why do people hook on the streets?
Hotels here though not motels.
Some escorts like myself don't need a phone a lot of high end girls are email only.
A good GPS is really all you need. If the girl would rather have a driver for security it will only scare the gent and he will post on the review boards that she was with an agency and well.. there goes her reputation. I drive to all my calls.. I guess I'm just gutsy but I've never had a problem. This is where screening comes into play. Now she could always alert the gent that she has a driver/security and he could be ok with that. Just because a guy freaks out about having a driver/security dosen't mean he's unsafe. Ooh the stories my clients tell me. One of my clients told me about a provider that brought a friend along. The friend was in his living playing with his cat during the date. How humiliating! lol
Advertising is correct. I spend $400 a month if not less. Hell one month I spent $50 and made $3000. Fact is the more you spend on advertising the more you make but anything more than $400/$500 a month is overdoing it and you could lose money.. COULD however I've never heard of this happening.
