Katrina, I perfected my makeup from doing it myself everyday and figuring out what looks best and suits my cosmetic "needs" (how much concealer I need to use, oil free foundation, type of mascara, etc). I have figured out which products I love and which products achieve the goal of making me look & feel pretty.:) My look I use is one I picked up from makeup tutorials on youtube for how to do Dita Von Teese/1940s pinup style makeup. It helped me a great deal in knowing what brands and products to buy. I now swear by Covergirl (foundation, powder, & pretty much everything else), Maybelline (concealers, liquid eyeliner, & lipsticks), Rimmel (for mascara), Revlon (everything else also), & MAC cosmetics (the ultimate in lipsticks!!)
I honestly, in my humble opinion, say that it'd be best to master your own makeup so it costs nothing to look beautiful. Paying money to a makeup artist, unless it's a special occasion, is pointless..at least to me it is..especially when you can do it yourself. I suggest going on youtube and different beauty/makeup blogs and learning techniques that will help you better know how to do makeup just like the pro that's charging you $30.00! ;) Youtube is a goldmine with so many different styles of makeup..from Lady GaGa style to 1940s retro pinup. It also shows all kinds of pretty & sometimes harder to do hairstyles. The makeup and hair tutorials show you tricks of the trade.
Go to youtube and also google makeup blogs or beauty blogs, see what you get. :-*

No one knows my own face like I do, so I don't let anyone do my makeup. I'm afraid to not recognize myself in the mirror or look too different than what I'm comfortable with. There is a certain way I like my eyes and lips to look and the pros aren't much better than myself when it comes to my face. I think stuff like foundation/powder is ok to let someone else do though, if you are bad at it like I am, but I just use an all in one face base and that solves that problem. And I think $30 is very expensive for just working, it'll be dark in the club and most men can't tell the difference anyways. My club offers things like full face makeup, or just eyelashes only or eyelash extensions, hair extensions, etc, for all different prices. I never have tried it. The girls who get theirs professionally done don't make more than I do. Also certain foundations work better for your skin than others, which can only be discovered through trial and error. There is only one makeup that I have found so far that doesn't oxidize on my skin and turn orange.
We don't have a make up artist at my club, but that seems like a pretty neat option for days when you're in a rush and don't have time to do your own make up. My only concern would be that the make up artist would make all the girls look basically the same and do the same look on them all.
i do my own, but if i find myself in a high end club with a makeup artist, i'm gonna have them do it. maybe the money wouldn't be different, maybe it would. but i'd feel a lot more glamorous and confident, and i think my attitude would make more of a difference than my makeup would. i'm good at doing my makeup, but not great.
I was shocked when I found out some clubs even had make up artists lol. I don't think I would use them regularly if my club had them, seems like just another expense on top of already super high club fees and tip out.
The makeup artist in our club gets paid by the club to be there - all we have to do is purchase false eyelashes off her if we want them ($7AUD)
There's also hair stylists that come in too - approx $10 for an upstyle!
<--can't even fathom working in a club nice enough to have make-up artists on staff
Of all the makeup artists I've used(whether it be for the club, modeling, tv, video shoots), I've only LOVED the job they did twice, out of probably 20 or more artists. The others I felt were okay-ish or absolutely HATED.
Of the two artists' work I absolutely loved, one of them looked horrible/gawdy to me in person but great in the photos. The other, looked awesome, albeit heavy, in person and awesome in print/video/etc.
When I do my makeup myself for similar venues/events:
Every now and then I wish I had
a)gone heavier on the foundation/powder,
b)worn eyelashes/not worn them so long or so full---
but I still feel like 'me' or I absolutely love it, can't wait to show it off to everyone, and it is a success sales-wise/product-wise.
So, I'd say, try it if you're curious and have a bit extra to splurge..and if you're not feeling it, then you have your answer. Even if some people tell you that you look great, if you feel totally opposite of it, it WILL affect your earnings in a bad way. But, hey, if you love it, it makes you feel sexy and increases sales, stick with it. I'd say to only deal with it if you see it in a picture and you're trying to look good 'in pictures'. Then, you may see that it comes across differently through the lens and that would make it worth it.
I've always done my own makeup. I can't justify someone doing my makeup at $30/night because what I'd pay for four nights of working ($120) is about the cost of make up I use in two months. Besides, I don't think guys notice subtle details in the dark lights and after having quite a few drinks. By the end of the night, my makeup is usually smudgy and my hair not so great but I still manage to pull in a lot.
Nope I do my own, and I have enough make up to be the make up artist lol so I'd never pay anyone.
I do my own but that's more or less because the housemom's makeup sucks, LOL :) Plus she charges I think like $50.
I buy MAC palettes off Ebay and the face makeup at their store. I also use a lot of drugstore eyeliner and mascara because I found no difference in quality there. I am always searching for a way to minimize my makeup costs but wouldn't give up on anything that doesn't look great.
If I find a club where the makeup is awesome, I would probably use them on nights that usually bank. I definitely don't underestimate the power of makeup. More than it looking amazing, it has a psychological effect of making you project that confidence and money comes to you. Either way, I'd still be looking at her techniques so that I could refine them at home and keep my money. :)
Don't do this. It might make sense to have someone curl your hair for you while you do homework or something so you can maximize the productivity of your time, but honestly, paying to get your hair and makeup done seems silly. The girls at my home club used to do it all the time when our hair/makeup guy was there, and I tried it a few times but didn't notice a difference from getting my hair done. (I usually don't style my hair at all)
I do my makeup myself. I am always trying to improve it. I use MAC and often times I ask the MAC people for tips, I show up with my makeup on and ask what I did right, what I did wrong, how I can improve it.
i wear almost no makeup outside of work because i'm a huge tomboy (i dont have a lot of makeup or skills with them) so ipay the makeup artist at work. it's 20 for hair, 20 for makeup whether you use them or not, so i usually pay the extra $5 to get everything done. i think it's worth it because they're very good, though if i didnt have to already pay the base $20 i wouldnt get makeup done every day. it feels like that's extra money i could've used for a cab lol.
I don't typically use them for two reasons:
1. I've been doing makeup as long as most of them have and do it as good, or better than they can.
2. Even if I use them I still have to do my own fucking eyebrows... and that's the only part I dislike doing enough to pay to have them done.
Charlie,
no way! That's mean. I am not being sarcastic. I apologize fully for seeming like I was being mean, sarcastic, & hurtful. :-(
I'm sorry Charlie. So what if you work at the "dive/neighborhood bar" SC? :-(
All that matters is that you're happy. :-D

Yes girlie it's worth it!!! It builds your confidence knowing your make-up is flawless. If you make that money right back than I'd say do it everytime but if the club is slower than I'd say wait til the weekend. If it's Kathy doing it then you know you'll look your absolute best. She brings out everyone's inner diva with her raw make-up. Also, is everyone else getting theirs done? I remember at another Chicago club, everyone got theirs done so the few girls that didn't looked extra plain. But fuck make-up girl you have a beautiful body. Just keep your titties in their face and they'll never notice your make-up!!! :) :)
I always get mine done! I tell the makeup girl exactly what I feel like and how I like my makeup done. If I really don't like it, I have them fix it (very rare though). The only times I don't get mine done is when 1) 20 girls are in line ahead of me 2) The makeup artist is not here.
I can do my own makeup fine, but it takes the MUA 10 minutes and then it stays all night. Also, I can ask her for many different looks bc she has an arsenal of makeup -- including ones I would be hesitant to try myself. I also think it's fun and I feel pampered and more confident about how I look. I've also learned alot about doing makeup through 2 years of watching our MUAs!
However, our club charges $10 to NOT get makeup, $15 for lashes, $20 for a full face, so it makes sense to get it done.
Just wanted to add, it's not just dives that don't have makeup artists! Some areas like California, don't have them in clubs at all. I can't think of one club here with a makeup artist, and most of them don't even have housemoms. I never heard of either being in a club until I danced in Vegas lol.
I worked retail before I danced, and I'm very good with makeup. Never found an artist that could do it the way I like it, though I will pay to get my hair done. But I have seen some girls whose entire look was dramatically enhanced once they start paying to have it done, and their income DID go up.
Also, be careful with sanitation. I have a friend who caught a staph infection on her face from dirty brushes. Also see if they are using disposables for mascara, or double dipping lip gloss. Bacteria likes to live in moisture. The main reason I don't pay for makeup in clubs besides the part where no one does it the way I like it is because I've never seen a club artist that was sanitary. When you add in the part where there are dirty girls, who are probably sharing the same lip gloss as you, and then going out and sucking some dick... I just get grossed out.
