Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage girl?'
I am thinking about writing a paper about the sexualization of teenage girls and the effects of the "pornification" of our culture and media on adolescent girls and wanted to get some feedback before I started a VERY long and research-heavy paper.
I got into the sex industry a week after my 18th birthday and have been a stripper pretty much since then (I am now almost 27). Looking back, i remember being young and seeing strippers in music videos and in movies and thinking how cool and glamorous it looked and how I almost couldn't wait to try it. (It's sounds fucked up, i know, but it's really common.)
Do any of you remember having those thoughts? I know most of us ultimately got into it for the money, but not every poor woman/college student/single mom does it. So why do we?
I'm not trying to get into anything personal and I know a lot of us came from fucked up backgrounds. I want my focus to be how we viewed the sex industry (as we saw it in the media) as teenage girls and how that may have contributed to us actually becoming sex workers.
ANY feedback would be great. Thanks, ladies!

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
There are lots of posts about people wanting to get information on their topics for college papers, thesis', etc.
I'm curious about how this would count as sound research though? We can lie all the time - and a anonymous website doesn't seem to have much credibility. Are you just looking for anecdotal discussion material? Will the posters privacy be maintained?

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
Yes, i am legit. I am a gender and women's masters student and a veteran stripper. like i said, i am NOT asking for deeply personal answers, i'm just trying to get a general idea of how i could potentially frame my paper regarding the prevalence of sexual images and the popularization of the sex industry in mainstream culture and media and how it affects the minds and attitudes of teenage girls.
for example porn stars writing best-selling books, t.v. shows like 'g-string divas', rap/rock videos with strippers on poles and cameos by porn stars, mother/daughter pole dancing classes at family gyms, ect.
any information i get from this thread is just to help me with ideas and will not and (ethically and legally could not) be used in any kind of final academic paper without permission from the person. not to mention, quotes from anonymous people on a message board is not academic research.
i'd appreciate any insight. if anyone would like to share, but not publicly, you can send me a private message.
also, you can look at my "joined date" and posts on my profile and see that i am a stripper that has been visiting this site for years.

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
When I was younger, I never thought I'd be able to be a stripper because I thought they all had blonde hair and big boobs. The image I got was that you had to be a Playboy model or a super model.
So, I never really thought about stripping when I was younger. I just thought it was only there for the "perfect 10's".
When I turned 19, I kept seeing ads in the paper about clubs needing girls, all sizes, shapes and inexperienced welcomed and that was my first thought ever about stepping foot into a club.
For me, the media had nothing to do with it. In fact, it actually didn't make me think about it all really since I never thought I'd be qualified.
It was my lack of money at the time and those constant ads in the paper...almost like they were calling me...lol
Auditioned at 19, was extremely shocked at the girls and how wrong I was about my idea of strippers!
My sister is 15, and I raised her for awhile. One time at a conference, her teacher asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up. She said she didn't know. The teacher asked what I did. I told him I was a dancer. He asked her if she would ever do that....she replied, "It seems fun!"
What an awkward conference that was...lol
So now, if she grows up and decides she wants to dance, I will feel like part of it is my fault.
Because when I first started, I made amazing money, had a great time at work and gotta dance around to my favorite music.
I warn her that it's not always like that, and in fact, not like that at all for me now (which is why I recently quit)....I just hope she chooses a different path in life....

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
Kind of . I was just plain curious and never was shy about getting naked. I got run out of a strip club at 18 because I tried to go work there and you had to be 21. I went back at 21 and waitressed and then striped later ( when I was 28 ) .

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
avery, if she does start stripping, don't feel guilty. my older sister got me into stripping and i turned out fine(ish). i have also noticed that in the past 8 years, it has gone from dancing to music you love, making money, and giving guys "fun" dances to dancing to shitty music, fighting dudes to keep their hands off you, and still not making shit...

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
i never wanted to be a stripper because of tv or anything. the way strippers were portrayed annoyed me, not because i cared back then or anything, but they had such stupid personalities and looked so glossed up that i felt it wasnt worth the effort to turn into "that" for money or glamour, if you could even call it that. later i became curious about it because it seemed fun and a good way to make money without a resume. it was only when i realized that i didnt have to be those blbow up dolls that pass for strippers in the media that i realized i could strip and wanted to strip.

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
I never wanted to be a stripper because of TV or anything like that. My neighbor (who was always like an older sister to me) had a big influence on me and one time she was talking about becoming a suicide girl for extra cash. She never did it, but she was like "I think it would be so cool. You just take naked pictures of yourself and you get hundreds of dollars for it! I would be able to pay my rent so easily and never have to worry about money" I think I was like 16 when she said that. I was going to wait unti I turned 18 and try it, but having 2 years to think it over, I realized I wanted something more discreet. Suicide girls can be accessed by anyone all over the world and it's a pretty popular website so I figured if I picked a strip club far enough away from where I grew up it wouldn't be a problem.
When I was younger I always thought of strippers as being kind of trashy and money hungry and since I've been dancing I've only met a handful of girls who fit that stereotype.

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
I did want to be a stripper when I was a teenager but I was not influenced by the media (think Im too old there wasnt much shock back when I was a teenager on tv). I was interested because I heard boys at school talking about a local strip club and how all the girls were hot and drove BMWs. I wanted to be one of those girls! Hot and rich. Like avery I always thought I wasnt good looking enough until I went to a club when I was 23. I saw some not very attractive girls and realised I could do it. I come from a middle class background and had a perfect upbringing. The most dramatic things that have happened in my life is deaths of relatives. I was a straight A student, had academic scholarship, graduated with first class honors and never got into trouble. I didnt even try drugs until I was 24 when most my friends were smoking pot daily at 16. I only went out twice to a bar underage and probably only drank underage less than 5 times. I was a good girl. Basically I was drawn by the money.

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
wasnt cause of TV for me. The only thing that I got outta that was thinking that if you wanted a guy to pay attention to you or if you wanted to be considered hot, you had to look like all those girls. I now know better, but it fucked me up for a long time.

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
It wasn't the media for me....I was running with an older crowd in high school and one of them was a girl who moonlighted as a stripper on the weekends.

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
I first told my parents I wanted to be a Vegas Showgirl when I was in 4th grade (my mom always says she should have seen it coming! LOL). Now I would have to guess I seen it on tv since I lived in Chicago and there were no showgirls. As I got older I fantasized about being a stripper and had my parents buy me a 4 poster bed (canopy bed) so I could secretly practice on the "poles". My mom was a teacher and dad owned a business so I had a pretty normal upbringing. So I guess I can only (for lack of a better word) "blame" the media. I guess I've always thought I was a little fucked up to have wanted that as a job so young. I didn't start daning until I was 19 and started taking care of myself. I question in my mind all the time, "why do I not have a problem doing this and most people do?" This is an interesting topic. Good luck on your research :)

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
my mom's a cosmetologist, and i'd sit around in the lobby after school reading magazines some days after school. i read this article in one, marie claire i think. it piqued my interest. i was pretty young at the time. its author has since said that she regrets writing it, etc. oh well. but also, at the time, my hometown had a lot of strip clubs, and we'd drive past one of them all the time, and it had all these burlesque style paintings on the outside. i'd always look at them as we drove past. the place fascinated me. i'm not naturally rebellious at all, quite the opposite really, but the hypocrisy around me at home made me sort of dismiss anything my dad said. so when he said "oh that's a strip club, horrible filthy things happen there." all i heard was "that's a strip club." lol.
if i had been exposed to more of the media portrayal of typical strippers at the time, i'd've never wanted to do it. or at least i'd've felt less confidence in my ability to do it. i'm not a hot, wild, party girl.

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
thank you guys for all of your honest responses. so i guess it was more of the people in our lives and curiosity and money more than the anything else. that's why i wanted to ask before i delved into a research paper with (apparently) no substance.
this is not for a paper, but what is it about us that makes us be able to get naked and grind cock for a living? me and a friend were talking about that at work the other day because we were talking about how we try get our broke friends to try it and, although they genuinely don't judge us for doing it, they're all like, "no way! i could never do that!!"
i'm not trying to get all psychological, but what is it about us that makes it so easy for us? are some of just born with a "don't give a fuck" gene?
also, i'm graduating next spring and have kind of always wanted to do an insider research paper about stripping, but never have because i didn't want to be judged by me department. (i did once as undergrad and i got an A from the toughest professor there). since i'm graduating and don't want to go for a phd, i don't care anymore.
can anyone think of a good idea for a paper about stripping? i'm a women's and gender studies major, so i can take any good idea and relate it to popular research in my field.

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
The media didn't effect me... I honestly had no clue what strippers were really like until I actually went to audition. I thought they were all these super sultry women like Jessica Rabbit or something. Boy was I wrong!
Honestly if you were going to write a paper about stripping I think you should get away from it being from the female side... that's been done too much. You'd be better off writing about male strippers or boylesque where there has been less discussion & people are interested to hear a lot more about it.

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
she sells sanctuary- what was the article about? what was the message you got from it? im really curious.
Also, someone mentioned wanting a 4 post bed to practice on as a kid. thats funny, because at my elementary school they build a type of jungle gym with a fire mans pole and i looove swinging around on it and pretending i was a sexy stripper goddess. yeah its kind of twisted looking back, lol. i can say that 5 years later i am still intrigued when i see strippers portrayed in the mainstream media or pop culture. i love watching tv hows and documentaries realted to the industry, and LOVE reading books and memoirs by former dancers. i recently read one written by cody diablo, and another one called girl, undressed. i think i was somewhat mesmorized as a kid being exposed to this thing also. but like so many of the other girls, i didnt really realize how "real" the women untimately were. started waitressing at 18 and was in awe of some of the girls, and disgusted by others, but nevertheless was dancing 2 months later, after i saw the money!! i can still remember a time that i considered it so taboo and exciting..
XGIGI said shes only met a handful of strippers that were trashy and money hungry, and i wish i could say that!! but i guess thats just dancing in houston for you!
xoxo

I think I was born with that "don't give a fuck gene"...in a way.
I mean, I guess I don't feel bad about it because I was never raised to feel bad about anything I do. As long as I'm not hurting anyone else.
It wasn't easy at first, in fact, I was scared shitless. Only because I had no idea what I was doing..lol
Then lap dances just became natural. Like part of my daily life. So I guess it was just never an issue for me. I never really thought about it really. It was just something I did to make money. At times, A LOT of money.
If I could make $20 every 3 minutes for scooping poop, I would've done that too. LOL
I guess it comes down to never feeling "bad" about it because, like I said, I wasn't raised in a way to feel bad about my choices.

I totally wouldn't be able to do that. I mean maybe for a day... but that would be it. The stripping is like a twisted fetish for me. I love creating unfulfilled desire.

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
I think I have the "don't give a fuck gene". I remember buying tampons and condoms for my friends and cousins in high school because they were too embarrassed. Shoot, I started buying tampons two years before I had my first period and condoms about five years before I started having sex. I just really didn't care.

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
The media definitely didn't affect me: it just made me think that strippers were all blonde, beautiful bimbos.
I got into stripping because of the money (I didn't need it, but I sure did want it). I got the idea from How to Make Love Like a Porn Star by Jenna Jameson. Not because it sounded glamorous (quite the opposite), but because it sounded like something I could do.
I had a perfectly normal upbringing. I was always extremely shy and very much a loner (I'm still a loner). Straight A student, never did any drugs, never drank, blah blah. Still don't.
The media stripper seemed the opposite of what I was, but that didn't factor into my decision at all. I don't even think I had media images in mind until after I started working: then I began noticing media references to stripping (they're everywhere!!!).

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
I do remember as a child I was somewhat obsessed with stripping and nudity. One of my favorite things to do was to strip naked and dance as a kid. I even got my friends to do this too (none became strippers oddly). I remember seeing a burlesque dancer on tv and saying "I want to be like her". I also used to pretend my Barbies were strippers and nude models. Oh and I used to get in trouble because I used to show my panties to boys in my classes for candy. I also remember looking at Playboy's and other magazines as a child and very much wanting to pose nude. I never grinded dick so can't comment on that.

If I'm thinking of the same article it was in Glamour in 1993 and it's one of the reasons I decided to go into it. She was a dancer at Rick's in Texas and talking about all the money she made. Then in 2003 she retracted it by saying it was a bad choice and drove her to drugs and other issues. I believe her name was Jenny Silverman but could be wrong. I thought it was kind of hypocritical for her to retract things she said but I've seen so many former dancers regret it. Though I'm for the most part retired now I don't regret being a dancer generally. I regret a few things I did, but not so much having been a dancer.

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
I remember being a kid like 6 or 7 years old when my family would drive past this divey strip club with the classic flashing "girls! girls! girls!" sign, I always wanted to go in. Its safe to say I had the stereotypical "stripper" upbringing (domestic violence, sexual abuse, being told me and my brother ruined my moms life everyday, etc.) and we only had a scrambled tv with basic cable, so I can't say tv had an effect, but my mom was always dancing around to eurythmics in the living room, and my dad let me wear his strip club souvenir tshirts to school, i blame them.

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
i didnt even know stripping existed until i was about 19. I heard snippets of girls dancing naked but i also heard they fuck people and do drugs and get into all kids of legal shit. on movies it was like an exciting taboo i wanted to find out more about. its like you wanna look away but you cant. i had a very eastern european upbringing where its like either youre a beautiful bimbo with tits and a convertable or a plain, very intelligent, reserved, shy and controlled girl. i was raised to be the latter but i wanted to be both. i did however dress like a skank 13-15 so i had my mother very worried at times. i was jailbait, and thought i looked heaps hot. idk. indentity confusion?

Re: Did seeing strippers on t.v. and in movies make you want to strip as a teenage gi
I don't recall seeing any strippers on TV much when I was younger, but I did browse around the internet a lot, I learned a lot about stripping, escorting and porn and yes this did make me want to do it since I was around 14-15. :)
