The "why are you a stripper then?" thread
Is anyone out there sick of this question?
I always get the "what do you do for a living?" question from customers. I am always polite in answering, but I feel like saying something to the effect of, "um I am in here dancing for $20 bills, what do you think I do?"
Anyhow whenever I tell my customers about my educational background I always get the question "so why are you a stripper then?". The question always comes off as judgmental as if I could be doing something better with myself. The fact of the matter is stripping allows me to reasonably afford life while pursuing other interests.
Granted I am not making a whole ton of money right now, but I am getting by and saving a little here and there. I am certainly doing better then I would be if I took a job in social work (related to my degree).
So why am I a stripper if I have a BA in Psych?
Stripping allows me to:
-pursue my artistic life-music (I play guitar, harmonica, violin and do some singing)
-take care of my handicapped brother (he was in an accident and now walks with a cane and lost control of his left hand. Luckily he is still "all there" mentally and can speak/think like a normal person)
-pay my damn bills on time
The music is a serious hobby for me and my brother. My brother makes beats and produces, but does not play any instruments or read music. He owns a beat machine which is worth around $2100 plus other equipment. Between the two of us we probably have around $5,000 worth in equipment. He's in to hip hop and I am in to industrial/EBM/metal, but we teach each other a lot of things because we share a common interest-learning music.
We are not "pro" right now, but perhaps one day we will be. We often stay up all night playing music together. If I were working a normal job I probably would not have the time for this.
So why are you a stripper?

Re: The "why are you a stripper then?" thread
because i do what i want to do. i hate when custies ask stupid questions like that. but it's ok. if they don't like my real answer, they wouldn't have liked any other answer either. they're probably just looking for some scared, weak little thing who they can talk into coming back to their place to get raped.

Re: The "why are you a stripper then?" thread
I'm a stripper because it pays better than any other job I could find in this economy, and I like being able to pay my bills and afford things. I quit my "real job" and chose to keep stripping because I made more money and it worked better with my schedule. Since I'm still in school, people don't but me too much about being a stripper, but once I graduate (I'm getting a BA in Psych, too! :D) it will probably get worse.
Stupid custys. They're just jealous that we're smarter than them AND we're taking their money! ;)

Re: The "why are you a stripper then?" thread
YES. Gee I guess a beautiful woman strutting around half-naked in stilettos isn't intimidating enough, they have to ask us this question... ::)
Please. We're not all robots and we do have lives OTC. I am a stripper because it of course brings in money in order for me to buy the things I want. It also allows me to save up for things I wouldn't normally have or have the time flexibility available to me, if I worked a normal 9-5. I have a degree in marketing and plan on using it --whether or not the plan is to start my own business. I figure HEY, I'm using it now in this job! LOL. At times I create art and also love music. I have some demos but nothing professional. Dancing makes it possible to pay for a professional recording, which I plan to do some day.
Bravo to you and your music! What you decide to do with your life is up to you. Don't listen to those douchebags.

Because there are so many other options and opportunities available to me. It's just too confusing.

Re: The "why are you a stripper then?" thread
I also get the "so what do you really do?" question a lot, even though I tend to dodge education questions because mine stopped with 8th grade. I think usually this is just the customer's awkward attempt at a compliment. He's trying to say "You seem smarter/more dignified than the typical stripper." He probably doesn't really want to know how you wound up stripping, he just wants you to know that he's noticed you're special. My personal answer to this question usually goes something like: "Well, the only two well-paying jobs I'm qualified for are dancing and bartending, and I prefer dancing because I get to choose which customers get my attention instead of just dealing with everybody." So he feels special because you chose him when you didn't have to. Of course, that line wouldn't apply to someone with a degree and a music career, but you get my point.

Time to learn about important things that I need to learn.

Re: The "why are you a stripper then?" thread
I hate this question. It's the so "what else do you do". Pisses me off to no end. First if I say that's all I do then" I magically have time "to date their stupid ass and they will ask you out until the cows come home.
And if I say no thanks I'm a bitch and there goes my $.
So I lie.
Of course I work two jobs from first thing in the morning til waaay late at night. 6 days a week. AND on my day off I do laundry and shopping and try to recover. ::)

Re: The "why are you a stripper then?" thread
I try to turn it to a " well I wanted to try this ..... I though it was really hot " blah blah blah way to sell 'em. I took pole dance classes and the works so I tell them my real story and it works, but it's totally not their business if I do anything else or not. So beyond telling my getting started story ( real ) I often lie about various day jobs or say I'm a student ( not true ).

Re: The "why are you a stripper then?" thread
I say "this is what I do right now because I am a very sexual person and I think this job suits me." That spares me the additional prying and primes them for a dance.

Re: The "why are you a stripper then?" thread
Yeah I hate when customers ask the "So, is THIS all you do?" to me that just sounds so rude. I hate when I am all happy and having a good time and then sit with the stupid guy who starts interrogating me! lol, it's a total mood killer and I try and get the hell away from them as soon as possible!!
-
Re: The "why are you a stripper then?" thread
that and the 'what do you do when youre not working'
is either a catalyst to tell you youre too good for this (especially if its your only job) or make dumbass cracks about our lack of intelligence, or imply you should date them and let them save you and support you etc lol
if im feelin playful i just say we get locked into the changeroom all night and have mad pillowfights and a slumber party until our next shift
or
tell them im putting myself through college and they should feel good about themselves supporting a student

Oh tell me about it sister! "is this all you do" is damn rude. I get that a lot.
When I tell them about my degree and my choice to say "fuck society" and dedicate myself to music/art they think I am doing the wrong thing. I get told that all the time. Its like "when are you going to get a REAL job and grow up?" to which I will say "NEVER".
I started this thread because of a show I saw on TV. It is a series called "princess" on slice with financial expert named Gail. She goes in to the lives of "princesses" (ie women who have no control or concept of money and have hence driven themselves in to debt) and brings them back down to financial reality and tries to teach them lessons on money. Anyhow last week Gail had this musician "princess" on the show because she refused to get a job because of her music. She was 35 and just wanted to sing/make music all day. She had spent all her money and was on the verge of being homeless (she could not pay her rent). Gail kept on telling her to get a job to pay her bills. However "princess" never did, she just wanted to work on music all day.
I looked at the situation from my perspective. At least my bills are paid and there is food on my table. I strip because I want to make art/music. Music is not paying right now, but hopefully one day it will.

Re: The "why are you a stripper then?" thread
i was just honest with them. told them it was the best job to let me pay my bills and still do well in school while still having a life.
i found the question irritating, but telling them the truth usually led to more conversation and more money once they learned i really was in undergrad, then law school.

Re: The "why are you a stripper then?" thread
I LOVE the show Princess! And Gail van-oaxley! Shes like a Canadian Susie Orman! Honestly Jenny, I thought the same damn thing when I started watching that show. Those women were Crazy irresponsible - saw an episode where a girl spent 25,000 in student loans on designer clothes!!! I wonder if princess aires in the US?
I have the intro song stuck in my head now.... Bum bum bum bum ... She's a princess..... Haha, im lame.

Re: The "why are you a stripper then?" thread
Me? I'm sorry for not being born as a dude; it seems that in this are all the IT jobs are only for guys, so I decide to fix computers for other strippers thanks to my A+ certification. But my actual primary job is being a computer technician; stripping is more of a hobby, but this hobby is paying my bills right now.
Well, in the present, I got hired to be an electrician; and well, stripping is still how I make more money anyways.
I always tell custumers that despite I'm a good stripper, I don't see myself stripping full time for the rest of my life.

Re: The "why are you a stripper then?" thread
I'm a stripper because of the flexibility, pay, and excitement that comes with the job.
I have the freedom to make my own schedule, which in turn allows me to spend more time with my son.
I am paid far beyond what I ever imagined I could be at my age, which makes me 'check' myself on a 'bad' night.
I also am excited about coming to work and providing a service, which makes it easier to get my ass in there!

i notice the people who tend to ask me crap like this are people who have never been to college themselves and think that having a degree is the fast track to becoming a high paid professional. they are so underprivileged that none of their friends have degrees either and they don't realize that unless you are in med school or law school, a degree does not guarantee a job. a BA in Psych is considered one of many useless degrees and you cant get a job simply by having it. i always mention that i would rather strip than work as an assistant for 10 an hour or work at Barnes and nobles like some of my other college graduate friends do.
if they are rude about it i ask them if they bug the bartenders/waitresses/baristas/gas station employees/cashiers/etc with the same questions, because those jobs are just as "dead end" as stripping.
the worst is when a guy refuses to dance with me because im "too good to be a stripper"
right so apparently because i have a degree and am not hideous with 30 kids and an abusive baby daddy i dont deserve to have money, i deserve to be homeless, praised, but homeless. great logic you're using buddy.

Re: The "why are you a stripper then?" thread
Because I can. That's my answer whenever asked, and that usually gets a "Yeah, if I were a hot girl, I'd be doing this too".
-
Re: The "why are you a stripper then?" thread
So that I can support my 6 kids and my killer crack habit! j/k...
If I'm in a good mood, I'll say I'm putting myself through school.
If I'm in a bad mood, I'll ask them what their job is. When they answer I roll my eyes and say "That sounds sooo boring. At least my job is fun!"

Re: The "why are you a stripper then?" thread
I usually just tell them I danced originally to pay off debt from an ex, then paid for two degrees with dancing. After that I realized that normal jobs were making me fat & miserable. I talked to my doctor about the stress & weight, he was convinced it was all from work & told me to quit. I took his professional medical advice, lost a bunch of weight right away & have been much happier since! ;D

Re: The "why are you a stripper then?" thread
I do it because I am in college and don't receive enough aid to pay for tuition and rent and all other expenses...and mommy and daddy can't provide for me anymore due to loss of jobs and having to support my brothers.
I also do it because I kind of like it (not always of course)...it allows me to be naughty, I love dancing in general. I like getting dressed up and looking hot. I've always been super shy but I feel like putting myself in this situation where I HAVE to approach random strangers has helped me a lot.
I also like being able to do what I want with no bosses really telling me what to do. I can sit around all night if I want. I work when I want.
I also honestly like making people happy and it's also satisfying to me when a customer is really pleased and feels good.
ANYWAY I hate when guys ask me about it because how can you turn the answer into something appealing? I mean, if you have children, habits to support, bills to pay, whatever the case is, most would agree to not talk about that lengthily. I usually say "well I like dancing and I like getting naked."
I also may add that there are "beautiful women, cool guys to talk to, I can get drunk, get naked, watch the games" blahblah what-have-you. Or if I don't care, I just say "money" or I tell them it's for school. or that "I'm smart."
