Cable is .. about the same price and will be a lot speedier. Direct TV will offer DSL or satellite and it still wont be as speedy as cable... and they're kind of assholes.
I spend about 180 on cable that averages 20 mbps, cable television with all the premium cable channels (but no massive sports pacakge) and an unlimited phone line.
Yeah, I use a Sprint SmartView data connection card that goes on the side of my laptop, and I pay $59.99/month (gives me unlimited internet).
It just annoys the hell outta me when it mysteriously disconnects me from the net (which SUCKS for me when I'm on MFC, etc.). And I find it pretty interesting that when I have a past due balance with Sprint, THAT seems to be when my aircard seems to mysteriously disconnect out of the blue (and I have to keep clicking the yellow button to reconnect).
I have clear/clearwire ! it's $30/month (unlimited internet) for a mobile device I stick into my usb port. I have 2, one for my laptop and on for my bfs for a total of $60 a month including tax. I think the price is very reasonable considering its mobile and we can go around town and still get perfect signal. We get great signal, only once i remember not being able to get connected when we had a bad thunderstorm. Customer service is good to me and my account has been as much as a month past due without them disconnecting, I totally spaced out one month and forgot to pay, they just double billed me the next month.
Unless you live somewhere really rural, Cable or DSL are the only way to fly.
Cable is often preferred because it is easiest. But it is a shared connection and in MANY places the cable will be 20Megabits DOWN (to you) and 256Kilobits (really pretty slow) UP (with your webcam to the customer).
Often, and I mean quite often, if you ask your local DSL company, they can provide a much more equalized line, if you tell them you have a higher Outbound bandwidth need. Ihave helped many girls get internet in doing promotion, and have gotten 5Mdown/5Mup before, which would allow multicamming say 10 sites at once....Nice stuff, and it was $44 a month.

It is a interesting sharing............
A) Research which networks have good coverage. (No, I don't mean mobile, that's going to suck for you no matter who you go through.)
B) Learn about different types of connections available. (I don't just mean DSL or CABLE, I mean T1 lines which will blow anything you have at home out of the water.)
C) Understand your equipment. If you have a comp full of spyware, it doesn't matter how fast your internet is. Same for if you have a crappy router or wireless card.
There's a lot that goes into having a good internet connection. You just have to decide what you want, and how much you're willing to pay.
Well the service providers in different regions vary greatly.
So is all satelites super slow for camming?
Anyone know? Just curious?
Yes, all the ones I have used suck. I do like my clear though!
Well this is an old thread. Honestly, you want the best upload speed you can get. Don't worry about the download. I pay for 160/10 mbps. And that is the best I can get in my area.
Don't get DSL. Don't get satellite. And for the love of god, do not use dial up.
