Re: BMW's Don't Do Snow...
Get some snow tires! I am terrified to drive in the snow. It wasn't an issue when I lived in Seattle because it rarely snows and I didn't have to drive anywhere there, but now that I'm living in Louisville and it's snowing right NOW I am probably going to get some snow tires for my truck.
Re: BMW's Don't Do Snow...
Seriously. Get those tires changed ASAP!
Re: BMW's Don't Do Snow...
Your BMW should have a button labeled "DSC" down near the climate control buttons/knobs. Make sure this has not been deactivated.
With this on, your wheels should spin less. They'll still spin, but hopefully a lot less.
Add a sandbag or two to the trunk(boot) and get some snow tires.
Re: BMW's Don't Do Snow...
I hate snow. I too am terrified to drive in snow because years ago I got in a crash one snowy day. It was minor but still scares me to this day.

That's the thing that scares the life out of me too. Years ago I was in a FWD car with a boy (friend) and it skidded on ice and snow - and he had no control. It just went straight into the ditch. I'll never forget he blamed it on the FWD 'cos he said he lost all drive and steering.
So I've bought RWD ever since - but they suck in the snow (and mud come to that). Especially on hills, no grip....just spinning.
I guess Winter tires it is.
Re: BMW's Don't Do Snow...
there is no substitute for AWD ... and BMW's AWD versions do wonderfully on snow. However, when it comes to ice, AWD doesn't help a bit.
Thankfully, down here way south of the border, there isn't a snowball's chance in hell of being able to find enough snow to make the snowball !!!
Re: BMW's Don't Do Snow...
I would change to winter tires (or even all-season tires) and make sure your ABS is working properly. My SUV had sumer tires, and I thought I would okay driving then, and I didnt take my car often either back then. But I had a slight control accident last year, that I replaced them with all-season tires and was ok. My mech said, seasoned tires work fine with AWD in winter.
Re: BMW's Don't Do Snow...
After the third winter in a row where I'd had to call into work for a week straight because the snow was so deep I couldn't tell where my car was... I moved to CA.
It is not a choice I regret.

Re: BMW's Don't Do Snow...
BMW's are fine on snow...BMWs with summer tires suck, as would any car.
And I've always heard athe opposite about RWD_everyone swears RWD is the worst in snow, while FWD is better-obviously not as good as AWD, but better than RWD. I think you're guy just didn't know how to drive on snow/ice.
I have an old sports car that is FWD. Far superior to my RWD Camaro. And with snow tires on it, it zooms up icey hills while SUVs spin.
Re: BMW's Don't Do Snow...
This will be my first real winter in 4 years, and I will not be driving. I'm very thankful. Snow - although beautiful - is such a nuisance.
Sounds like it's time to get those tires changed. And boo on the boys who didn't offer you a push!
Re: BMW's Don't Do Snow...
I was bout to say... isnt BWM German... its the tires girlie. Get some winter ones asap. Ahhh must say I do not miss the snow. You should see Australian's try to drive in even just the rain... you'd think it was a blizzard!
Re: BMW's Don't Do Snow...
I <3 snow. I spent all day whizzing dwn an Italian mountain in heaps of fresh stuff :D
Re: BMW's Don't Do Snow...
Uuugh, I am dreading winter. It lasts like 6 months here, and it gets sooo cold. I'm trying to be positive about it...stocking up on tea and whatnot. But....blargh.
Re: BMW's Don't Do Snow...
My RWD BMW is fine in the snow; throw some Blizzaks on the wheels, and you can drive that thing like a Panzer.
Re: BMW's Don't Do Snow...
^Amen to that, Blizzaks are amazing.
I love the looks on the SUV drivers' faces when my little sportscar zooms past them when they're stuck.
