OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
Im thinking of getting a pit bull. My only issues are the time it takes to raise a new puppy and the litter my friend has is only 3 weeks old now so I wouldnt get it until January and the other issue is my 2 year old daughter. Is it okay to have a puppy around my child?
I would think theyd get used to each other and grow up together.

Re: OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
If you want a pit bull, go to a rescue group. So many are killed every year.

Re: OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
my boyfriends friend has a litter so I wouldnt have to pay for it.

Re: OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
they are excellent dogs. People make them bad not them! I grew up with pit bulls and I couldn't have asked for a more loyal or affectionate animal. They need trauning but that is all dogs. Good luck

Re: OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
Im getting it I decided. I have to go to petco and buy all the stupid things that come with it.

Re: OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
Now I'm all for dog rescuing, and I've adopted several pits myself. I'm a huge fan of the breed.
But since you have a small child, unless you have a lot of experience training dogs, I would not recommend adopting a Pit Bull. You'd have no idea what the dog's background is, and that's just not a risk I'd take with a child. Many pit bulls are sweet with adults, but because they are bred to chase small creatures, and a child tends to move erratically, you risk the dog snapping at your kid.
A pit bull from a good breeder who socializes the dog as a puppy is an excellent, trustworthy pet.

Re: OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
Congratulations! I think it will also be great for your daughter. Pets can teach children so much. Make sure you put lots of time into training. Its a pain in the arse at the time, but remember 1 year of really strict training is not much when your are going to have 12+ years with this dog. I know I wish I put more effort into one of my fur babies back when she was a pup. Its much harder to break habits when they are older.

Re: OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
pit bulls are awesome. my mom has one.
sweetest dog ever. but....
hyper and omg does he have attachment issues. he was a shelter one though, so i dont know how much this is the norm.
he is not the brightest dog we've ever had, but is sweet, and wouldnt hurt a fly (he is a lot of bark and no bite....other than my father *evil grin* which i am ok with).
people make them bad. the breed itself is not.
do make really really sure to socialize it though if you get a puppy. if its an adult, get as much history as you can and introduce it to things slowly so you know where its issues (if any) are.

Re: OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
are you sure you need the most agressive dog next to a child?
no kidding when i was younger there were too many stories on the news of pit bulls killing children or causing serious face and body injury.
my bf says theyre only made to be agressive towards other dogs but an agressive dog is an agressive dog...
why pit bull? what it is you love about them and can that be substituted for a safer dog?
my 2 cents...

Oh for goodness sakes. It isn't the breed, it's PEOPLE. People get the dog because it is the most devoted dog possible. What makes it a good fighter and a good guard dog is that it will do anything for its master...if that means protect them while in agonizing pain, so be it. Horrible or ignorant people know this, and make it as aggressive as possible. Then they're shocked when it bites a child.
Pit Bulls are in the news for attacks because they're the trendy tough dog right now that wannabe tough guys get. A few years ago it was Rottweilers that were all the rage and consequently considered by the media to be "evil and vicious", and before that it was bulldogs. Heck, in a few years, it will probably be Huskies and Pit Bulls will be back to being a beloved pet.
A Pit Bull raised well as a puppy and properly trained is the best dog in the world. I have owned every kind of breed, and no dog is as eager to please, as sweet, or as loyal as a Pit.
There's no such thing as a "safer" dog. The most common dog bites are from Golden retrievers and Cocker Spaniels, the most popular family dogs. A bad owner will make a bad dog, regardless if it's a Pit Bull or a Poodle or a Rottweiler.
It's not the dog that's unsafe, it's moronic people who make a monster.

Re: OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
Young puppies tend to bite/chew/lick a lot when you try to pet them.
It's not agressive/meant to injure... but their sharp little teeth WOULD probably hurt a child's hand.
Something to look out for.

Re: OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
Yeah, pits were bred to fight dogs, not people. They can tend towards dog aggression naturally, but should also tend towards amazing loyalty and friendliness toward people.
Just be careful around your daughter, the same you would with any other dog. If you aren't experienced with dog training, then maybe going to a good obedience class would be a good idea for you as well.

Re: OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
My advice is to evaluate why you want a pit bull. Do you want a DOG, or do you want a pit bull? If you want a dog in general, then you need to find a dog that fits with your lifestyle and personality. Pits need a strong, calm, and gentle owner that will exercise them a LOT in order to thrive.
If you want a pit bull specifically...why?
Your answers will guide advice you get from here.

Re: OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
a. My boyfriends friend has a litter of pit bull puppies.
b. I need a dog for rotection when my boyfriend is in West Palm or Serbia and Im by myself.
C. I would have it trained when it reaches the appropriate age.

Re: OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
Human aggression and animal aggression are two different things. Make sure you check the bloodlines of the dog, raise it correctly, and you will have an excellent companion.
-
Re: OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
If you are looking to buy a dog for protection, and will have it trained "at an appropriate age" (WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?!), for the love of god (and your child) DO NOT get a Pit Bull.
It sounds like you really have no idea about dogs or Pit Bulls or training-you just want a scary dog for protection and a friend has one available.
Pit Bull owners need to be well educated about the breed and dog training BEFORE the puppy is ever even born. Also, getting a dog "for protection" is a red flag. This is an animal that will be around a toddler-you can't have a dog that is child-friendly and trained to be a guard dog.
A well-trained Pit Bull starts the second its born. Good breeders will begin training and socializing at day 1-owners start the day the pup gets home. It's not a dog you get because it's convenient because a friend happens to have available pups. Pit Bulls can be bred for different things-you want a Pit Bull that was specifically bred to be a companion dog, not one that is bred to be a fighter or an attack dog. You have no idea how this friend has bred these dogs or how they've been raised.
I repeat-Pit Bulls are fantastic-if you know what you're doing.

Re: OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
I wouldn't have a Pit Bull around a child. Those dogs sometimes just snap and go crazy. I wouldn't take the chance. It's like leaving a loaded gun lying around the house. Find another dog that can protect you but isn't bred to kill. Pit Bulls were bred for war and you can't train that out of them.

Exactly. Lol @ "training at an appropriate age." Every interaction you have with your puppy is training, whether good or bad. Training is not something you decide to do when your dog is a year old and out of control.

Re: OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
If you want a "mean looking" dog that's receptive to training, you might look into Rottweilers. They tend to be very good around kids, very lovable, very cuddly, yet FIERCE home defenders. They're also extremely intelligent and loyal.
And believe it or not, most typical "family dogs" like labs or retrievers can also be very good guard dogs without sacrificing affection to their families. It's all in how you socialize the animal, but some breeds are genetically inclined (sharpeis, for instance) to be loyal to ONE person.

Re: OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
Pitbulls are amazing dogs, but not everyone should own one. Although some are born submissive, the majority tend to be pack dominant, and once a pitbull assumes what it perceives to be a dominant role in your pack, it can become a threat.
If you are going to own a pitbull you need to be able to speak dog language in order to place it in the hierarchy of your family, and you will need to be able to do so calmly and without yelling at or getting physical with the dog (doing so will just make it a neurotic mess, and only makes you seem weak).
If you doubt your own natural pack dominance in regards to communicating with a pitbull, I would highly suggest you take training lessons with the dog at an early age. Doing so will allow you to learn how to communicate and assert leadership with the dog, and also will socialize your pitbull with other dogs right from the start.
If you keep the above factors in mind, you will have yourself the gentlest, sweetest, most loyal, loving, and caring dog you could ever ask for. Pitbulls never realize they are 'big dogs', and will act like babies with you no matter how old or large they get. They are wonderful dogs in the right hands.
Another excellent option you should consider is Staffordshire Terriers. They are known as 'nanny dogs' because of their affinity for and gentle protectiveness towards children.

You've clearly never had a pit bull. They're not crazy monsters who snap without provocation-if trained correctly.
My family and I train service dogs, and pit bulls are routinely the best dogs we have-they beat out the retrievers and the German Shepherds every time. We've trained and placed about 30 in homes for the disabled in the past 10 years, and we've never had a dog bite or growl, or show the slightest bit of aggression.
Beyond that, pit bulls weren't bred for war-heck, they're not even really a single breed-pit bull is a term to describe 3 different types of terriers. They were bred to hunt cattle and hogs.

A Pitt Bull almost killed our family dog. This happened about fifteen years ago. My mom was taking our dog for a walk and a Pit Bull broke the leash of its owner and nearly killed our dog. Luckily, a cop car was driving by and the cop pepper sprayed the Pit Bull until it let go of our dog. The cop said he was about to shoot the dog if it wouldn't have let go when it did. Our dog died 2 weeks later of a heart attack (we think) and I'm sure being attacked by the Pitt Bull contributed to its death.
We had a case two years ago in my state were two Pit Bulls attacked and killed their owner. I've read so many stories about these dogs killing other people's pets or mauling someone. Many State legislatures around the country want to ban these dogs. Pitt Bulls are the sweetest dogs in the world until they kill another animal or maul someone. You always see these stories on the news about some maniac who went on a shooting spree or turned out to be a serial killer and everyone who knew the killer said he was just the sweetest guy you'd ever want to meet. ::)

Of course, let's not forget the true terrors of the dog world, ladies and gentlemen.

Dogs bites are going to happen. They are animals, not people. I've had way more out of control small dogs than large dogs run up and attack my dog, but that's okay because they're "cute". ::)
You always hear of "pit bull" attacks because the media loves to sensationalize these stories. Most of the time the dog isn't even a bull breed.
Back to the OP.....honestly, if you are asking complete strangers whether or not you should get a pit bull pup to raise with your 2 year child while demonstrating absolutely no dog knowledge, then the answer is pretty obvious to me.
I wouldn't recommend a puppy of any breed in your current situation.

Re: OK I want to get a Pit Bull.. what do you think?
^I'm not saying pit bull attacks don't happen (though most people can't identify a Pit Bull properly. They say a Boxer, Bulldog, or a Mastiff is a Pit Bull who attacked them.) I'm saying a well-trained Pit Bull will not attack.
Saying all Pit Bulls attack is just ridiculous. My dog was attacked by a Golden Retriever at a dog beach last year-it ripped my Pits' throat. Are all Golden Retrievers monsters? Of course not. It's owner was just a moron
