I'm no expert... But I'm going to go ahead and guess that foam make up applicators aren't something you should be sticking in your vagina.
I'm pretty sure anything that isn't meant to be used as an alternative to a tampon... isn't something you should stick in your vagina and leave for several hours.
Re: Alternatives to tampons?
Is there some reason you want to use makeup sponges and not sea sponges? They sell sea sponges specifically for this purpose. Also, I wouldn't think makeup sponges would be absorbent enough at all.
Re: Alternatives to tampons?
the make up sponges are surprisingly absorbent. they dont sell any sea sponges down here for that and im not buying organic cotton tampons.....i just hate tampons. i have heard of a few people using them so that they can have sex and have read that some porn stars do this. i just wanted to know if any one else did this too.
i dont leave them in very long but i never leave tampons in very long either

Using makeup sponges instead of tampons is extremely common in the Nevada brothels. They work very well and cause no discomfort during intercourse.
I don't see why it's any dumber than shoving a big wad of cotton up there.
Re: Alternatives to tampons?
I use natural sea sponges and no longer use tampons at all. I love them. Sex while on your period is very easy this way. No mess. I learned of this in the 90's when I was still stripping. At the time, it was for convenience. Now I do it for the health concerns I have with using tampons and having bleach shoved up ma kitty each month.

Heres where i get mine Jade and Pearl
I replace them about every 6 months, wash well with antibacterial soap. They are fab! Get two sizes, one for light flow and one for OH My GAWD flow!
make up sponges?, I dunno, the ones I know of have a weird texture, how do you know what else is in there? With these Jade and Pearl sea sponges, they are the real deal. natural, no additives, clean and reuasable for months and months.
Course, if you are squeamish about squatting to remove the sponge with your fingers and pulling it out to rinse..clean...and repeat, then these aren't for you!
Re: Alternatives to tampons?
I will never use a tampon again. The bleach, the rough cotton and the lack of ability to have sex? No thanks.
That having been said foam applicators are a bad idea, you have no idea what chemicals are in the foam and how the foam will react to the acidity of your vagina. I use natural sea sponge make-up applicators like this: http://www1.shoppersdrugmart.ca/ecms...sea-sponge.jpg. I buy several, boil them and allow them to dry completely. Then I insert one into my vag until I can feel it about to 'leak'.
I can have sex, not worry about strings... pretty much do whatever I want. If you are having sex make sure it doesn't get lodged in your cervix ^_^ It's relatively inexpensive (a sponge can last up to 24h) and so so so easy.
On days that I'm not going to be having sex I like to use the Diva Cup. A little cheaper after the original investment but equally as effective. http://urbangreengirl.files.wordpres...7/diva-cup.jpg
StarMaker do you boil your sponge between uses? I'd be concerned about the hand/air/water contact and then right back up there for bacteria to breed...

Re: Alternatives to tampons?
I second beckatron, you should look into the DivaCup or the Keeper for when you aren't going to have sex. I have the Keeper and LOVED it. I haven't had a period for over 6 years now because I am on my second Mirena IUD, but when I had my period the Keeper changed my life and I vowed to never use tampons again. I also have friends that swear by sponges, but one friend said she had a couple leaks when she'd sneeze or something. Maybe she wasn't changing it often enough, I'm not sure.
Re: Alternatives to tampons?
I have the DivaCup and love it!! You can buy it on amazon.com. You'll save money in the long run since you never have to buy more than one. After your period, you can boil it to sterilize it. It's made from medical grade silicone.
It takes a bit of time to figure out how to insert it, but once you figure out what works from you, it works phenomenally. You can basically forget you're on your period during the day, since it carries no risk of TSS.
Re: Alternatives to tampons?
SEA SPONGES!! dont use a makeup sponge, theyre not as absorbent. or you could get a Diva Cup. those seem to be gaining popularity

Absolutely! And I add a bit of hydrogen peroxide to the water for added peace of mind. Having back up sponges is key.
