International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers
Is today! (Dec 17th!)
Started in 2003, International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers started as a memorial to the victims of Gary Ridgeway, the Green River Killer, a serial killer who confessed to killing 48 women (prostitutes and runaways), but more likely killed more than 90.
While a lot of the language associated with sex workers is around prostitutes and women, the day commerates all sex workers, male, female, trans, trafficked or by choice, all ages, queer, straight, and in all occupations of sex work. The day is also meant to empower sex workers to stand up against discrimination. So while many of us may not feel we experience violence because of our occupation, I'm sure at one point we've faced discrimination. So as my part of celebrating the day, the next person who says something negative or presumptuous about sex workers, I'm going to camly explain why exactly we are humans too who don't deserve to be treated with discrimination or need to face violence and fear reporting it. Or at least buy a red umbrella with my dirty dirty money.:)
